The wild west was a very real part of our history. Just don't get reality twisted up with the movie depictions. We Americans love a good spaghetti western, but it is a highly glorified, and romanticized depiction of what really happened. You were quite likely to die alone, in agony, at a relatively young age. Often due to an unfortunate condition such as poisonous snakes, dehydration/dysentery, or a blood born illness like tuberculosis. All of which are agonizing ways to leave this world.

this is gonna be a great Minecast. About the brothel and mining town connection. Here's a fun fact. Butte, Montana, which was a huge mining town, had an operating brothel into the 1980s. It closed in 1982. The town also had a large asian population. The brothels would operate next to the noodle houses so they had fold down beds in the alley ways between them. You could get a woman and a bowl of noodles delivered to your bed in the alley via a lil phone. I used to live in Butte and you can still see the anchor points in some of the brick walls in the alleys. Pretty interesting history.

Cody won't ever be on Safety Third. He was upset. He thinks these people stole the podcast idea from him, and made it without informing him. William asked him to be on it once but he declined. This is straight from the horse's mouth, from his subreddit. Look it up. (I can't put link, even a hint, because it's being flagged as spam) I personally think Cody is being irrational, as: 1) anybody could've pitched a podcast idea. 2) he is not following through with the idea. launching a podcast is not simple. talk is cheap. William otoh walked the talk and put the effort to make it a reality. 3) Cody is not in his sound mind from a lot of problems wrt KZbin and personal relationships.

The timecapsule discussion reminded my of a sci-fi story. Essentially a human gets time-capsuled in the now-time and get uncapsuled 2k years later. In the meantime the remaining population of earth fled due to some sort of disaster on a generation-ship and most history got lost, only oral history remains. So time-capsuled human wakes up and gets sort of treated like a historic artifact and talks about Old Earth, New Earth people know that there was a monarchy and about King Elvis who must have ruled Earth...

50:20 - So calculations taking the energy route as William did: First, working out speed, so the maximum kinetic energy equals the gravitational potential energy at the top, so Ek=Ep (1), where: Ek - kinetic energy Ep - potential energy So, assuming there is no air resistance, you have Ek = (1/2)mv^2 (2), Ep = mgh (3), where: m - mass g - gravitational field strength on Earth at sea level h - height v - velocity Then, substituting (2) and (3) into (1), you get: (1/2)mv^2 = mgh (4) but you can divide both sides by m, as it cancels out: (1/2)v^2 = gh (5) which can be rearranged, in order to calculate v: (1/2)v^2 = gh (5) v^2 = 2gh (6) v = sqrt(2gh) (7) So, you can use these values: g = 9.81 kg/m^2 h = 270 m (900ft = 270m) Subbing into (7): v = sqrt(2 * 9.81 * 270) v = sqrt(5297.4) v = 72.78 m/s So, now we have the max velocity, now to work out the time. For this, we can use the equation v = u + at (8), where: v = final velocity u = initial velocity a = acceleration t = time First, let's rearrange (8) to calculate t: u + at = v (8) at = v - u (9) t = (v - u)/a (10) We can then use these values: v = 72.78 m/s u = 0 m/s a = 9.81 m/s^2 Subbing in the values into (10): t = (72.78 - 0)/9.81 t = 72.78/9.81 t = *7.42 s* So, it would take you roughly 7.5 seconds to fall down a 900ft shaft w/o air resistance. Most likely it would take you around 10 +/- 2 seconds to hit that bottom, since air resistance would exist in the real world, and the terminal velocity of a human being is 55.555... m/s. So basically, you'd have a good 10 seconds or so to contemplate life, which would feel longer as your brain speeds up to try to figure a way to survive Man, I loved Nat 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Physics

this podcast was great! in australian production mines ground support is a very big thing! some different types of ground support is mesh being held up by friction locking bolts with plates to prevent the mesh falling down, also for areas of bad ground, they may use chemical resin bolts instead of friction locking bolts. also if the ground is really fine and crumbly, they may use a product called shot crete which is fibres trapped in concrete like what william had talked about! scaling down loose rock is a big part of our support cycle to bring it back to solid ground.

About the sump pump controls - just look into off the shelf stuff for sewage ejectors. You can get a box with several floats and wire in different things to do at different levels.

William asking to leave beef in the mine; look up the process of dry aging beef. If you leave a big enough piece of meat down there it makes it taste better (under the right conditions...). It's one of the ways they preserved meat before refrigeration
