I personally believe that what happens after death is so incomprehensible that no human being has even come up with a theory that's even close to what even actually happens. Therefore, I believe that everybody is actually clueless as to what actually happens after death and we're all going to be completely surprised as to what we actually experience.

Do you realize how HUGE and mysterious the universe is? Why should I think I know everything about it and exactly how it works? I just simply believe the universe is too mysterious for humans to fully understand. We only have so much brain power.

Scientifically I tell myself that there is nothing after death, but I can't seem to accept it. I think that whatever happens isn't something that humans are capable of imagining.

I’m a year late whoops but if this is all there is then the hundredth of a millisecond that we’ve been on the day of earth is inconsequential and the idea of nothing mattering is the idea of lack of eternity so something that seems detrimental such as murdering someone actually doesn’t matter at all because our frail human lives are all for nothing

this type of stuff always makes me think about ghosts and why do people always think ghosts are like people or animals that are dead? Idk why people never ponder about ghosts or "spiritual beings" as another being of life that was put upon this earth like people and animals and it is its own thing but its like germs and we just cant see it but its there. think about it :P

Laura Garção I don't think it's weird because everyone has different paranormal or cosmic experiences or whatever you call them. So when Jenna made the statements about how basically the majority of religions are just waiting for our God/Gods to come back, all I could think of is a dog waiting for their humans to come home. Like different breeds of dogs have more anxiety when their owners leave while others are totally chill about it. I feel like the different religions are just different "breeds" which is why some are so absolutely focused on the God/Gods coming back, meanwhile there's others, myself included that are just like ehhhh whatever, if they come back, that's cool, if not, Imma just keep eating, pooping, and playing with my toys.
@carlyxnichole

To continue on this thought, a dog knows when they did something they weren't supposed to, which is why we have these "rules" about how to live, because we don't want our person to come home and see that we tore up the sofa because then they'll be very angry.

I know this video is a bit old but I just wanna say something. my beloved mama passed away in december 2016 and she never believed in life after death, she always was like „no, after that theres nothing, everythings just black“ anyways, about two weeks before her passing she told me that something weird happened, she fell half asleep on the couch and suddenly felt a hand stroke over her head. she woke up immediatly and thought „oh that surely was a fly or something“ but then she said to me „no, no I am absolutely sure it was a loving hand that stroke over my head“ (I truly think it was her dad) now, if you believe it or not, she gives me huge signs that she is there, like there is no doubt that she is by my side. the point is- even if she did not believe in life after death she had a „spiritual“ experience and she clearly does everything to let me know that she is still there. energy does not die, I think we will just kinda „take a step to the side“ not far away, not up in heaven, not down to hell we just stay here but run on another frequency, not as a person but as the soul and the energy that we are. ♥️
@jennashaw6710
@jennashaw6710 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. My dad died when i was younger and there were just so many signs that he was present. Little things would happen that were clearly him showing his presence, and I could just feel it. I also believe in mediums, and I think they are communicating with that energy from another space.

AGuyCalledDis it’s not critical thinking? There’s no conclusion to be made from logical thinking - there is no conclusion. This is the same thing as someone saying that critical thinking would prove that any god doesn’t exist, which is also bullshit. You can’t prove anything or specifically** disprove anything, so we’re here in a space of not having the truth. You’re acting like you must be the smartest human on earth for “critical thinking” your way into not believing in anything. That = being a self-important asshole

I know exactly what you mean about signs!! The day my mother died I went outside to cry and a ladybug landed on me and chilled for an hour+. Since then I have encountered a ladybug EVERY single time I vist her grave, the day both of my daughter's were born, the day I was almost in an accident.. there have been so many instances that there is no way it could possibly be coincidence. Ive even been just thinking about her and BOOM, lady bug lands on my face.. Multiple times I've been in a place where no bug should be able to access, any time of year, yet there one is! I was cleaning out her things from her house and found one in her sealed wedding veil. I thought it was probably dead, but nope! I had to rip it open to save it.. I take pics of the ladybugs because I don't want people to think I'm crazy lol I'm not hallucinating them!

