In 2016, Christian author Carey Scott was the victim of plagiarism by a major celebrity-international speaker and evangelist Christine Caine. Caine reportedly copied entire portions of Scott’s book, forcing Scott to take legal action to settle the issue. Yet for Scott, the negative impact of this event lingers. Meanwhile, Caine, who never apologized, continues to enjoy the spotlight.
On this edition of THE ROYS REPORT, Carey Scott shares her painful story . . . involving not just having her work stolen, but also being persistently bullied online. Scott also reveals details of interactions with Caine and shares behind-the-scenes circumstances that compelled Scott to settle.
These events raise broader issues. Is plagiarism a big deal? If so, why? And how is it that Christian celebrities get away with plagiarism-seemingly without any consequences? Join us as we seek to shine a light on these important issues of integrity.

After watching this, I lost respect for Christine Caine's ministry. I read the several plagiarism comparisons and it's really sad. its not just one small copy, its several, very intentional. Carey Scott, the Lord is on your side!!

When I was doing my theology degree every essay was put through plagiarism programs, I once lost marks because I accidentally left out an end quote comma. In academia it is very serious. It is so disappointing to me that these publishers do not care if other people's work is being stolen. It is deceitful and people need to be called out. It is discouraging that so often those who speak out are the ones being judged and accused ("you just care about money") and the people who are lying and cheating just keep doing it.

Grateful for the Roys Report. There is so much of the 'bigger' leadership snuffing out the voice of the 'little' guy who is trying to do the right thing. And you give a voice to the little guys, in a fair objective way. Alot of people have been burned by the church, and feel alone especially when all they can see are others repeating and gaslighting. Also if others who aren't Christian get burned, it definitely kills the witness. Thank you for keeping them honest

Thanks for introducing me to Carey - a genuine woman walking out her faith in the midst of many trials. What a beautiful woman with an amazing testimony. I remember God teaching me early in my walk - "in small things - in all things" referring to integrity and consistency - if you don't have integrity in the seemingly small things - you don't have integrity at all.

As an author, I'm deeply saddened that Carey was so mistreated. I'm so sorry. I stand with you, Carey, in support of the importance of calling out ungodly behavior. Keep speaking godly truth that yes, as you say, "stealing is stealing" and God hates stealing. Thank you for standing up for all of us who share our stories and our ideas. Keep writing!

I just came across this video and I think you both have discussed this topic with grace and godly maturity. Over the last couple years I have become very uncomfortable with the Christian circuit of speakers that seem to have made a business out of the Word of God. I am not against believers writing books and doing conferences but not all do them for the right reasons. To me it just confirms how we must be led by the Holy Spirit on who give our attention to and how they must never replace our personal time in the Word. God bless you both!

I was once asked from an assistant to a very well known pastor/author to be part of a team to read and summarize books in detail. She would have us write up summaries of the books and turn them in to her. This well known leader was so busy with traveling and meetings, now i see how he could author so many books. I dont know if someone higher up had the task compiling everything into another hit book. I declined the offer. Unfortunately i once sat in a Christian writing seminar a year they discussed doing the same thing! But, happy to report, i know other christian authors who really teach how to write a book. They are the real deal!

People who pretend to be about the gospel should not confused with people who believe and share the gospel, even if the politicians who have co-opted the name think the gospel stands or falls on their politics, and allow their political cronies in religion to get by with murder. It has exactly zero to do with the gospel. Most of all, do not hold the gospel accountable, for those who scoff at it, and use up its credibility.

Thank you, Julie, for another fine podcast. This is heart-wrenching. This poor lady has had a series of awful experiences - how beautiful is it that she still sees God's goodness and faithfulness through it all and authors books and devotionals to encourage others - no matter what their plight. How awful to be betrayed by - as you put it - a Christian 'celebrity'. Christine Caine has a great testimony and seems to be doing a great job with A21 - but now, I'm not so sure I trust her testimony anymore. I don't really know if she is on the front line of her ministry of A21 because she is a keynote at many high-paying Christian conferences all year. I read her book 'Unashamed' and remember reading the very section mentioned in this podcast. It stood out from the rest of the book - now I know why. I also tend to remember reading that these books require a 'team' to write, perhaps based on Christine's talks, and if this is the case, maybe someone on Christine's team has let her down in this instance - someone she was depending on to write her book for her.

