This is just one layer of gear, which is part of my total system. Of course things like proper clothing, first aid kit, cutting tool, water bottle, shelter, etc, etc. Those items should be considered a given, any time a person ventures into the wilderness. Things like "The 10 Essentials" or "The 10 C's of Survivability" should form the base of any wilderness equipment system.

This one is going in my favorites. Not just because of your kit (which by the way is awesome) but because of the points you bring up about the sewing kit, food, and the contractor bag. Having basic knowledge of edible plants trumps a bouillon cube any day also. but this is by far the best PSK video I've seen so far. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Excellent kit philosophy! Your emphasis on real situations is refreshing... no romantic fish hooks and snare wire. I would rethink the sewing needle though. Needle and strong thread can effect emergency repairs that are permanent and worry free. You are right that safety pins and tape will do but after you sew that pack strap back on you won't have to think about it again. I know... it's a step beyond survival but worth it. Great job on this vid!

You are correct Sir. Most folks think if something goes wrong, they'll whip out a knife and build a log cabin LOL, the truth is, if you are really in a fight for your life, the one thing a person should be concened with, is getting the hell out of that situation!

Thank you my friend! While I hope I never have to use this gear, it certainly gives a little piece of mind for a "Just in Case" scenario. Walking out under my own power would always be my first choice, but everyone should have to means to stay warm and combat thirst if the need to wait for a rescue becomes a reality.

Wow, the closing comments on your video echo my sentiments exactly. I'm not sure if you saw my videos on using my kit, but I think I demonstrated it's possible to provide shelter, fire, water, and navigation/signalling with a few less items in those videos. I agree, though, that we do share the same philosophy/approach to survival. I'm glad people like us have a chance to share ideas in this way.

Hey Steve mate, One of the best kits I have seen for a long time for sure, I definitely feel we are on a simliar wavelength with regards to mentality and the concept behind what we would believe to be the true requirements of a survival situation. Core temperature control, hydration, being found or navigating out well and truly beyond finding, catching or fishing and preparing a gourmet meal for example! I am going to enjoy watching your future vids in the series and future correspondence.

Very nicely presented and well-explained. Your survival kit strikes me as reflecting the right priorities while being sufficiently portable. If it's not portable, you'll hate carrying it and eventually, you'll be leaving it behind. I disagree with you on the issue of needle and thread, but not for gear repair. I carry a large needle that's pre-threaded in case I need to sew up a gash in myself or (more plausibly) in another person. Nice work. Thanks. -Martin

You are correct my friend, it is definitely bigger than the standard Altoids tin. They can be purchased through several online companies. Shop around for the best price. A good deal is to go in with a few buddies, and buy them in bulk. That way you can split the cost over several folks, and you will also save on shipping. Good luck.

I agree. One point that I have to constantly stress is, this kit is only a back up to what I carry in my day pack. It's another tool in the tool box so to speak. Just something that I can tuck into a cargo pocket in case of a pinch. I never venture into the wilds without the basic needs to effect my survival and stay safe.

Great kit Steve!! Very well thought out and innovative with lots of capabilities. I think it's a very reasonably sized kit to carry around. I would add a sterile gauze pad if possible and polysporin. Experience has shown me that injury to ones self is most probable. My computer has been down since Dec 7, so I've had to check my account weekly at the library. I apologize for any late responses.

Just a few suggestions. I would replace the chap stick with something like Burt's bees that can be used as fire accelerant as well. Check our the survival Metrics mini folding razor blade, I think that would be a good addition to your kit. I am personally a fan of having braided fishing line for some smaller chores because of the ridiculous strength and length you can cary in a small kit. I would also recommend just having a needle or something so that you could repair something if you had to, takes up no space at all and you can improvise the thread easy enough from another cord. I also cary a medium sized treble hook for fishing. that way, depending on where I am, I can use it as a hook, or bend the tines and use it as a gig for hunting. again takes up very minimal space. Great kit so far, hope my suggestions inspire new ideas for improvements

Excellent packing! I have that same vitorinox cheapy to supplement my medical kit for the same two reasons you described; scissors and tweezers. Thank you for the kind words my friend! I'm really glad that you enjoyed the video, and my philosophy on what I feel should be in a PSK. There are a ton of good kits out there, but a few seem to be lacking in the basic areas. Fire, Hydration, Shelter, and last but not least, Signaling. In a perfect world I'd prefer to have three of each when it comes to those four topics, but in the end, I had to make some tough choices based on size. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment.

Thank you! I agree on the issue of food. I can certainly understand the need for it, and the fact that most of us will get very hungry after missing a meal or two, but that's why it's called "Survival"..lol I get alot of PM's about snare wire and fishing gear. The last portion of your comment falls right in line with most of them. I agree that those items would fit, but I have no plans to start fishing or trapping if my life is in danger. My only concern would be to "Get out of that situation".
@TheECOChannel
@TheECOChannel 12 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Food would be my last concern in the first 72 hours of a survival emergency. I'm not saying it would be pleasant to go without eating for a couple of days, but staying warm, drinking fluids, and getting the heck out of the situation are way more important in my opinion.

Thank you very much for that awesome comment!!! I agree with you 100%. I put alot of time into picking items of gear that I thought would help me in a real survival situation, and the kit is built to aid me in this region. I live in a very populated area, so this is really a "Just in Case" kit. Some folks think the cards are a waste of space, but they are so thin, they take up about the same amount of space as blank rite in the rain paper, and in a pinch, I can always write on the back of them.

