Ooh i love a bit of nerdy maths, although I kind of can't be bothered doing the maths, but also kind of love the idea of custom fit socks. I already do a larger foot size compared to leg (wide foot problems 🙄), but curious about the instep area...hmmm...maybe for my next sock...

The moment you mentioned the math in this book, I went to Amazon and bought a (used) copy! I have my undergrad in math - although I started out wanting to be an engineer! I'm five feet tall and wear a U.S 5.5 to 6 shoes so I love watching your updates and how things fit you; they tend to fit me the same way! Anyway, my book came today and I already measured my foot! Can't wait to read the rest. I don't think I've commented on your videos before, but I truly love them! My friend is also a true lefty knitter, too. Cheers!

Reference your Kutur Wrap cardigan sleeves - I think the more open stitches around the armhole result from the short row stitches, rather than the body slipped stitches. Although this sleeve design is used a lot, I am not always happy with how the join of the body and sleeve looks. I’ve tried different short row methods and knitting it tightly, but still get the same result. Regardless, it’s looking beautiful.

That is totally cool about the formulas for fitting socks! I’m a dietitian and use math daily in my work and I love math. I’m just starting my very first pair of socks and will definitely be getting that book. Thank you for sharing 😊

10:38 i have a tip for this actually! i literally always slip the first stitch of a round when i'm working back and forth, and for the longest time my drop shoulder pieces had those huge gaps where i picked up. what you should do instead of picking up right into the edge, pick up into the center of the stitches in the NEXT column over from the edge. it does create a seam on the inside of the garment, but you really don't feel it, and the results look so clean and tidy.

When it comes to negative ease on socks, I actually have different experiences depending on the yarn/fiber I'm using, as well as the stitch pattern. I find that lace socks tend to stretch out the most over the day compared to vanilla/textured/colorwork socks, and merino socks also tend to stretch out a lot more than my other wool socks (most of my sock yarns just say "wool," which isn't super helpful). I actually don't use merino for socks anymore as I've found it's not durable enough for me - I wear my hand-knit socks under heavy boots, so they need to stand up to a lot of friction. There's an article on Interweave where Kate Atherley talks about her favorite sock yarns and why she likes them, and I've found her preferences to be pretty similar to my own in terms of durability.

Construction-wise I think there is a risk that the edge where you finished increases and started knitting straight will flare, without tension of the i-cord (if you attach it lower, at the level where you placed the hole. Just finished this cardigan and I get the look you are going for, the way is designed it does cinch in quite high on the torso. I think Sari may have done it so that it can be worn just over a bra and still provide enough coverage.

I fall into the 2-3 inches of negative ease. I did Knitty Natty’s sock course and while my first sock did fit well, it wasn’t as tight as I would like. I ended up keeping my same formula and sizing down and needles and can confirm I have the perfect sock formula now.

Hi Amy, a stellar episode as usual. The custom fit socks journey seems very worthwhile and I'm going to look for the book in my local library. I wonder if you would comment on the decision to start including sponsorships on your podcast. Quite a few knitting podcasters have started doing it and I presume it's all about getting a better financial return on your efforts, and it's hard to argue with that. But as someone who already pays to avoid ads (YT premuim), I am a bit gutted that I'm getting ads anyway. Anyway, it would be good to hear your thoughts before I complain too much, and probably most people don't care.

I tested the Kuutar wrap and I ended up frogging it. The pickup at the sleeve bothered me so much. I also didn’t have enough stitches to pick up so I had to pick up multiples into the slipped stitches which exaggerated the holeyness even more. I also didn’t love how open the gauge was which is definitely a me problem. However I want this in my wardrobe so bad! I hope you end up loving yours!!

Does the sock book also talk about selecting a heel based on your foot profile? I just ordered that book. I am a former engineer and a current tech writer, and this sounds fun! (I also make my socks with 64 stitches.)

Oh, one more thing I MUST say. At one point you said "I casted on". "Casted" is not a word and I want to avoid introducing it to our language. The correct language is "I cast on". I only mention it because vloggers are influencers. :)

I wonder if you like your socks tight because of your need for a short gusset? I would expect that the heel of a standard sock with 70 stitches is way too big for you and so you’ve gravitated to the very tight socks to get the better heel fit?