Was Christine Caine repentant? Did she apologize? I am shocked. 😔 She should have apologized and taken all of the questionable passages out of her book. Also, another thing I found out from Julie's videos that I don't understand... how is it acceptable in general that people don't write the book but put the name on it, and it's ok?!? On the cover they should honestly write "I didn't write this book, but my staff writers did." 😅

I so appreciate both of these ladies. These healing words from Ms. Scott toward the end (not much after 44:00)... (Speaking about abuse... ) "It's the hardest when it's from somebody in the faith; because you feel like you've found a team, and you kind of let your guard down, and so when that happens, it catches you off-guard and you just don't see it coming. " Those words are so validating and so canceling of the shame I have felt in a situation where I was being manipulated to compromise on boundaries that are important to me... my guard was down because of a close-knit community I'd thought we'd found... Thank you to Julie for making this space with such grace, and to Ms. Scott for sharing openly and articulately.

God is a God of prosperity but listen to what christine says. Very little talk of the true prosperity of a son of God. Lots a begging, promotion of desperation, lots of circular talking and waiting for God to come thru. . Look at the organizations christiane is connected with. She doesn’t hide it. Please take a more serious look at what christine is saying and not saying. Just accusing her of “prosperity preaching” is minuscule in the big picture.

Pray against the Spirit of greed in our nation and around the world, it's the real source/spirit behind all that's going around the world & its head needs to be cut off. Woe to those who say evil is good & good is evil, as we are saying & were seeing is the real pandemic all around. Several years ago now Holy Spirit removed me from listening to all these mega (Pastors, ministries) & their books too. I didn't realized it @ the time. But I want to hear Holy Spirit of God than these pple. Now it's truly full exposure time of so many evil, nefarious things/behaviors/sins going on. Nothing is hidden that wont be exposed by HIS powerful Light. We are there!! Those who absolutely refused to repent are all the ones being exposed right now these last 3 years especially. I'm so sorry & FATHER GOD will protect, provide & bring great justification for you & your family. Blessings and Shalom to you both ladies!!

Good for you Carey...This is a wake up reality call that we need to know and understand.. The enemy has wolves in sheep clothing ..so called well known, A listers ..standing at podiums, singing and or speaking .. center stage in the Christian community. God Reigns Supreme.. be of good cheer.. He will not be mocked. .The so called mighty fall. In His Kingdom, an Infant born in a stable became our savior. A shepherd boy became a king...He does an awesome job representing the so called commoners.. We all must give an account one day. He will vindicate you and His other wounded sheep. That's a promise.. Keep standing sister.

Who was it, exactly, who coined the phrase, "wolves in sheep's clothing"? Was He being unduly negative, when positivity is so much more _attractive_ and desirable? Or did He know what He was talking about? Then I will not listen to these people who insist that there are no wolves, just bonafide brothers and sisters in Christ, whom we are required to believe mean well. There are more wolves than ever, with more nefarious intentions than ever before. We have to forgive them, but that does not mean excusing them, or saying no harm done. We have to not allow the sin to become the new standard, because if our God is real, the standard has not changed.

Julie, I know this is 1 year old and this story deserves a follow up at some point. BUT all plagiarism, copyright infringement, violations of intellectual property is STEALING. Substantiating the action of this type of stealing is simply go to the written record which Carey did. This is deliberate by the one who did the act and of course then you have an entire apparatus of publishing that is also complicit and knows they are on the hook. Good work.
@jeremiahchapman513

Julie - have you already completed an investigation into the whole industry of Christian book publishing and speedily formulating high unit counts? Similar to your work on the worship music charts and live sing payouts. I had a coworker who worked with folks at Multnomah under Random House once explain that even the “this book is great” blurbs at the front of each book are collected by influential voices before a final draft is ever ready to read. They are given the general idea of the topic and either character bios or their personal relationship with the author (as a fellow speaker, pastor, professor), but the endorsement is worded as if specifically for the book. I also knew a couple “ghost writers” in the way mentioned here… very common. Largely because the author’s name and representation of the topic is of the foremost concern and they “don’t have the time” to actually write a full book again once their name gets out. The book becomes more of a press piece to “warm the audience” for the larger product build… conferences and speaking events. Similar to how musicians don’t make much of anything off album or song sales, their individual income comes from their concert tours and merch sales. So, the plagiarism is almost the least of our worries as Christians… why do we even need to use a clearly “culture-honoring, not God-honoring” marketing systems to get the message of truth out? “The ends justify the means” is a verse in Notinthebiblemiah 15:87 … so I could be out of line 😂