Thank you for the kind words! You are very observant my friend! I give you major kudos for spotting the Suunto. It's one part of my overall personal survival system. Everything from the watch on my wrist, clothes on my back, to the contents of each pocket, plays an important role, giving me an edge just in case a "What if" situation occurs. Thank you for watching my video and taking the time to comment. No need to doubt my friend. I have a few different knives in my gear storage box to pick from. Most of the time when I head out to the woods, I carry #2 Mora with a 4 inch blade that's high carbon steel. You can take a look at it in my "Day Hike Carry Gear (Warm Weather)" video. @Rivieratime Thank you very much for taking the time to watch and comment. I've seen the tape that you spoke of, and even thought of adding it to my kit, but in the end, I went with the SOLAS stuff. Thank you. Yes, I do really think those safety pins are useful. On the flip side of your comment, I've never been out hiking and thought to myself, "Man, I really wish I brought a complete sewing kit with me". What I'm trying to say is, it's a personal choice. Not good or bad, just a different view. I hear ya bro, and I appericate your opinion. A safety pin has tons of applications. Remove a splinter, replace a missing button, repair a broken strap, etc, etc, etc. To each his own I guess.

@cyclist01222 Thank you very much for the kind words. I put alot of time, money, and thought into this kit. I agree with you 100%, that to sew a pack strap would hold way better than the tape or the pins. I've looked around, and good sail cloth needles are cheap, but to pay for shipping on a product that goes for $1.99 is a real drag. If I can find a supplier that's local, I might just have to throw a couple in there. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and leave such positive feedback!!!

So true. I always have snacks in my day pack, so there's really no need to try and squeeze anything else into a pocket sized kit. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Anything less than a broken leg, and I'm walking out under my own power. As far as a medical emergency, I live in a area where rescue is never farther away than a nice loud whistle blast, or a quick call to 911 via cell phone or VHF radio. While working in the Middle East I did carry a well stocked IFAK, but most of my adventures these days are local-NJ, so my needs have changed over the years with knowledge gained by hard earned experience from the field.

The first kit I've seen that has water purification tablets and bags. I was beginning to think I was the only one that was concerned with drinking water.

Thank you for commenting!!! I'm always surprised when I see a PSK that doesn't include a way to collect snd disinfect water. Depending on the environment, it may be the most important of all priorities.

Robert Mercado ....Thanks for the comment Robert! The mini compass was available through taggear, but I think they stopped carrying it. Sorry brother. :-( A good replacement is the M9 wrist compass made by Suunto. I will be giving one away in my upcoming PSK contest. Anyone who sub's will have a chance to win one when we reach the 1,000 mark.

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. That's a great idea, and maybe one of these days, I'll have to work on that. Truth be told, it's been months since I've had the time to make a video, or even reply to comments. So it won't be any time soon. Thanks again for the feedback and the kind words my friend.

Thank you very much for the kind words! I have recieved several requests for an update. I just need to get some free time to shoot the video. Work has been crazy since Hurricane Sandy hit this area. Stay tuned, and I'll be sure to let you know when it's done. Cheers :-)

Thanks for the share bud. I know Im a little late but thank you. I hope you found out by now you can go 3 weeks without food not 3 days. 3 days is water & "3 minutes without oxygen" even tho with proper training some deep sea divers hold their breath for 11 minutes. But its the "rule of 3" anyways. Thanks again real nice kit.

Thank you for the comment John! I'm very much aware when it comes to the "Rule of 3's". I live in a highly populated area, and the chances of being rescued within 3 days, or less is almost a given. My point was that food, or the need to try and catch game in that time frame, would not be a high priority for me. While I certainly understand going without a normal meal schedule for even one day can be uncomfortable, it wouldn't be too big of a deal. But yes, thank you for pointing that out. It might be a help to some of the newer folks who are just watching this for the first time. :-)

@simplysurvival01 Thank you Kyle! After seeing your survival kit video, I was inspired to make my own video. I've been working on this PSK for quite awhile, and just like you, I've changed the contents several times. I'm glad you like it, and stay tuned, I'm planning on this being a 3 part series, with my medium and large size kits still to come. Thanks again for watching buddy :-)

That's a great idea my friend. I have an up coming video on what I carry in my day pack as emergency rations. I think you're gonna like what you see. I'll let you now when it gets uploaded. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment.

This is a well thought out kit, thanks for the video. I just subbed. I think a lot of people confuse pocket survival kits with bug out bags/get home bags.

Thank you for the kind words my friend! Thank you also for the sub and the support!!! I agree, I often have to remind folks that my PSK is just one layer, of an entire system that is constantly changing based on several factors, anytime I head to the outdoors.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and subscribe! I know alot of folks like to add fishing gear to their survival kits, but to be totally honest, if a true survival situation ever really happens, fishing would be the last thing on my mind. Getting out of there by walking out, or rescue would be my main concern.

Great kit! I appreciate what you say about food and always laugh when people act like they're going to starve after 8 hrs without a hot meal, burning the other hand, you could fit a fishing kit and some snare wire in that kit without even noticing. It just seems silly to not include it.

Thank you for the compliment! I'm sorry to say that I don't sell any of my survival kits. The cost of the contents makes them a bit on the pricey side, but they are quite fun to build.

Lots of good idea's in there. ok now I know what a mp1 is :) I've actually considered putting the emergency blanket (Mylar) as part of mine. You've put alot of thought into this kit. I would consider this the gold standard kit :)
