But overall the rest of the mundane substories are just for shits and giggles, this explains why there's a full 180° difference with characters personality in the main story vs substories

19:48. This was it. This is the moment I started to cry like a little bitch. 35 goddamn years have these two known each other, and really, he's one of the only people Kiryu could call a true friend. From being called a virgin by kids, to selling tofu in Hiroshima to support his family, to returning to Pocket Circuit, Kiryu was there pretty much every step of the way. And still holding onto a picture from *1988* is fucking telling that these two truely had an inseparable bond. Only Like a Dragon could make me burst into tears over a goddamn character that you could very well miss entirely.

He was the one friend he could make out of all the drama that was the yakuza stuff, he was completely uninvolved, maybe for Kiryu that friendship was untainted by all the drama and death, it was pure friendship from two guys that had a love for pocket racing.

One thing I love about the Pocket Circuit legacy is that it allowed Kiryu one place to truly be innocent. His time at Pocket Circuit and his relationship with the Fighter are one of the only times Kiryu got to enjoy something totally disconnected from the rest of his life and worries.

If you really think about it kiryu change fighter life for the better. In zero kiryu and fighter became friends. In Kiwami 1 kiryu help fighter to find a successor so that he can get married. In 6 kiryu restore fighter spirit and help fix his relationship with his son which than lead to dragon kart in 7. Gaiden show others following fighter footsteps. Just go to show how much of an impact kiryu change someone life for the better.
