Randy Miesner (Eagles) was originally with Poco as was Timothy Schmit (Eagles song -I can't tell you why) and Jim Messina (Kenny Loggins partner/duo). Randy's "Take it to the Limit" is by far my fav. Eagles song, the LIVE 77 Version is maybe one of the best live songs I have ever seen. Poco was a great band.

Poco is more often considered Yacht Rock. It's a wide cross section of smooth music from country to soul. It includes everything from The Doobie Brothers to The Commodores. Check out Paul Davis, Ambrosia, Dr Hook, Dan Fogleburg, Bob Seger and oh so many more Yacht music artists. Very under rated music.

These guys were one of my favorite bands. I still have tons of their music on vinyl. If you'd like to discover more, try Good Feeling To Know or Too Many NIghts To Long or Drivin Wheel. All 3 are great & show different sides of the band. You are hearing a pedal steel guitar, Rusty Young was one of the best on the instrument. By the way...just as a point of reference, Poco was around a few years before The Eagles, so the influence may have gone both ways.

The instrument is an electric steel guitar and Rusty Young (playing it here) is renound to be among the very best. Also, you hear Phil Kenzie on alto sax. You know Phil's sax from many songs he's played on as a studio musician, including: Al Stewart "Year of the Cat", the Eagles' "The Long Run", and Alan Parson's "One More River"

Poco was formed in late 60s years before the eagles. Poco does not get the credit they deserve. But for us true music lovers we do know how good they were. Back in the day it was about how much radio play you got. But in the late 60s and early 70s it was basically just A M radio.we spent most of our youth in our cars and most cars only had A M radio's. F M radio didn't take off until around 73 or 74ish. The A M stations mostly played the more pop rock. But those were the best years to grow up in. Harri you would have loved that Era.

It's not surprising that you would detect a similarity to the Eagles sound. Their formation actually pre-dates the Eagles and they, along with perhaps the Flying Burrito Brothers and the late-60's version of the Byrds, were the pioneers of the Southern California country-rock genre. They formed in the wake of the breakup of Buffalo Springfield. One of their original members, bassist Randy Meisner, went on to become a founding member of the Eagles. Another Poco bassist, Timothy B. Schmit, also later joined the Eagles and is still with them to this day. So there is shared history between the two bands, and they both emerged from the same Southern California country rock scene around the same time.

Poco also did a cover song of JJ Cale s release in 1971 of a beautiful song called Magnolia. Poco s version was released in 1973 on the Crazy Eyes album. Talk about incredible vocals and steel guitar……. this song s just an amazing production.Paul Cotton sings like velvet and the late Rusty Young plays that steel guitar like a songbird.Definitely worth a listen.

Magnolia is a fantastic tune! Poco wrote some great songs and didn't do a lot of covers, but when they did cover another artist, they did a great job. Loved their cover of Gram Parsons' 'Brass Buttons'.

I love me some Eagles too, but I don't think the Eagles ever had a sax in their songs. Poco was unique; hard to place them in just one category. "Crazy Love" is another feel-good song by Poco. 🙂

The Eagles had an alto sax on the song "The Sad Cafe" from their "The Long Run" album. It was played by David Sanborn. Also, the Eagles in the last decade or maybe a bit longer, have had a full horn section in their concerts, and have reworked several songs to include horns, including sax. The horn section is made up of Al Garth (Sax, Violin, Percussion), Christian Mostert (Alto and Tenor Sax), Greg Smith (Baritone Sax).

When the Eagles were first starting they talked Randy Miesner into leaving poco and joining them. Then when randy was having issues and left The eagles . they talked timothy B shmit into joining them he replaced randy in poco then they took him from poco.. i think if I were in poco I would be mad at the eagles for taking the guys.

Poco is an American country rock band originally formed in 1968 after the demise of Buffalo Springfield. Guitarists Richie Furay and Jim Messina, former members of Buffalo Springfield, were joined by multi-instrumentalist Rusty Young, bassist Randy Meisner, and drummer George Grantham. Meisner quit the band whilst they were recording their first album, Pickin' Up the Pieces, though his bass and backing vocal parts were kept in the final mix. He was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit in 1969, and Messina left in 1970 to be replaced by Paul Cotton. The line-up would change numerous times over the next several decades, with Rusty Young being the only constant member. A reunion of the founding members occurred in the late 1980s-early 1990s, and the band has continued in some form through the present day, though they retired from active touring in 2013, with Young citing health concerns as the primary cause of his retirement. He died from a heart attack in April 2021.

Glad you liked this song, reminds me of a girl when I was young, if you watch the video, you'll see that Randy Meisner is playing bass guitar, he's standing behind Paul Cotton, he wrote and did lead vocals on the Eagles' hit song, "Take it to the limit" , that might be why you think it sounds like the Eagles. You would love Gram Parsons he was a genius He was a member of the flying burrito Brothers and then he went solo and unfortunately died way too young. Harri, this was a pretty ubiquitous album when it came out in the late 1970s. Everyone wanted more country-rock, as the Eagles had slowed down to the point of breaking up. Disco was being played a lot and those of us who never had any use for disco wanted more rock and roll and Poco helped fill the gap. I've always loved the minimalist sketch on the front of the album. It said a great deal with very few lines. 👌😉🎸😎😎
