I carry a pocket knife all the time, for most of my day to day chores it's all I need around the house or out and about running errands. In the outdoors, whether that's working in the yard/garden, camping, fishing or hunting, I rarely use it but it's there if I need something for smaller tasks where a 4 to 6 inch fixed blade is just a bit unwieldy.

The pocket knife actually antedates the 1920 era, going back to the Civil War. The knapsack kit of the Civil War infantryman almost always included a jackknife for the common cutting chores - - food prep, eating, cutting plug tobacco for chewing, whittling, clothing/shoe repair, etc. Early in the war the Southern infantrymen all carried bowie knives and large belt knives, but quickly discovered that the weight of these led to quicker exhaustion and weren't used in battle (they had bayonets for that). By the time the war ended, the single-bladed jackknife of medium size was found almost universally in knapsacks, both Union and Confederate.

I spent 2.5 months living outside, on the road, with just a sharpened broken piece of hacksaw blade. When you have nothing, even a broken piece of glass becomes your primary tool.

So, long story kinda short, I encountered some hardships and lost my home and then job. Booked a flight to Asia to recoup, figured it would be more tolerable than spending winter living rough in France. I stayed for 2 months in countries that forbid knives, and where I've been previously controlled and searched multiple times. During those two months, I only carried a piece of hacksaw blade shaped into a kiridashi, made on the spot. I used it for personal defense (never had to slash or stab anything/anyone, but it got close), general utility and repairs, and cooking. I mostly ate precooked meat, and raw veggies. I'm one of those extreme ultralighters so focus was on being far away from people, but relatively close to civilisation. Never went 3 days without buying food to give you an idea. Slept in jungles, bushes, beaches, a truck beds, stadiums, parks, alongside rural roads, kids playgrounds... After that I moved to Malaysia, bought a 18" Tramontina machete, found a rusty 14" parang, and walked to surrounding countries. Total was a bit more than 6 months living rough. The duo 18" machete and tiny utility blade was was a killer combo. No in between 🫡 If you look up "ARAW Kiridashi" you might find what I actually carried ever since.

It’s true. I’m an Instructor and I carry mostly 2.5-3” blades, and a small folding saw. I split wood with a wedge that I carve out there. I go ultra light.. Apache Scout-style.. I own an axe but don’t like to carry any extra weight.
@ahabstar
@ahabstar Ай бұрын
Speaking on outdoors tasks, a pocket knife has been a finesse tool. The scout with blade, can opener, bottle opener and awl is evident for it’s functions. The trapper with the Spey blade is for gutting and skinning. The canoe and cattleman are good for whittling detail work. Then you eventually get into the SAK and various models and tool sets. Huntsman, Camper and Farmer models been better choices for outdoors. But ultimately the difference between a knife and a true tool is the sharpness and overall experience with it.

I always have several pocket knives: usually a 2 blade, a SAK clone, a Leatherman type multitool, and a locking folder. In the bush, I often have an hatchet/tomahawk on my belt but my fixed blade is usually in/on my pack and usually only gets used for cleaning fish. IMHO Pocket knives are highly underrated by people that want to spend money on fancy 'named' fixed blades. Because they aren't flashy. Because they can't be seen and therefore don't enhance their 'appearance' as manly men. Great vid! Thanks!

What I love about swiss army knives for a pocket knife is how freaking light they are. Most people don't realize it because they tend to just think of all the tools on a large swiss army knife, but a bantam with the cambo tool, tweezers and tooth pick is 1.1oz and their 2 layer knives are like 1.6oz. For comparison a small 2 blade trapper is often 3.5-4 oz. It's not much in the long run but for somthing that you just keep for whittling and utility it will litterally disappear in your pocket.

Actually, the simple folding knife goes back to the roman times. A simple friction folder and stayed that way up through the 1600's and 1700's. In the 1700's, the back spring started to make its appearance and became the pocket knife as we know it in the 1800's. You can still buy the simple European friction folders like the smaller Opinels and MAM's from Portugal, and some from Eastern Europe. From the late 1500's on, the simple folding knife becomes very popular for daily use. In Spain it was the predecessor of the navaja, which became a locking blade in the late 1700's and early 1800's.

What ive done for a long time. Is carry my basic pack. Than inside that, a small bag with all the the 5 c's. The bag is small about 6" diameter round. 11 inches long. This also serves as my main fire kit I should point out... but it also has 99 cent emergency space blanket. 99 cent pancho. Spare small titanium cook pot with solid fueled stove. A 1/4 lb roll of #36 tarred bank line. Spare medium thickness wool socks. 1 ciffee. 1 package ramen. And I had a small swiss army knife I kept in there. But now I just carry a cheap 2" blade. Fixed blade. Prob 5 inches overall. It's like a half handle. I refer to it as a scouting or day hike bag. Also usually keep a hank or two of paracord in there as well. And lastly 1 9$ aluminum body keyhole saw. One end pocket has the roll of babblank line as mentioned. The opposite pocket holds a belt / strap so the bag can be worn as a fanny pack. Or shoulder bag. Or just attached to any molle system. So if I ever lost everything. I could at least make it 1 night in most conditions/elements with just that bag. The bag probably weighs 7 or 8 lbs. And my total weight is usually 25 to 30lbs. So I think....Well worth the redundancy. But yea. Good spot for a small fixed blade knife.

