its the 9K you want, SSL9000 series is the one with good mic pres not the 4000 series which I think where standard amek, if you want that the SSL 6 and audiant interfaces have better versions of the Amek or 4K sound, the 4K on the SSL box is just a sim like version..the real deal can handle very hot signals and sound far better.

Hey Bandrew, just wanted to say I bought the SSL based on this video, like 2 years ago, and it's been absolutely fantastic! As you point out, the signal you get is very clean and I've recommended it to a number of people since. The usb/input mix knob is also very handy. I've been using one for a little while, and it runs laps around my previous gen1 Scarlett. The pre amp quality is amazing, the DI guitars sounded terrible and were extremely noisy, but now I can actually use amp sims... and the 4k option is usable in a lot of scenarios, the headphone outputs are clean and much louder (where my Scarlett gen1 was always at almost maximum, this one stays between 1 - 3 with my ash m40x). Knobs are much better, the meters are 1000x better than the halos. USB/input monitoring is a godsend, individual phantom power is also very appreciated. I always held off upgrading because a lot of people say that pre amps and interfaces are 1% of the sound, but goddamn that old ass Scarlett needed to go.

I just purchased the SSL 2 and couldn't be happier with my purchase. The preamps have a little character and I like that. I've gotten mixed reactions from peers but I personally like the sound, and afterall it is MY ears that will be doing the listening and my brain doing the mixing. I am a bit upset however that I chose to buy my LDC based on Sweetwater's suggestion that I would need a Cloudlifter if I purchased the SM7B and due to the gain range of the preamps of THIS unit (I had a Presonus Audiobox USB before) I could've been completely happy with the SM7B. But I wound up with a Warm Audio WA47jr and it has a similarly dark sound. So it's all good...saved a $100 too. I'm not too upset I guess! lol

The mic preamps on the SSL2 are astonishingly amazing! Just did an A/B comparison with the new Audient ID14 MK2 and there is no comparison. The SSL 2+ sounds clearer and beefier and more in your face. Just a totally different tone and character. It also has a more powerful preamp at 62DB VS 58DB on the ID14. The SSL also has a slight bit less noise floor. I had to crank the gain all the way up on the ID14 with my SM7B and still didn’t sound loud enough than at 9 o’clock with the SSL. The SSL also uses Neutrik mic connectors VS Amphenol in the ID14. Not to mention the RCA and Midi connections which the ID14 doesn’t have. You also don’t need the iD mixer software and It’s also cheaper in price. Needless to say, highly disappointed in the new iD14. I wanted to like it and thought Audient would be good since everyone speaks so highly of the preamps which is why I got it but I can’t justify keeping it. The SSL has spoiled me.

Hey man, I'm literally about to get either an SSL 2+ or ID14 Mk2. Mainly doing voice (with SM 58 and 7b), but also some guitar. In many comparative reviews, the ID14 is praised bc of the preamps and *lower* noise floor than the SSL2+. You seem to have a different impression - so which one has a higher sound floor? I'm a beginner, could you perhaps tell me what the differences between the two will mean for me in real life? Also, will I absolutely need the ADAT if I want to record to my recorder or connect a mixer at some later stage? And overall, what would you say is the main pro of the Audient? A few words would be highly appreciated, thanks a lot!

Lol i would definitely get the cloudlifter though lol subscribed
@Hugmir4 жыл бұрын
You might really not need the cloudlifter with this interface, though - especially if you're more on the aggressive side and not whispering quietly at your mic (and SM7B really wouldn't be the mic to go to for whispering, I think). The notion that pushing your gain to the limit introduces additional noise seems to have been debunked a while ago (at least when it comes to most devices).

