I'm actually glad they cut this out of the film, because it's too cheerful and all over the place; in short, it would've created a tonal imbalance with the rest of the film, because the film itself is mostly serious. However, I do think this scene would've added a little more of a balance with Kocoum's character, in that this scene shows that he does care about Pocahontas.

The reason for Kokoum being the way he was in the final version of the film is glaringly obvious. To have such a likable, well-meaning character cheated on and shot would have been too much for everyone, and would have caused the audience to quickly lose interest in the movie's main "heroes" (at bare minimum). On the other hand though, it would have painted a far more interesting love story.

I understand why they deleted this scene, this Kocuam wouldn't fit that 'warrior' look that he is supposed to be played out to be that puts off Pocahontas in the first place (she said he is always serious). And I find that the story folds in a way of 'true love', the original Kocuam only asked for Pocahontas' hand because he is the bravest warrior and therefore MUST marry the chief's daughter in honour of saving the tribe, most tribes in history did it this way; and this would have made the love story of Pocahontas and John Smith more organic (though historically they weren't really lovers, just friends). I feel like they've adapted this scene/song instead to Mulan's "Honour To Us All"

@kristinahuchison2511 Жыл бұрын
Isn’t that the point though? She feels like she’s being forced to choose between a man she fell in love with and her tribe excited for her marriage to a respected warrior. I think this song is maybe a bit too cheery for how I always saw Kocuom, but it does show how Pocahontas isn’t that kind of woman and feels pressured from her people to just be happy and forget about John Smith

Everyone seems 50/50 about Disney creating and deciding to cut this scene out of the final film. I thought it was always obvious Kocoum loved Pocahontas. Even in the scene where Kocoum comes into the cornfield to look after Pocahontas & Nikoma and Pocahontas isn't there. How he says both in his tone & body language "Pocahontas can't keep running off it's dangerous out there, tell her that...she listens to you." How he walks away from Nikoma is if he's lost a battle and that's probably how he felt that he can conquer any enemy on the battlefield but, he is constantly losing the battle for Pocahontas heart because she's always disappearing when he comes on the scene. Even when Nikoma alerts Kocoum of Pocahontas' whereabouts he sounds genuinely concerned and worried for her safety. This scene is just TOO Disney. I think the final cut is perfect and reminds us love just like people come in many different languages and the way Kocoum translated his love for Pocahontas came off foreign to her and apparently many of us.

I know! It always confuses me whenever I see someone say “Pocahontas should’ve married Kocuom instead” because I know deep down Kocuom did love and care about her a lot, but the point is he never really considered how she felt. While John imo was always there whenever Pocahontas felt alone and in another deleted scene even encouraged her he liked her so much better as a native than trying to be an English lady. And Kocuom imo expected her to be happy to marry him, even in this song doesn’t actually try to ask her, just assumes this is what she wants too.

Kocoum is depicted very differently here then in the movie. This scene would've been nice if toned down a bit and Kocoum remains stiff, bc it doesn't seem part of his personality to be so jovial. I'd still like it if he smiled or sang to Pocahontas but in a way that doesn't kick his personality away. A person can be serious, but they can't be like that all the time and he could show that he has a patient, gentle, and more caring side to him. That scene where the kids were surround and playing with him while he just stood there taking it shows this. Shows that he has self control and is a patient person, the kids aren't scared of him despite his appearance and you could say the kids are like 'he's our protector he wouldn't hurt us' kinda thing but if the guy was the type to scold or yell at kids even if he was their protector no kid would approach him. So It would feel more personal bc he rarely shows this side of him but Pocahontas is going to be his wife and he's going to spend his days with her why not make it easier for the both of them? Like after the happy loud music is over and they get in the hut, the music stops and starts again in a small yet gruff voice as he gives himself to Pocahontas. He's a warrior afterall, no good warrior would wear their hearts on their sleeves unless the opponent is the guy kissing your wife. The kiss scene would be so much more heartbreaking.

In my honest opinion, out of all the deleted scenes, this is the one they should've kept in the final version but also added another scene where Kocoum and Pocahontas had a private conversation by the river or spent some time together, you know where Kocoum and Pocahontas had their own scene. Because I feel like Kocoum didn't get enough screen time in the movie and that he deserved a bigger role in the film. Because in the scenes he did appear in, he's only on screen for a few seconds at a time and only got like maybe 10 - 12 lines or so in the whole movie! But of course if they had kept this scene in, his death scene would've been even sadder! So the film should've had an additional 6 or 7 minutes with this scene and the additional scene mentioned above and the film should've been more like 87 or 88 minutes instead of 81 minutes or so that it already is.
@kristinahuchison2511 Жыл бұрын
Same. Honestly I felt his lack of appearance actually weakened the love story between Pocahontas and John. @IzayoiArwena11 жыл бұрын
It was very happy and would make the movie more bright. Sad that they didn't use it and killed Cocoum, in my opinion he should be with Nakoma, because its visible that she has a lot of interest in him.
@kristinahuchison2511 Жыл бұрын
Same. I know some were a bit upset Pocahontas chose John instead, mainly because they simply found Kocuom a lot more attractive. Personally I never really cared for his design, and always thought he should’ve ended up with Nakoma instead of being killed off. I also feel this more cheery side of Kocuom doesn’t fit his more serious and stoic warrior personality, as it’s meant to contrast how John is more of a goofball who loves Pocahontas as she is and deeply cares about her feelings.
@AtarahDerek14 жыл бұрын
@skinnerburgers He had a few small lines. One suggesting an attack, one counting people, one shouting "Mamantak!", and a couple asking where Pocahontas was. Oh, and he did that war scream. Nah, I think John was always the better choice. While John understood her capabilities as a woman who didn’t need a man protecting her, but he wanted to simply because he loves her so much and doesn’t want anything to happen to her.