As an athiest, I feel completely humbled. I think the job of the human race is to just keep the Earth habitable for future generations and live the best life we can. I think humans are on an equal level with all other animals. I've experimented and tried my best to experience all different kinds of religions as well as read the Bible. I think Christians tend to be very self-centered to think they have all of the answers. It's arrogant to think humans have the answers.

@hbenny5752
@hbenny5752 7 жыл бұрын
First point, how do you know what "the best life we can" really means if you don't have a moral compass in which to gauge it on? (i'm being serious, I really want to know what you think about this, not just another Christian trying to convert someone) - if your moral compass comes from laws or your parents, where did that get it from? Who decided that it's wrong to kill someone? If you have no higher power of any kind, then who says anything in particular is wrong? Second point, as a Christian, I am humbled and in awe of the fact that a Creator sought it necessary to bring me, a little sinner, in to His creation and let me live in this beautiful world, able to do as I please. I can then either choose to love Him or not. There are consequences to every action so you know that certain decisions will either be good or bad and therefore lead you toward good or bad things. Sure, good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people but those happen based on other decisions made by other people. I don't pretend to know everything, that is where faith comes in. Honestly, I think it takes even more faith to believe that we appeared out of absolutely nothing after millions of years than to believe an intelligent being, (maybe not my God even though I choose to believe it is God) just decided to create this world and received happiness when His creation loved Him back. It's hard to put in to words what all I mean with such a limited section to write but basically, I know VERY FEW Christians that believe they know all the answers. Faith is what we have to live on. However, I do know several atheists that believe they know for certain that no higher powers exist (how can you be so prideful to believe you know 100% of anything, how can you be so certain???). Who also refuse to have a civil conversation with someone who they think "believes in fairytales" - which is really rude and not humble at all thing to say to someone who just believes differently than they do. There are prideful people in every belief category but one thing a true Christian isn't is a know-it-all.
@dededeedles
@dededeedles 7 жыл бұрын
My moral compass personally comes from my human conscience. I don't know where the conscience comes from but you see it in a lot of species. Many animals feel it is inappropriate to kill their own kind because they care about survival and being a thriving species. Morals could come from evolution. In order for humans to survive, the brain is programmed to function in a way to help other humans, don't kill them, etc. My morals were given to me by my mom, in my opinion, who is an athiest. She was raised athiest and so were her parents and grandparents. They're all very wonderful people who were charitable and kind without religion in their lives. These are just ideas. I have no clue if I'm correct. That's just a more reasonable answer to me. I see man-made religion as a hindrance to science, that's why I won't be teaching my children about it. If they, or anyone else I know, make an educated decision to become religious in any way, I will not stop or judge them. I will, however, become offended if they try and indoctrinate anyone else or tell anyone else that their religion is better than what someone else might believe. I will never have all the answers, and I'm okay with that. I do have morals, and do strive to be a good person every day.

We are made up of atoms, and everything in the universe is made up of atoms as well. I believe that the basics of this concept is how electrons are constantly moving, and a test was done to show that they are moving in multiple different paths all at once. Therefore, because atoms consist of electrons, atoms move with them. This would mean that you and I, along with everything else in the universe (which again is all made of atoms), exists in more places than just right here, right now, in this reality if you will. Where the other versions of our reality's atoms are, no one is sure of. So, the idea is that they exists in alternate/parallel universes. Hope that helped!

Here's my theory on what happens when you die: We all have a "happy place". A place that we want to go to more than anywhere else. We all have people we want to go there with, as well, or maybe we don't. My theory is that when we die, we go to that place. For instance, if your happy place is the park in your town, you would be there when you die. It would be beautiful weather, you would be with whoever you wanted to be with, or if you wanted, you would be alone. You would go to the place that you are the happiest in, and for the rest of eternity, you're there. You never get sick of it. You never get bored. You never get upset with anyone you're with. It's just a happy place. There's no hell, there's no chance that you'll go somewhere bad. You just get to be happy for the rest of eternity.

