In particular one with many steps all in amazing rich detail, except for one step which says "connect Skype Computer" with a very misleading diagram and no other details.

Gee you really get it. Thank you for the detailed and comprehensive explanation unlike other videos that just show and tell you how to plug in cables. You actually tell us why we need to do these things and what the equipment does and how it interacts with the mixer/equipment. I'm subscribing with a big thumbs up! Thanks again. Just ride! :)

Very helpful Ryan. I've felt like a bit of a tool, buying a nice mixer with two AUX sends, hearing about this mystical "Mix - Minus" for a long time and not knowing how to put it together or even what is was good for. Mind you, up to this year I haven't been attempting Skype or podcasts, just recording a few microphones directly to DAW software on a desktop PC and stitching in music files to create pre-planned shows. I'll definitely check out your other tutorials.

Ryan Urlacher Thanks! That helps. I assume the iMic goes where the green and pink lines are in your video next to the computer. Also, if you provide an affiliate link to amazon of the cables I need, I will click on them. I notice you have shownotes embedded into youtube. It would be helpful to have active links in there to amazon. I am about to buy some equipment so as a way to help you out, I will wait until this evening to buy my stuff in the hopes you have time to provide those affiliate links. Also, I don't know what software you use, but do you only record onto the Roland or is there a way to record directly into Audition on the computer AND the external recorder. Thanks and Cheers!

Thanks, Ryan! Great detailed video that includes every step (unlike most others). I think I can do the same thing using a Scarlett 6i6 Audio Interface and its included MixControl software. I have an iRig 2 and plan on recording phone calls with iPhone for a Podcast. I think I can just create a separate mix for the callers so they do not hear their own voices. Person at Guitar Center said this is entirely possible, so I think it's a go. Thoughts?

Awesome video. Question I'm using a Zoom H6 as my external recorder. Primarily I have my mic connected to one of the lines into the H6 and then my cohost through Skype on another Input. For mixing purposes is there a way to separate the same tracks coming through the mixer into the external recorder. For example my mic is considered one line my co-host line#2 soundboard as line#3 etc? Hope my question makes sense.

hey Ryan, thanks for the mix minus tutorial. it helped to clarify the complexity of all the inputs & outputs. I know each setup is "slightly" different, but 2 quick questions... (1) do I need 2 sound cards to make this work & (2) do I need to make any sound setting adjustments to either my Windows laptop or my Skype account. I got everything set up as per your video, but could not hear my guest. running your setup thru my Behringer Q802 mixer & monitering output thru my Tascam DR-40 recorder. Thanks man!

Hi +ryan urlacher, just got into some serious mixer setup thanks to your videos. I just bought the mackie profx 12v2. Not sure if this has been answered already, so I apologize if it has. I have the Behringer Xenyx 892 mixer and my Stereo Aux Return has a L & R port, instead of just one like your Aux Send has. Would I just need to hook up another 1/8" TRS to 1/4" TS (x2) cable to send the Skype back to the computer?

Really nicely done. This clarified a lot for me. I have lost audio on 2 podcasts just using Skype and Audacity on my computer, so it is time to use my Roland recorder on these interviews. I am done losing audio. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, and I am an idiot. Anyway, this was a great tutorial, and I learned a lot. Question: you show two different mixers on this tutorial. Seems like the second one has more options. Would you recommend the second mixer over the first?
@RyanUrlacher
@RyanUrlacher 8 жыл бұрын
Both great mixers for sure. It all depends on what your going to do and how many inputs your going to use etc....For 99% of podcasters this mixer would be just perfect and have room to grow. This is the one I've used for years now. amzn.to/2der5zL

Podcast Mix Minus | Complete Tutorial on How to Set Up & Record Mix Minus Skype How to set up and record using a mix minus: This is a complete tutorial video on how to set up, use and record a mix minus in a podcast/broadcast type environment. AFFILIATE LINK: Please consider using my Amazon affiliate link to purchase any items if this free information and video were helpful to you. If you are a podcaster of into broadcast media of any kind then there will come a time when you want to record an interview via Skype or another online service. Most of us podcasters use a mixer of some kind. I use a Mackie 1202-VLZ4 right now in my podcast studio. I have always used Mackie mixers for podcasting and have nothing but great things to say about them. If you are using a mixer and going to record an interview then you will want to set up a mix minus. If you don't, then the person on the other end of Skype will get a loop back and hear their own voice and it will likely be delayed. This is extremely annoying and it is very hard to keep your train of thought, so get rid of the loop back with a mix minus. Setting up a mix minus is very easy once you watch the above free tutorial video. I also provided you with adiagram (below) of how to set up a mix minus for your future reference. It is the same diagram I use in the video. Simply put, you are sending the person on the other end of Skype your entire mix, minus their own voice using the "aux send" out port and turning the "aux" knob for that particular channel strip off on your mixer. Your mix includes your mic inputs, Skype/computer conversation input, and another device such as an iPad or computer for your music input if you like. You then run a 1//8 inch TRS to 1/4 inch TS cable from you mixer out of the "aux send" port back into the 1/8 inch TRS (3.5 mm input jack) on your computer. All you have to do then is turn the "aux" knob on the channel strip your Skype conversation is on counter-clockwise until it is off. Boom, you have a mix minus. If this doesn't make much sense I guarantee it will when you watch the video. Griffin iMic PodcastAFFILIATE LINK: Many newer computers only come withe a 3.5mm headphone jack out and not a 3.5mm input jack and you will need both for a mix minus podcast interview. To accomplish this I suggest you purchase a Griffin iMic, which connects to your computer via USB and then has both a 3.5 mm output and input jack. Minimum items you will need for a mix minus: Computer/Skype 1/8 inch TRS to dual 1/4 inch TS cable (computer to mixer)(a second cable if you are going to hook up another input device such as and iPad for music) 1/8 inch TRS to 1/4 inch TS cable (mixer back to your computer via the "aux send" port) Griffin iMic (if you computer doesn't have both a 3.5 mm output and input jack) Additional: I always record into an external recording device and I use the Roland R-05 Digital Recorder. I prefer this over recording back into another computer using Garage Band or Audacity. Some podcasters do it this way, but I explain in my complete "Learn to Podcast" video tutorial series why that may not be such a good idea. Help! I tried running a set up like this and my guests (via hangouts or skype) can hear the music but as soon as they talk, the music fades, swells and becomes muddy for them. How do I stop this from happening???
@RyanUrlacher

