Lots of great advice here. The only thing I would add is that some pockets (such as exterior jacket pockets) can be easily divided. A piece of cardboard or a CD will do the trick. I don't mention this so that you can cram lots more stuff in, but sometimes I need to be carry a couple of small items in the same pocket. It is nice to be able to just reach into the correct side of the pocket to get one without disturbing the other. Of course this could add an additional slot to your sheets of paper: inner side of right jacket pocket & outer side of right jacket pocket. Thanks again for another great video.

I was one of those who had too much on me in many years. My solution was: After doing street shows for a while with a tshirt and west-coat only, I throwed my jacket away, and now I only use west-coat. It really made me to reinvent and cut down my material a lot with less pocketspace.

I do a lot of coins, I highly recommend buisiness card wallets or even better the Kainoa Harbottle pocket management system. It is like having strong leather or cloth folder system in your pocket for multiple small items. Great or keeping track of multiple items that at the same size but need to be grabbed from the pocket blindly. You can even build. "sets" and put them in these little cloth folders and just grab them on the way out, separating different coin sets for example.

Professional advice from a true worker. This video was high caliber, Craig! Amazing job. Some people are adding some thoughts so I will as well. Pocket dividers help a lot. Just a piece of cardboard does the trick.

I remember my first paid gig I used maybe 20% of the stuff I was carrying. It did however give me confidence afterwards that I could do quite well with just a pack of cards.

Garrett Thomas sold me a pocket management system that I believe was originally designed by Kaunda Harbottle. It’s essentially an index for close up tricks. It turns one pocket into 8 and everything stays where you need it. And it takes remarkably little space. I can still store my cards or my Omni deck in the same pocket. It’s fantastic. I cannot recommend it enough.

Great advice and it's just as important when introducing new material to your standard set as this can have an impact on your pocket management too
@BarryAllenMagic3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely dynamite advice Craig for an element that is so important; yet often overlooked. A contribution that I would add is that you need to keep one pocket COMPLETELY FREE for your house/car keys, mobile phone, contract, a few business cards and money/wallet (unless you are using this for an effect). In other words, a pocket that you will not use at ANY time during your routine (for me, it's my right hand trouser pocket). I do not take a case to gigs; but I would not ever consider leaving any personal effects/property out of sight. My entire set these days consists of the following: Jacket (inside left pocket) - 4 Jumbo Cards. Jacket (inside right pocket) - CTW and Sharpie in Sherpa - don't look cheap by using a felt tip pen - so forget buying the next miracle, instead invest £25 in a classy looking pen cover! Jacket (outside left pocket) - 2 normal NEW (but broken in) packs of Waddingtons cards (yeah OK I'm an old fart - but I need 4 index cards as being left-handed, I spread from right to left for 'think of a card') - one is just a spare in case the working pack gets wet, sticky, etc. DON'T take them from a tatty, dog-eared card case that looks like it's been found in the gutter then sat on! I have seen this happen oh so very often; it's completely unprofessional. Jacket (outside right pocket) - Sponge Balls - always washed or replaced frequently; and rolled in my hands which have been sprayed in advance, with a decent aftershave. Trousers (left pocket) - I'll Start Again paddle and chalk. Just a tip - I carry the packs of cards in my outer jacket pocket because when you are working, you WILL get very hot.Having cards in pockets closer to your increased body temperature (trousers or inside jacket pockets) will, in all likelihood, make them warp. With just these few effects, I don't look or feel 'bulked up' and it's all that I need at a table to have more than enough material (along with the palm reading afterwards, if requested). Most of the routines that I perform are Joe Riding's; my mentor who taught me 'less is more'. Remember you are at a gig to entertain people; you aren't in the Blackpool Winter Gardens giving them a dealer dem. So the less props you have, you will learn to put more effort into your presentation. Just my thoughts on pockets and what to carry - others may disagree. Superb video though mate - many thanks for sharing your thoughts, advice and experience.

Please talk about your favorite way of working with invisible thread it may be regular or elastic. What is the best system for tying your own loops?

Some other suggestions that would be "built-in"; along with the ring change-something like the Pembrose Pendant by Jeff Prace (or any other necklace/pendant type effect)/ loops worn on your wrist/any number of items carried in your wallet and of course any number of phone items...(depending if you're a Greg Rostami or Marc Kiersten fan) Lots & Lot's of options 👌🤘🏻

I keep a few effects in my hat - (great fun swopping them around) - I have watched this video six times now and you have not mentioned magicians that don a hat (fez in my case) Do you Craig have a problem with a magicians that wear hats? (there are quite a few of us)
@StuartReid9993 жыл бұрын
I'd second your point that if you've rehearsed properly (in performance clothes) you will have figured out where all your props need to come from, and where they will go back to. Rehearsal is definitely not the same as practice.