So, what if, the experience of deja vu is telling you that you need to change something instead of confirming that you're on track? The whole deja vu theory states that you have already lived that experience so maybe you were brought back for a "re-do" of sorts? What if that's your sign to say, hey man 👋🏻 turn this way instead. Jenna, I think you're super insightful and it just got me thinking that there could be two sides to your deja vu theory!
@IceKreacher
@IceKreacher 6 жыл бұрын
Chantell It's weird; whenever I get déjà vu I continue doing whatever it was that happened in the deja vu, and carry it out, so to speak. I always get major anxiety when I reach the end of the deja vu experience and I continue on with "normal" life once more. As if I was supposed to say or do something else at the end of it, or if I'm on the wrong path. But there's no knowing because the deja vu has to end eventually, right? You can't possibly know if you're doing what you were supposed to do at that transition.

I always feel this way! Sometimes I know what I’m “supposed” to do or already did, and I can follow or change the path. I also know when I was meant to experience deja vu but it didn’t happen right and I miss it. It almost feels like being on the wrong train track or something.

Just to give context to some atheists' beliefs, I'm an atheist, and I don't think that humans are the best thing ever. In fact, they're no better or worse than any other thing that exists. Humans aren't more special or better than other types of creatures, which is part of the reason I don't think that there was a higher power who made the world for people. Of course, I don't know this for sure. Just my take on it! I know I'm playing with fire when I comment about belief systems on KZbin, of all places, just wanted to clarify that an atheist's personal beliefs may be as varied among their peers as any branch of religion.

People usually don't get offended at atheists because most people are. People get pissed off at Christians. There are so many accounts of peoples near death experiences on youtube. Lynne Dumas I agree with you. For me a thing that turned me off of other religions is the certainty that they have. In my brain it seems ridiculous to believe that this one thing is correct and created the universe because in the grand scheme of things we could just be a speck. The audacity of thinking that we know the origins of the universe or that somehow we worship its creator just boggles my mind.

Well there is only one truth. Do you believe the universe and everything in it was created by intelligent design? Or do you believe that we all came to be from randomness and chaos, and that we don't have a purpose? Those are the two broad categories of belief

Personally I believe there is nothing after life, so I just stop existing, the end. I understand that there are people that will be like 'nothing matters!!!' but to me that makes life all the more worth it, that makes my actions and influences on other people worth it, because you'd want the only life you have to be the best thing you could possibly make it, and you'd want other people's only lives to be great too. But I'd be cool with the 'everyone gets the afterlife they believe in' theory too.

It is very possible to be an atheist an still know the importance of being a decent human being. They were making it sound like all atheists don't care about their life and their actions because they don't think it will matter in the end. And I don't think u should live your life strictly based on how u want to be treated in the after life. You should do your best to be the person u want to be that hopefully positively affects those around u.

As an atheist I agree with this. I very strongly believe all people should behave ethically, and we dont need fear motovation to know right from wrong. Im not afraid of hell because i dont believe it exists... because of this I have murdered the exact amount of people I have ever wanted to in my life... which is zero! And I dont know any atheist who think that people are the top of the top and that we are the universes greatest creation. I dont think im any better then other species on earth or potentioally off of earth. I was offended by this podcast.

I was scrolling to find a comment like this before I made my own! I don't think Jenna intended to express that all or even most atheists are amoral, but it is a good point for the sake of argument that you should want to be kind to those around you and do what feels right FOR YOUR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS, not just for a mysterious higher power or out of fear, as you said. It would make sense for religions to use fear mongering in centuries past to get people to abide by rules of society (and not murder each other!) when there was a lot less widespread education.