I know that this may seem a bit stupid. I want a DAC to provide clean conversion of my computer music and test tracks, which is mostly CDs as wav files. Part of this need is for music testing of installed sound systems (have the full NTi-audio test system including Talkbox for the basics). On my desktop, it would be also great to use this and have one big monitor knob rather than holding an up or down volume buttons (which always seem to overshoot a tad). The dual monitoring enables me to switch between monitor speakers and headphones without plugging/unplugging. Even better, because all the inputs and outputs are at the REAR of the unit, I won't have these cables cluttering my desk! Bonus, I have two Sennheiser MKH 416 P48s, so the switchable phantom will simplify recording, when I want to do that. Your review is excellent, detailed and methodical - Illuminati with OCD? Well done.
@hugoclubs96764 жыл бұрын
Hi, Great reviews and love your ending punching in the face :) BUT... I really don't understand why you seem to highly recommend the SSL2+ over the Motu M-series. Your arguments are: - the preamps of 62dB gain range agains MOTU's 60 dB gain range - SMALL DIFFERENCE - EIN of -130.5 VS -129.5 - VERY SMALL DIFFERENCE - Analog 4K switch which is a gimmick and something that can easily be reproduced with plug-ins or doesn't matter at all - AD / DA converters which, based on plenty of reviews don't look that different quality wise in both interfaces (I actually see more people advocating that MOTU converters are MUCH better than SSL's ones) On the other hand, MOTU wins regarding : - Dynamic range outputs (120dB VS 112dB) - Round trip latency (SSL performs really bad when compared to MOTU - based on gearslutz.com tests and testimonies) - Dynamic Range Mic Input (115.5 dB(A) MOTU VS 110.7 dB(A) SSL) - BIG DIFFERENCE - Mic Input impedance (3kOhm VS 1.2 kOhm SSL) - HUGE DIFFERENCE Honestly, what I see here is that SSL surpasses "SLIGHTLY" the MOTU in some aspects, but the MOTU crushes the SSL regarding other features. That's why I really don't understand your conclusion. Would you care to go deeper in your analysis please? I am currently struggling between this 2 interfaces and every single opinion of someone that owns both devices would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@frankymino87734 жыл бұрын
Hey Hugo. Not here to justify any interface but during my research the MOTU has a lot of stability issues. Mainly due to it's drivers if your on PC. Some MOTU's have even been returned due to the led screen not working at all from new. Others have reported dropouts in audio.... again probably due to drivers. Just some food for thought if you're deciding on an interface. I would have liked the MOTU though not convinced from owners. I have placed an order on the SSL 2+ as I am attracted by not only it's pre's but also it's AD converters. Tests reveal they are miles ahead of other interfaces in it's class. Though at the end of the day, you can't go wrong with most interfaces in this price range. Just not the M-Audio. Those pre's have a noise floor that goes through the roof.
@AudioSpaceGeek4 жыл бұрын
@@frankymino8773 You hit on exactly why I have zero interest in MOTU gear. Far too many bad experiences with them over the past twenty years. When they work, they're usually pretty great. Great review! I just got my SSL2. I love it so far. I use an SM7B and agree that the 4k brings that mic to life. I think it is all you need if you work alone or want to make simple vocal, bass, or guitar recordings. I compared it while mixing with the Apollo Twin MKII and honestly didn't notice much of a difference at all given that the AD/DA specs are quite a bit better on the Apollo. So in other words, I think the SSL2/SSL2+ has a good enough AD/DA to mix with as well as make high quality recordings.
@Cdssonyx54 жыл бұрын
do you think it's worth gettin over the Apollo mk2.
@ELEVATETHESKY4 жыл бұрын
@@Cdssonyx5 Hmmm that all depends. SSL2 or 2+: If you like a more modern clean sound with clarity and already have great VSTS to mix with. Also way less expensive Apollo Twin: If you like a warmer sound right out of the gate and love to print your effects right away and also if you like UAD effects. Both do well with AD/DA conversion and sound great for recording or mixing. The Apollo specs with better converter numbers But i honestly didn't notice really any difference when mixing. But as stated up above...when recording, the Apollo is warmer and the SSL2 is more clean. The advantage of clean is you can still make it warm with saturation, compression, or EQ. So what you print is always clean and ready for your sculpting. the advantage of warm is if that is exactly the sound you are going for. You can always EQ it to sound more hifi. i did notice that with the SSL2 I don't really have to low cut my vocals. I use an SM7B and leave it flat. Other mics may vary.

MOTU headphone can only hear either 1/2 or 3/4 at once, not both at the same time. SSL doesn't have loopback. 2i4 got both function.
@MixingGBP4 жыл бұрын
If they all meet your I/O needs, I'd probably go for the SSL due to the reputation of SSL alone. If you done like it, I'd probably go with the Focusrite. I have the 2i4 and made many songs on it. No real complaints about it other than the noisy pres and that it can't support an SM7B mic.

One of the biggest benefits the SSL 2+ has over the Motu M4 right now is that you can actually buy one, I’ve had an M4 on back order for almost 2 months, I’m about to cancel my order and buy the SSL lol

I'm still torn between the SSL2+ and the MOTU M4! Anyone with thoughts outside my own? 😂🤷🏻♂️ **Update** I decided to go with the Motu M4. It's hard to beat the features at that price point. While the SSL2+ i'm sure is amazing, it has some design choices that won't work for me. One simple yet major one is having the headphone inputs in the back of the unit. I don't think you could go wrong with either of these interfaces.

And? I'm curious about your experience because I'm facing the same decision: Motu M2/4 or SSL2+? I use a Mac with Logic and Cubase and tons of VST's (Arturia and Native Instruments, mainly). I read about some stability issues, hence my question. Thank you in advance for sharing your findings.
@RogerSartet0074 жыл бұрын
@God Loves You I ordered neither of them actually. I'm in Belgium and apparently the Motu is kind of hard to get hold of for the moment (out of stock in most European online stores). I reviewed my options and decided to spend a little more and went for the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen. The people from Thomann, Germany (which is a very reliable store) drew me over the line actually. We had a phone call and they assured me that if the Focusrite doesn't meet my expectations, I can swap it for the Motu, when it's back in stock. This sounded like a fair deal to me and so now I'm impatiently waiting for it to arrive... .:-) Cheers, Gert

The problem that PCM is not active all the time. I had make an working around. But after all that 4k button with my neumann ksm 105 black made my recordings sounded nicer. The detail it gives sounded natural and even I mix on it is much easier to mix.

Hi! The 4K button is worth all the money and makes this interface sound like a beast. I mention that for two weeks I have SSL2 + and it sounds better compared to Audient ID22 that I have been using for 4 years. Let's see how SSL2 + behaves over time !!!

SSL 2+ is the best product with 2 instrument inputs and 2 headphone outputs. And these other features. I prefer the SSL 2 because I dont need 2 outputs. I would have bought an Audient interface but the Evo8 isnt on the market. I could have bought an Apogee One but I didn't find anyone using the Apogee One with Windows 10. So I was thinking maybe it will not work well. I am using a Daw (FL Studio) and I want record an electric guitar and a mic.
@Bojitoooo3 жыл бұрын
I have to admit that I'm really seduced by this SSL2+. Seems to be very qualitative in terms of build and sound. I was surprised that the fact that the interface didn't have a Mute button and/or a Mono switch didn't come in the Cons section. For mixing, it is a bummer. The other thing I'm really disappointed about is that we can't switch between Headphone output and Monitor output. For mixing application, this is unproductive since we have to dial between the twos all the time. If SSL added these options, they would have the best audio interface at this price range ! I'm still gonna try it since it sounds super amazing and very faithfull to whatever's plugged in. Thanks for the review !

This was a really well thought out/put together interface....I wouldn't expect anything less from SSL tho!!!
