I think auto gain is a great feature too. I'm not too lazy to learn how to set gain, I just have no meters on any of my devices or and I cant see within Zoom Meetings or Camtasia what it actually is. Auto gain, just gets rid of one more variable to mess up. Was actually going to get the Motu 2 to replace my Steinburg simply for the LED Meters on it.

I have been using this wonderful interface for a month now. I have to admit the design of EVO4 screams that they don't really like "physical knobs" in general. (e.g. having only one knob, smart gain, software controls, and the elimination of the need to set the knob while switching between the headphones and the monitors, etc.) I also dropped it by accident from a height of 50cm and the knob detached and also the lid halfly opened. Fortunately nothing got broken but I suggest you handle this little toy with delicacy esp. when everyone is complaining about the plastic.

Great review. I've been looking for a budget audio solution for around $100 for streaming, because frankly the GoXLR Mini at $250 is way too much for entry level, and I don't know enough about interfaces and mixer to know what's going to be good for a beginner like me. You set it up nicely and explained it well enough I feel I learned some thanks for the review!
@KryssN14 жыл бұрын
Really great budget option for starting out at decent level would be Behringer UMC202HD / 204HD (if you need MIDI I/O for keyboard/instruments), ultra low noise and great sounding. Other options Audient, Native Instruments Komplete Audio 1 and 2, Mackie Artist and Producer, PreSonus Audiobox iTWO, M-Audio AIR 192/4 and 192/6, Focusrite 2i2, (I don't recommend Steinberg at this price point, issues with Win10 and only low noise not ultra low noise, even though their sound quality is on pair with Audient). Audient EVO is really great option for both microphone ultra low noise, great RreAmp/ADC quality and Headphone DAC/AMP quality at this price point. You will be able to drive any microphone and any pair of headphones on this with sufficient quality that you will be happy about it. With Behringer 202HD / 204HD you will be also happy about microphone quality and headphone quality, but it won't be able to drive high impedance headphones properly (like Sennheiser HD650 at 300ohm or Beyerdynamic 880 at 250ohm). For great Audio Interface at this price point, you cannot go wrong with Audient, Native Instrument and Mackie. Then you got Focusrite, PreSonus, M-Audio and Behringer, I don't include Steingberg because of OS and Mic Noise level with Dynamic mic at this price point.

Some are saying it sounds even better than the iD4, which makes sense because it is 4 years newer. I do not think you can go far wrong with either, but I think the auto-gain feature is worth it by itself. That is one thing that can make or break a recording so I see that as worth it alone.

Hey! I'm kinda late to this cause I've been using my apogee duet 2 for years now and I'm quite happy with it. But I wanna get a small interface that I can use when I travel with my MacBook and I'm not able to use my studio and the setup there. I guess what I'm asking is: I loved the tutorial, but you emphasised so much that it would be great for "beginners" but what about someone who just need a small travel friendly interface for producing and recording vocals? I'm so close to buying it, but I just need to be sure it can cover what I need! haha. I also have two more probably dumb rookie questions. 1 (the dumbest one). I see you get a usb c to usb a cable with it, but you can use a usb c to usb c I would assume? haha 2. I've heard that there's no way to play audio back through headphones and monitors simultaniously. Although I don't find myself in the need of that often, do you think it might get annoying? Hope you see this! Great review you got a new sub!

Hello, thank you for this great video 😋. Could you please tell me : Do you think it is a good idea to use it as a preamp between a Telefunken M80SH and a Boss Rc-505 loop station ? The goal is : - Having an easier control of the mic gain, as I have to change it often when I switch from beatbox to singing or recording instruments. - pre-amplify the m80sh, as the gain is a bit weak for the 505 preamps - use a line input of the 505 and save an Xlr input to allow me the use of an ATM250DE to record a didgeridoo (two xlr) Thank youuuuu 😋🙏🏼✌