Jenna you're talking about purpose and karma and types of rewards and accomplishments, but if the universe is so huge and we are only micro particles that are just riding along inside, why would we have a purpose? Why, in the grand scheme of things, why would the universe care if we helped other microparticles in our tiny lifetime (70~80 years is absolutely nothing compared to universe's timeline)? Rewards and appreciations are very human concepts, I would argue that thinking that something good will happen because you're nice or something bad will happen if you're evil is narcissistic and very specific to human consciousness. I think that would explain why so many cultures have the concepts of rewards and punishment in the afterlife because humans naturally expect actions to have consequences and would not want to think the evil people would receive no consequences when they pass away. My question is this; why would the universe care about human actions and why does the universe and our lives themselves have to have a purpose? Just leaving my thoughts love you guys x

I think that people who are only good out of the fear of hell are kind of terrifying. I'm good because I'm good. When I die, I believe that my body decomposes and that's it. Consciousness isn't energy. It's a brain function. Nothing gets transferred. I was told that we have dejavu because there are parallel universes and whenever you and your alternate you live something at the same time, you get dejavu... perhaps your alternate you also feels that sense but you don't know it because you're in this universe. Personally, I think it's just the long term memory in your brain remembering a similar experience and fills in the rest to be exactly like what is happening at that moment. Why don't we get dejavu every time we brush our teeth even though we do that everyday / some people two times a day? Because it has nothing to do with our long term memory, this is a habit / routine... but if we drive down a road you don't believe you've ever been on then experience dejavu, it's like your long term memory remembers a road with trees covering a certain way just like that one, or a gravel road, etc. then the other parts of your brain are like "oh yeah, I remember this -- except that, I don't remember that tree being there but let's flip it in the memory to mirror this one because we think this might be the same road" -- kind of like a glitch but not like the one in the matrix lol. we're all entitled to be crazy and this is one way my brain understands dejavu

My biggest fear though is having everyone I love die before me, and me being alone in the end. My brother is three years younger than me but it might so happen that he dies first because men's life spans are shorter than women's. And if my husband dies before me I'll never be able to sleep in peace. Yikes I just don't want to get old but that's incredibly childish and stupid :/

Jane Shen I know I’m 2 years late with this comment but... There’s this quote that really helps me with loss: “how lucky am I to have something that’s this hard to say goodbye to.” I think it’s from Dr. Suess but it helps me focus on appreciating what I have before it’s gone and realize that death/loss is just a part of life. If you’re still feeling the same way I hope this helped you :)

This is my biggest fear as well!!! My grandmother lost her mom and dad, husband, friend, and daughter (my mom) all within 15 years. I'm the only family she has left and seeing how lonely and depressed she is.. even with me spending time with her.. it terrifies me.😔 I'm not scared of dying.. just scared of dying last.

max knight okay then it's neither. But saying Christianity is false and so is atheism. Jenna's point was that was some people's views
@suchnothing
@suchnothing 7 жыл бұрын
Christianity believes humans are the top of any organism on the planet, only inferior to God/Christ, because according to their scripture humans were made in God's image. That's why we've believed for so long that we're superior to all other animals and have the natural right to control and own them. So max knight was headed in the right direction, but just didn't word it quite right. Of course, many (not all) atheists believe the same thing, but use evolution and culture as their justification rather than religion. It's just as problematic, because it can prevent us from seeing certain parts of the world as accurately as we could. It's held back our understanding of animal culture and language for decades, for example, by preventing us from even realizing those things may exist in the first place.

This is actually insane that I came across this podcast just now. I have never heard anyone in my life say what Jenna said about whatever someone truly believes actually happening to them after they die. It’s something I’ve thought about & I’m typically the one to bring it up to people so the fact that you said that actually gave me goosebumps. I absolutely love conversations like these because I feel like most people are so close minded to the beliefs they were brought up by, that they don’t like to think of other scenarios, because it’s uncomfortable for them to listen to anything else. It’s just important to remember that anything is truly possible because none of us know what it’s like until our day actually comes. Thank you guys.

