Really think you gloss over the pitfalls of traditional single player games. Gamers just don't like having to buy a new game every 20 - 30 hours. The poor completion rates, the lack of gameplay innovation, the poorly written stories, and high cost just make Live Service / GAAS an intrinsically better value. That's not even to mention that the most social animal on earth (homo sapiens) innately prefer playing with others more than playing alone.

For sure! Single player games definitely come with their own challenges and problems! Everyone is looking for different things in gaming, but I think something we are all looking for regardless of other preferences is that we want the game to be fun. The current trend of bland live service games chasing trends that have already been done while not being particularly fun could just as easily be said about many single player games. And I think you hit the nail on the head, the cost of games has made companies look for some way to keep cost manageable, meaning a live service game where they continue to sell the user things and take less risks makes sense. All of that so say, I think the issue is more about wanting games, regardless of whether they are live service or single player, to be fun and seeing many games missing that mark.