+Jaime Pierson Very typical for that to happen. Nothing can realy be done about it. When using Skype or G hangouts music over voice can sound bad to others on the other end.

Forgot to mention I have the "Made in the USA" Mackie 12 channel Micro series 1202 Mackie mixer. On a real tight budget here and picked this up on ebay for 80 bucks with free shipping. Also using a Zoom H2 for my recording...any thoughts on cables? Have a great day sir and keep up the fine work! Michael.

The cables I show in this video are exactly what you will need for the hookup. You'll need a Dual 1/4" TS to 1/8" TRS (3.5mm) to go from your mixer output into the Zoom. XLR mic cables of course to go into your mixer from you mic. You will need to go into your mixer from your computer with the sameDual "TS to 1/8" TRS (3.5mm). Just depends on how many mics and inputs/outputs you will have. Hope this helps. Here are some ideas and reasonable price. These are the exact cables I use. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000068O3C/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000068O3C&linkCode=as2&tag=youhitecred-20 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000068O1P/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000068O1P&linkCode=as2&tag=youhitecred-20 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002PAOMSY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B002PAOMSY&linkCode=as2&tag=youhitecred-20

Thank you for this video. Very useful. So, here's what's not working for me: caller cannot hear my audio unless I speak directly into the mic on my Galaxy s7. Every cable I use works. My mic on chan 1 works. FX Send works. Caller audio on 3/4 works. Killing FX return on 3/4 works. TRRS splitter on phone works. Everything works just like it should work with that one small exception: caller cannot hear me unless I speaking into the phone. What am I missing? EDIT: Upon further research, I've discovered this might be an OMTP vs CTIA issue. Ordering a CTIA splitter now. Will let you know!

Thanks Ryan for the great vid. The best one I've seen so far to explain the mix minus process. I have a quick question though - I have a Mackie 402VLZ4 mixer and what I'm trying to set up in my voice over studio is a way to use Skype as a phone patch so I can have directed sessions. Everything I've set up so far works great except two things (I think!) - 1) How (if possible with the 402) do I have the Skype input (the VO directions) on a separate channel using the "stereo pan" function? The idea is to not have a take ruined if the session director coughs or something in their background is noisy while I'm talking as I wouldn't be able to edit that out. 2) Is there a mix minus workaround if the mixer doesn't have a Aux Send? Thanks again for the great video and hope you can help. Cheers!

There are mixers that have a usb out that can record multi multi channel, but the one you have does not have that capability. That would be my suggestion so each audio is on a separate track.

Hello Ryan how are ya today? I just subscribed to you and I'm looking forward to some awesome info. I have a question sir. A friend of mine gave me two perfectly good Dell OptiPlex putters (The old flat gray ones) they work just fine and can carry a Skype load while surfing believe it or not. What I plan on doing is to run each one with there own channel on my Mackie mixer so I can have a Guest caller and a listener caller lines. Using additional sound cards is confusing to me and my buddy says I can do the same thing with additional putters...your thoughts sir.

Boy, I will try to help. I think I know what you are describing. If you wan't to have more than one Skype caller you can do so. There are other options like Google Hangouts and some others where you can have multiple persons on the same call.

I have a Mackie 802vlz4. Everything pretty much looks the same as the 802vlz3. Here's my question. I have a Zoom h5. I'll be using just one mic in my set up, not 3. And I'll be making use of the mix minus setup as you've described to record a Skype caller. In the Zoom h5, you have two recording options, namely, stereo or multi. Which should I use? My plan is to edit the interview in post production using garageband, etc. BTW, do you use wav or convert to mp3? I have a mac for editing purposes. Thanks.

+CuteMonster I always record in .wav for the best quality. After post edit I convert to mp3 and upload to my audio media hosting service. Honestly, I have never used the zoom H5, so I am not familiar with the settings etc. I use the Roland R05 and back up to a Tascam DR-60 at the same time. Those I am familiar with.

Great stuff!!! I am setting up my audio studio and am having some trouble. I watched your videos on youtube and thought they were great. Here is my specific issue: I have my mix minus set up. Everything works but the audio from skype is terribly "hot". I have all my levels on the mixing board turned way down and when i send it to my other computer and into adobe audition it is terribly hot. But because I have the levels turned down so low on my board I can hardly hear it through my headset even though it is blowing up my levels in adobe audition. What advice can you give me....I am trying to get as good of quality interviews as I can. My audio by the way through the board is quite good and has not been an issue at all. tried turning the volume down to 50% on the skype computer and still does not work...If you could assist me would be greatly appreciated.

+Jeff Tigger Erhardt Super glad you liked the videos Jeff. So many things to address. It is another computer with Skype going into the mixer. If so, make sure the output levels are down a bit on that device. Also, the computer with Audition you are going into may need the "input" levels in settings turned down. A few things to try. If you need one on one consulting (fee) you can hit me up at www.yourhitechredneck.com/contact & we can see if we can find a time.