The plagiarism probably didn't cost her a penny; whoever wanted to buy her book, and could afford to, did. But the loss of money is not the main loss when other supposed Christians steal the writing of others. The "bitter" _reality_ of claimed Christians, who could care less, when their sins involve both lying and stealing: since when is lying permissible? Does "have their place in the lake of fire" have no meaning anymore? Then, who died, and made them God, and made His word of no effect? Thieves are supposedly not headed for heaven; does it not matter, as long as the thief is considered a "good conservative"? Do sins only matter if they are hot-button political issues? Does it matter when religious leaders appear to have a public form of godliness, but deny the power thereof? Is God even part of our Christianity, anymore? Then we need to get the kind of Christianity that does actually believe the Bible, believe in Jesus, and believe in God, and fear His judgment. Why would we even think that lying politics is what matters, but somehow our God is allowed to become nothing but a shill for those politics? These are the issues from which bitterness proceeds. In order not to be embittered toward God, we have to assure ourselves that God is as He describes Himself in the Bible, and has nothing to do with it.

And the ones using sermons they buy from Salem Radio/Communications, which is likely even more common than buying from Docent. If they just said, "I'm borrowing a sermon I want to share with you, from Bro. so-and-so", it would go a long way toward making borrowing sermons a little more acceptable. It would actually make it honest. But in places where Christianity is new, it is common practice for the uneducated pastors to preach from what they heard, and learned from, on the radio, etc. That is so understandable, and so different from this.
@kimbowers3607

Plagiarism is theft. And writers should have rights for sure. There are at least 2 ministers in Christianity that have encouraged other pastors to use their sermons..especially if they work lay jobs and pastor at the same time. One of those ministers invites ni copyright on his material..his copywrite is the right to copy. He openly shares his material. I greatly respect this position. Its not for everyone..but i greatly respect them both and this position for helping the body of Christ.

The only book you need to read is The Bible. There are far too many celebrity pastors on the circuit, most of which are spreading a fase gospel and other pointless best life now' type self-motivational mush based on personal annecdotal accounts. I think God must be very grieved knowing that his name is being exploited in this way by so many who seek to bring a 'self help' emphasis into their writing, instead of just preaching the Gospel and clarifying the Bible. The Gospel is all we need and that is free of charge.

I think that we can write as a means of communication with others, and not insinuate that we are any particular authorities who must be obeyed. We can give people a heads up, let them know that at least one other shares their concerns, and point them toward Jesus, just as we can in speaking. But you are definitely right that the Bible is the only book that is necessary.

While I do feel for this author, I did notice that she said the Lord told her to be quiet and not to say anything at first, and then she got upset, and then she said the Lord told her to go after the other person in court (even though we're not supposed to sue each other as believers.) But then, she was led to let it go again. It must be a very hard situation. Sounds like some confusion has been a part of the process, and that is a part of being human. Even believers have to deal with our human feelings, or as she called it, our flesh. I'm glad she has found kind support as well as those who love her enough to want to protect her from this stress-filled process.

Any time I hear or see the name Caine, Cain, Kane, McCaine, Cane.....a red flag goes up and I tread carefully. Regarding the offense, I have one advice. I say to everyone who has been offended: take that offense to The Almighty Sovereign Father of us/me/you/we, and be prepared to GIVE IT (more properly, SELL it) to Him. That means, just like in a common transaction, we give up right and title to the value of the offense. This is part of what The Almighty wants when exhorting us to "judge not" (leave it to me). Our EHYEH YHVH King Yeshua Master greatly desires that we transact in this way, for He OWES NO MAN! No debtor is He, amen. He will pay "pressed down, shaken together, and running over". AND, as now the creditor to the 'perpetrator' He will (in His own way, not for us to peer into) exact payment. The exquisiteness of His justice is humbling. It is often(?) a win win, to His Glory all the more. This method is what Paul referred to regarding 'don't take your grievances to the courts of man'. See John 5:22, 5:27, 8:15 and 100 others! ps: this may be copied, taken, and/or used by anyone as long as it glorifies The Almighty, amen

Also wanted to add- it is Christ's command for us to forgive. So we need not attack those who say this is something we should do, they are intenting that we obey Jesus. Is it easy? No. But the Christian life isn't easy. It's the narrow path that few find and few stay on.

Our Judeo Christian privilege of suing for wrongdoing is absolutely wonderful. You’ve got to hit somebody in the pocketbook!
