When you see a "broom handle" sticking out of a hole inside a mine, please don't touch it! It's probably a tamping stick. My first day going to work after getting all of the required certifications, I had to witness a fellow miner Be carried out after being pretty much decapitated. Anytime you handle sticks of dynamite. You have to wear really good leather gloves. Because if ya don’t. It will cause your blood vessels to dilate. Giving you a spinal headache. Which trust me....you definitely don’t want. Also some blasting caps can be set off by static electricity alone. So I would definitely do some research on how old it is and what kind it’s is. Before messing with any of the explosives down there. If I had to guess. I would guess that it’s probably harmless as old as it is. But I would definitely check first lol 🤙🏽

For those who don't understand. Dynamite is nitroglycerin "stabilized" by mixing it with diatomaceous earth. That works quite well until it starts oozing out of the dynamite. Then it's just as touchy as nitro is reputed to be. In the early days of rail, a crate was "lost" at a station's cargo area-no bill of lading, no mfgr marks, leaking an oily substance. The station manager decided to find out what was in the crate by opening it with a crowbar. The explosion destroyed the station and did significant damage to surrounding structures.

I agree on 3d scanning/mapping but so that there can be a full 3D map of the mine. With a 3D map of the whole accessible system you could find where different areas connect. Running a scan between the various known mine openings, and then scanning within them. (By keeping the scan going between openings you would have each map connected so possible connections could be found, or even made. The only issue is time, and equipment needed to do such a task would be rather expensive, and the process time consuming.

I really hope Mr. Beast is up for the challenge, id love to watch that episode and the competitions during the stay down there. He’s famous for hide and seek, that would be cool to watch using every level, probably a bit dangerous but the suspense and danger is the fun.
@leannepaxton50123 жыл бұрын
I think it is a great idea to get @MrBeast there for a challenge video, purely from a numbers point of view. Mr Beast has one of the biggest audiences on KZbin. I’m guessing that the vast majority of people who might watch that video on Mr Beast’s channel, won’t know about Cerro Gordo and what Brent is trying to do there. So, by introducing #MrBeast audience to it, it may bring in some new donations to Brent’s GoFundMe for Cerro Gordo, or at the very least Brent may get a lot of new subscribers for his channel, which in itself would help Brent make more money from views of his videos. All in all, I think it was very clever to try and get Mr Beast to come do a challenge there.
@Azsunes3 жыл бұрын
Hide and seek probably not a good idea takes 45 minutes to get down to the 700 level he said in previous video, also when people are running around getting excited might slip down an underwound cliff.

The "broom handle" is most likely a tamping rod. Use extreme caution with no forced air ventilation there could be pockets of O2 depleted still air.
@somethingsomeonesaid64553 жыл бұрын
true. This mine does have "chimneys" that extend all the way down to the 900 foot level?...there are some paths on a map that go deeper, but I know that there is two chimneys for the whole mine. Brent went spelunking down one of them and then back up.
@infinus53 жыл бұрын
dont think thats a tamping rod, its probably a post to attach wire too. You see that same bit of wood everywhere in PNW mines for power and communication lines.

I'm in awe every time I see some of these old workings when I think of the shear ingenuity that the old timers put into accomplishing these gargantuan labor intensive projects. To think just the act of cutting the support timbers used was done mainly with hand saws. Never mind having to pack everything to the mine site then down into the mine and then having to haul the ore out and all of this was done for silver. When weighed against the amount of time and energy it took to pull it from the ground you got to wonder some times are we crazy. There had to be some pretty horrific injuries and I'm sure people died down there too. So my hats off to those rough and tumble men from our past because they where some bad ass mofos.

It is so amazing that those men in the past could do all that work. Can you imagine being in that hole all day or longer with the really dim lights they used to have. They wouldn't hardly shine past your arm length. Then all the tools and lumber up and down. Dynamite at times. Such a dangerous job. It's beyond my imagination.

Love how you guys go into recovery mode and make a plan to bring back amazing artefacts, really hope you find a way to the 1100 ft level one day. It would amazing to see as no one has likely been down there for a long time. Can’t wait to see your challenge with Mr breast and to see you guys back at Cerro Gordo again. Hopefully next time you can take the rest of the crew down with you to. The video editing was amazing and really like the editing style.

This might sound like a terrible idea but if you all are gonna stay in the mine for days then the dynamite will always be a risk. But............. if you got chicken feed and water and a dozen chickens let loose with feed sprinkled on the concern areas then.......... Yeah, yeah, I know it's a terrible suggestion but I still think that You're worth at least 3 chickens. :)

As I understand it, the nitroglycerin can leach out of whatever filler medium is in the dynamite and forms crystals which are incredibly shock sensitive.