Personally I carry a pocket knife with the basic 3 blade design, one long blade for fileting fish etc, a standard blade for basic utility stuff, and the third is the trusty can/bottle opener. I've carried this for probably 40 years. My other edc is a home depot bought box cutter blade with a fold up regular half serrated blade on it. That gets used more than anything. I use the box cutter for everything. They go on my left side with a pair of toenail clippers and a small Gerber folder. I use that for grooming mostly. I used to carry a pair of tweezers, but they finally got lost somewhere so I need to replace that.

I feel it can be anything from a weapon to a mini axe, but could also gain entry past doors that use screws to hold doors or windows. It can act as a pry bar...and it is really no weight to carry.I don't know. I carry it around anyways. Strong steel with a sharp edge. Seems useful to me. What do you think?

👍👍👍 I do not feel dressed unless there is a pocket knife on my person .. of a collection of SAK's, a little Leatherman Micro, two Opinels and an 'Okapi' Folder. My first SAK I got when going into the Military in 1968 and it's still in use. The Okapi Folder, back from the 70's and my time in the Underground Gold Mining Industry .. 'everybody' carried one. Useful for, inter alia, cutting Plastic / Rubber, Water and Compressed Hoses to effect repairs to leaks and a host of other stuff. Notorious, also, for being the blade of convenience for more stabbings in South Africa than any other blade I know of. The Opinels. One the 'Kiddie' version with the blunt-end blade, sits in my outdoor kitchen cutlery pouch and the other, in a holder on my belt or pocket .. depending where I am. So light as not even be noticed in a pocket, or on a belt, unobtrusive enough so as to not draw much undue attention to it. Anyway, the Swiss are not as 'knife 😱' as elsewhere 😏. Useful for cutting brambles snaking across the forest pathways when walking the pooch. The SAK .. the Awl useful for Toggle making and such. The small ultra-sharp secondary blade, used only to slice 'Biltong' (dehydrated meat .. beef or game), 'Jerky' in Merican 😏. I do not include a Kershaw 'Outlaw' Folder as I consider it more of a belt-pouched item than in a pocket. Nice share .. thanks. Take care ..

The first time I went camping in the wild was with just a pocket knife (it was by accident, I lost the knife and found it later), it was great, I recommend everyone to try using just a pocket knife. Just like using a tarp and not a tent. You feel more confident, you see that you don't need a lot of materials. Apart from getting cold, otherwise I think it's easy, especially since it was only for one or two days. It's good to know how resilient and strong we are and that we don't need a lot of equipment. Before, anyone considered weak was much stronger than us, so how could we be weak today with knowledge, food, vitamin pills and access to the internet? We have to create our own strength, one step at a time. I want to raise my children in the woods, so they can be strong. After all, when the mark of the beast arrives, it won't be possible to do business legally without accepting the devil. We have to be ready to live in the backwoods of the backwoods with limited resources. Today, apocalypse chapter 13 is possible, before it wasn't possible. Whoever has ears listen.

In the 40s, another name for smaller jack knives was, a pen knife. I was given to understand that the smallest blade was designed for sharpening quill pens. Quill pens were long gone by the time I reached grade school. Anyway, as school kids, we weren’t trusted with ink pens. (Probably a very good decision. Both kids and furniture would have been all messy). We used the small blade for whittling. If a blade had a good point, I used it to get slivers out. Now, I have little use for a folding knife. They have two, bad habits. They will fold in on fingers, or just simply break. Full tang knives have much better manners. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Once you get into the habit of carrying a pocket knife, it's amazing how many opportunities you will find to use it for daily utility activities. That said, I don't think I'd use any kind of folding knife for processing game nor especially for food prep. Too hard to keep the folding mechanism clean, especially in the field. I'd be worried about cross contamination.

I have carried a pocket knife since I was in 5th grade. How long ago? Well I carried it every day in 5th grade. My father used a Barlow for just about everything. Cut up food, skin small game, clean fish or the battery terminals. First set your fixed blade aside and see how much you can do with a pocket knife. Batoning large chunks of hard wood should not be on the list. Steel sheet metal is exceptable.

My pocket knife is a foldable box cutter. It’s always sharp as a razor until it’s not. Then I just flip the blade around. Mine carries like 10 extra blades. It never needs sharpening. It can fillet fish or skin an animal with ease. Better than a traditional pocket knife ? Yes. Having lived in Southeast Asia they don’t need an axe they have a machete of sorts that does it all.