Honestly I'm not impressed by the Smart Gain feature. I think a good proper display, with a good text and even the production of a good short video would cost less and be more useful. I knew *nothing* about audio a couple of years ago, but gain setting is that hard to learn. But even if you want that, why not do it in software? *Much* cheaper to do, and only a little less usable. I'm also not impressed by their gain stage. Sure it's Audient, it's clean. But 50dB of amplification? Come on. A beginner won't have the knowledge or money to treat his room for a proper condenser usage, so I feel dynamic mics should be the main target of a "beginner interface". And the construction overall. And no mute function for the speakers. Kind of an issue for producers, if they don't use near field monitors easily accessible. But I do love the mic mute function! That's great, I wish my iD4 had that :(

@rars0n5 жыл бұрын
Great review, I mostly agree. I think if you're just trying to get your voice/instrument into the computer as cheaply as possible, this is a decent option, especially for noobs. I sympathize with you on gain setting, a lot of people just plain don't know how to set it properly, or how to position a mic for that matter, and the Smart Gain feature should help with both of those things to the benefit of the sanity of all listeners. However, I suspect that there are some dumdums out there who will use it and, because their setup sucks, they won't like what they hear and will override the gain setting to make it sound "better" anyway. For me, there's a bit I don't like about this: I don't like multi-use knobs, buttons, and meters, and this has all three. If I want to adjust something on channel one, I have to press the channel button first. That's annoying. I can't tell just by looking at it if phantom power is on for channel two, nor can I tell the gain setting. The nice thing about many knobs is that they also function as a value indicator; I can look at the knob and know immediately where it's set. The visual indications on this kinda suck for me. I can't help but keep thinking that the Motu M2 is only $40 more. It doesn't have the problems I mentioned above, plus it has MIDI. If I am going to be adjusting gain, recording different instruments, and using MIDI, the M2 absolutely kills the Evo 4 while still being extremely affordable. This is why I view this more as an interface for novices, one that is just easy to set up and get something into the computer. If you're not going to be futzing around with it much and want to let it set the gain for you, then great! This is definitely for you! But a beefier, more usable interface is not that far away in price if you need a little more. One thing I question about your audio interface reviews, and I'm not trying to be a dick but rather just bringing this up for the sake of accuracy, is whether it's valuable or not to read the latency numbers from within a DAW. I know that sometimes reported latency can vary quite a bit compared to actual latency, and I wonder if latency testing would be more valuable than reading reported numbers. I'm not trying to make your job more difficult, but I do think it would be helpful. More importantly, if reported latency isn't accurate, then maybe it's not worth including in the review. Just a thought. Modern audio interfaces tend to be low enough not to really matter anyway. Thanks again for the awesome review! I was interested in hearing more about this when it was first announced, so I'm glad to see you cover it!

I would suggest Presonus Studio 24c. Cheaper than MOTU by a hair, robust metal chassis and build plus Presonus preamps sound better than MOTU anyday. Bonus: comes with Presonus Studio One 5 artist
@rars0n3 жыл бұрын
@@adityabali1939 It looks like it also comes with a bunch of plugins as well. Seems like a very good option. The thing that I kept hearing about the MOTU preamps is that they're very low-noise. I suppose if you want a preamp that doesn't color the sound at all, then they're not a bad option, but I bet the Presonus pres sound a lot better.
@adityabali19393 жыл бұрын
@@rars0n presonus amps are also ninja quiet. I would go with presonus studio 24c if i was in your position. In EU it costs 145€ compared to motu m2 which is €200+ I’ll still be going ahead with the EVO 4 because I’m a bedroom guitarist and I’m definitely not a singer. I don’t need a mic or anything, just a stereo input for tracking instruments. Also presonus won’t work for me because I use no MIDI devices and Presonus Studio One software is not native yet for Apple M1. In EU the Audient EVO 4 is costing less than €100 and I can save for 1 extra month to get education pricing on logic pro x which is native for Apple M1. So you see, different things for different applications. In the end i think every product is decent and option paralysis will just leave you unhappy (because option paralysis is a derivative of expectation and expectation is the root of sorrow)
