I am 75 and per the daily dozen I started taking 1000 mcg of cyanocobalamin B12. I soon started having extreme vertigo. At first I did not know why but realized the one thing I had done differently was the cyanocobalamin B12. I stopped taking it for a while and the vertigo went away. I feel sure it was the B12 supplement . I am going back on the smaller dosage of Methylcobalamin. I wish there were more doctors that had whole food plant based nutrition education. It is so frustrating talking to doctors who don’t understand the importance of the food we eat and are not trained in nutrition.

This (and many of his other) videos have saved my life. After years of diabetes, I lost 80 lbs. But never went plant based only about 3 months ago. Health and diabetes improved, Virtually reversed the high blood sugars. But neuropathy got worse. I had no idea about B12 deficiency and plant only diet. The nerve problems improved and became bearable overnight with sublingual B12. I think a b12 deficiency was the reason for the worsening nerve pain. Thank you Dr. Greger, 1000 times!

To my understanding sublingual addresses the symptoms but doesn't actually fix the deficiency.

My Md. told me I was off the chart on B12 via blood test and also on iron. I do have hemachromatosis as well, after cooking with iron skillets daily for most of my life, all 74 years of it. But if B12 is water soluble, how can it be so high measured by blood tests?

Did Greger ever mention if cyanocobalamin and flaxseeds, due to low doses of cyanide that our liver has to detoxify, is safe during pregnancy or should we opt in for another form temporarily?

The whole B12 issue is confusing. A huge spread in recommendations from Dr. Gregor's 50 mcg per day, or 2000 mcg per week to Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD's 1,000 mcg per day.

I'm sticking with the natural form of B-12, methylcobalamin, even if you have to take more. I've read that the synthetic version, cyanocobalamin, metabolizes with a byproduct of cyanide.
@pinkcougar4570
@pinkcougar4570 Жыл бұрын
Yes and Dr. Greger mentions that it's a safe amount as long as you do not take more than 1-2 spoons of flaxseeds a day and B12 has such a small amount that it doesn't even bother the liver at all. Plus for flaxseeds the cyanide disappears if heated with liquid, so for example added to bread due to wet dough and heat. Then you could eat than a couple of spoons a day.

'MMA suppression is a measure of B12 sufficiency' - I'd like to know more about this. Does is refer to Methylmalonic Acid? I've got the FUT2 gene variant so apparently I need more B12 hence I'm interested in B12 sufficiency.

MMA under control is an indicator of b12 sufficiency. But not 100% so. There are cases of regular Homocysteine, MMA and b12 levels in the blood in people with severe deficiency. The only guaranteed way is to supplement and observe if any symptoms are alleviated.

Does insulin long term, high amounts daily cause Vit b12 deficiency? Neuropathy, nerve pain?
@PhilWhelanNow
@PhilWhelanNow 3 жыл бұрын
Neuropathy is strongly associated with diabetes, and has a relationship with high blood sugar. I’m not an expert, but it’s also been related with lipid dysregulation, and interference with the sodium channels. There’s scores of different types of peripheral neuropathy though.. www.neurologyadvisor.com/topics/pain/the-role-of-sodium-channels-in-painful-neuropathies/

Bit disappointed with the podcast to be honest, I think it should of started with answering the questions "what is B12", "how is it produced and by what", "what foods contain B12, plant sourced or not". I find it hard to believe that people going on 90 are B12 deficient and the only efficient way of getting to optimal levels is pill supplementation.

@@MrNymphen Hi, I'm not a MD or a scientific. Also I'm not english, so feel free to ask if you don't understand something. To my knowledge, if older people (even meat eaters) have difficulty to get sufficient vitamin B12 it's because their digestive system work less well compared to younger people. I don't remember the details, but if you are interested, this is a topic to look at.

It's a myth that they never CAD. www.google.com/amp/s/www.huffpost.com/entry/eskimo-myth_b_5268420/amp In the latest study, researchers at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute took a fresh look at the original Greenland studies that started the myth. It turned out that Bang and Dyerberg did not study the native populations directly. Rather, they relied on death reports and hospital admission figures, which, in rural areas, turned out to be less than reliable.

Whole foods are the diet, however water is no longer giving us B12 and our veggies are so clean that they no longer have B12. So tap or bottled water and veggies = no b12, we don't tend to drink from streams anymore or eat soil where b12 is found.
@bonnienorth964
@bonnienorth964 3 жыл бұрын
If your “point” is that a WFPB diet is deficient because it requires B12 supplementation, and therefore unadvisable, you’re mistaken. Just because B12 supplementation is required doesn’t mean we shouldn’t eat WFBP diets. When I was a whole foods meat eater, I was B12 deficient. So was everyone in my family of origin, despite each of us having varied diets. Plenty of omnivores are B12 deficient and need to supplement with B12.