It truly believe we watch over our loved ones bc my grandma died last year and I remembered this red bird that she loved and it was a cardinal. I see that bird around once it was by my house and I immediately thought of her. I believe that she sends that specific bird out to watch over my family and I. My dad has the same thing when his sister died he would get dreams of her telling him to have a safe trip or special occasions he believes she is looking after him. But u know that's just what I think so believe in whatever u want and I'll respect it

I'm confused. How does being an atheist correlate to the fact that an atheist thinks they are the pinnacle of evolution in the known universe? From my understanding, and I consider myself an atheist, that we don't believe that there is a "intelligent design" to the universe by a "supreme being." I believe in evolution and that, by chance, I evolved as a human being. I believe there is just one shot and then I will just be matter. However, that doesn't mean that I don't strive to be myself, to help my fellow man and animals. My morals are not decided by an external source but by my own internal drive. I want to learn, explore and know all I can *because* I believe this is my only chance to do that. Why would that immediately equate to "screw others" mentality? I just think that may be a bad logic leap.

I totally agree. The start of this podcast really annoyed me because I think they actually misunderstood what athiesm is. Personally, I think people who don't believe in a God are more likely to see every living thing as equal and the afterlife isn't the same as believing in aliens 😂 like what? People see athiesm as cynical and that kinda hurts my feelings because I think it's the most wholesome and open minded. We don't believe we're gonna be punished for disobeying a certain set of rules for a start, and you're right, it makes us want to cherish our only chance at life. Ugh it makes me mad the way some people look at it!!! 😂

i completely agree with jenna on the whole deja vu & power of the universe thing. i've always viewed deja vu as a validation that i am exactly where i need to be in that current moment, and i'm on the right track. I always try to step back and try not to consciously control what i am doing, and let my soul guide me, and end up having these weird coincidence moments, and kind of like Raven Simone visions where i predict/get a vision of what's going to happen right before it happens

why would not believing in something that's never been proven be selfish? I don't think atheists think that they're the higher and the best there is, it's not about that. I don't think that we're alone in the universe but I also don't believe in anything spiritually higher. aren't those two different things? also I think religious people are more prone to believing that we're the best and the only thing there is. I think you may have a wrong idea about atheism. atheists also don't think life is meaningless in general, I wonder where you got that from. hope this message wasn't mean because I absolutely LOVE this podcast.

I agree to certain extent, but what their basically saying is that it's ridiculous to look at this universe and not believe that there is something bigger than us as human beings. I actually used to be an atheist, so I get that what their saying sounds strange, but I don't think they meant it as you think they did. (I copied another person's comment because what that person said is how I feel)

I 100% agree with your comment. I love this podcast and respect Jenna and Julien SO much, but I want to reiterate the point that atheism is more about not knowing and not accepting something as true with the lack of evidence. I think I speak for most atheists when I say, I don't believe that humans are "the highest being" in existence, I think that's a huge misunderstanding. We understand that we're a speck on a speck of a planet in a vast, infinite universe(s) and we're very much irrelevant in the grand scope of things. That being said, we don't think life is meaningless, of course there's meaning, we create meaning in our lives every day (whether that's through personal goals or by following religious doctrine or whatever). We just don't know/ don't have any scientific evidence as of now, of a "higher being" as described by the religious texts we currently know (like the Iliad &Odyssey, Bible, Quran, etc). Now this is just my thoughts personally, but I believe there are other "beings" in existence other than us because the universe is infinite therefore it would be ridiculous to think that we're the only planet with life (we just haven't developed the technology to contact these species). I just have an issue with the assertion that there IS, 100%, a higher being (emphasis on "higher") that is responsible for creating the universe and life, because we just don't know. It's not a fact, it may be proven one day, or it may not. I don't have any problem with people believing whatever they want to believe in, everyone has that right, but it should not be accepted as a fact until it is experimentally proven.

100% agree. And I would argue it's FAR more narcissistic to think we as humans have souls that are SO important they must continue to exist in some other form or realm even after our bodies have decayed. Why are we different from any other collection of atoms? (we're not)

my favourite theory on life is that your soul has a purpose to learn and understand everything so your lives depend on what you want to experience, hence the belief everything happens for a reason. so accepting the things that happen and learning from it etc. and when you déjà vu it’s your soul remembering its plan for that life (meaning when you have it, you’re on the right path because it’s in the plan). my personal fave take on it, going with the flow and trying to understand the happenings.
