Your reviews are brilliant! I like the fact you stick with a standardized format, so it enables comparisons between mics even in different videos. Plus your attitude is really warm and friendly, which goes a long way to making these videos watchable - just now I didn’t even finish watching a video by another youtuber about audio quality in videos. Ironically it was pretty quiet and not so easy to hear but when commenters pointed this out, even respectfully, the video maker started swearing at them and replying arrogantly that his audio quality couldn’t be bad, it must be our fault!!

I bought ATR55 (which is the same microphone) many years ago because AudioTechnica brand. It was not great from the beginning, so I opened it and found that it contains a couple of electret 10mm capsules and a 3-transistor amplifier. Looking at it, I think that it might be a chinese clone (have not seen any true one, though). I captured the schematics and found that probably it was designed incorrectly. In "normal" mode, a simple front capsule is driving the output, so the sensitivity is around -42dBv/Pa, not different from regular $2 mic. In tele mode, the amplifier adds about 20dB gain and the output of front mic and the back mic (at the end of interference tube) are added anti-phase to increase directivity, but schematics does not look professional. The frequency response is suppressed below ~400Hz (?) and above 2.5kHz (?), probably with intent to highlight the remote speech (?). That is why it does not sound "rich" as in review. A replacement of 3 capacitors to make the design a bit reasonable improved the frequency range to normal 50-15000Hz, and 100-6000Hz (in tele mode - this is what I think it should be). My mic did not have too much noise, but in general preamps running from 1.5V battery would not have good dynamic range which is needed in windy conditions. Overall, I am not sure if this $99 mic is original as it uses extremely cheap components. It certainly not worth its price and probably should sell for $10-15. BTW, telemics cannot be tested at distances of less than few feet, and they all sound much worse than lapel mic attached to the speaker.

I am phlabbergasted! Audio-Technica is a good, reputable brand (or so I thought). And thomann.de is selling this model! (At about $110). And customers are giving it an average rating of four stars out of five! (Can you believe it?) And that in spite of the fact that thomann provides audio samples!! (And yes, they do sound crappy!) Well, I'm relieved to see that the similarly priced T.Bone EM 9900 (Thomann’s “house brand”) does at least sell a little better, and none of them sell anywhere near as well as the four bestsellers in the shotgun department: the Sennheiser MKE 600, the Sennheiser ME 66, the Røde NTG2 and the Sennheiser MKH 416.

If anybody is seriously considering a mic like this for filming, just buy a few cheap but decent lav mics. They'll be much better and won't sound almost as bad as your camera's built in microphone. Neewer sells a pack of 3 lav mics for something like $5. No, they're not good, but neither is this thing. There are probably some much better ones that cost $15 each or so. Or stretch your budget and get the AT875R or Rode NTG2. Even a completely average small diaphragm condenser would be better than these fake shotgun mics, which are just some of the cheapest electret capsules put into a long tube made to look like a shotgun mic. Neewer actually sells a pair of small diaphragm mics for around the price of the mic in the review with interchangeable capsules (identical to the iSK Little Gem) and they actually sound pretty good.

@dylanj86765 жыл бұрын
They were thinking they could make a quick buck by rebranding some garbage OEM mic like the Neewer 14" "shotgun" mic.
@JonnyBravo03115 жыл бұрын
@@dylanj8676 the problem with that approach is it damages your overall brand name / image. I understand the markets for the Tonors/Neewers/etc. Those brands are the generic, low-end, barely-get-the-job-done products that are pretty much disposable. AT, on the other hand, produces some pretty decent gear at competitive prices. Example: AT2020, AT2035, AT4040. Their own shotgun mic, the AT875R (about $170) is miles ahead of this awful thing. Seriously, when the best they can come up with for a description of the 6550 on their own website is, "...this shotgun microphone offers intelligible reproduction..." should have been enough of a red flag LOL.
@dylanj86765 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyBravo0311 That's just it. They already have an affordable shotgun mic, and affordable small diaphragm mics, as well as "medium" diaphragm mics. So this mic exists for no reason other than to make a quick buck, and probably push you to buy the AT875R once you realize how bad this mic is. It probably costs them next to nothing for this mic though because it's essentially just the Tonor/Neewer/Phillips/Marantz cheap "shotgun" mic (with quotes because it's not actually a shotgun mic. The capsule is at the end and there isn't a real interference tube). Because it's so cheap for them to get since it's just an OEM mic they can do it for next to nothing, which is why they didn't just make a lower end AT875R or drop the price. Since Neewer and Tonor used to sell this mic for under $30 that should tell everyone just how cheap it is, and hoe ridiculous it is that Audio Technica's MSRP on it is $70.
@Podcastage5 жыл бұрын
Haha! Holy crap. I didn't even read their site, I just pulled the specs. That's hilarious that they describe it that way!!!
@dylanj86765 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure this is just a shitty OEM mic in a shotgun mic style body like that Neewer 14 inch mic (and the Tonor). I wouldn't be surprised if it's the exact same thing. Phillips sold the same mic under a different name. Either way I lost a lot of respect for Audio Technica today. Imagine if Neumann or Schoeps took cheap small diaphragm mics like the MXL 991 (with the harsh stock capsule) and sold it as the KM91 or CMC900 for $400. That's basically what's happening. A well known audio equipment manufacturer is taking something really cheap selling it for like 3x the price.
@danmagoo5 жыл бұрын
Agreed - Yes, "shotgun mic style body" just for show. How can they claim this is cadioid and even supercardioid when, apart from all its other faults, the keyboard noise from BEHIND the mic is so incredibly loud. The switch sure looks like on the Tonor (which I have) but, as Bandrew shows, this one sounds way worse.
@dylanj86765 жыл бұрын
@@danmagoo Yeah, the Tonor one sounds better. It's probably poor QC or Tonor had them made slightly differently (these things are probably manufactured in a state owned factory in China by the ten thousands. Tonor's stuff always seemed a bit better than Neewer's identical looking stuff). Marantz also sells this mic, and they sold it for something ridiculously cheap like $20 on sale. If the Tonor one were still sold I think it'd be a great mic for students or anybody who just needs an improvement over their cameras audio but doesn't need professional quality. But $70 for this thing under the Audio Technica name is a joke.

@@Podcastage They probably could have made a cheaper version (even if it means cheaper materials and a cheaper capsule). Or just made a hyper cardioid version of the AT2021 and marketed it as a "boom mic" (because hey, a hyper cardioid mic can and is often boomed overhead for interior scenes). It wouldn't be a shotgun mic, but it would be much more useable. This mic is already going to be bad outside because it's probably not an actual shotgun mic, and it's not even remotely good sounding.

@@Podcastage , Thanks for saying that - I like the ATR875R also. In the limited times I use a shotgun mic (because, like you, I see no reason to hide the microphone on camera!), I have stuck with the ATR875R because I like its tone.

You, biased? Naaaah! Lol. It sounded A LOT better than that camera's mic you tried. Having a bad day? Don't do critiques on bad days. It makes you look less than objective.

these canon preamps are utterly trash edit: its really the mike itself holly

Yeah Canon's preamps are trash, but you're right...it's the mic. That's why I tried it on so many different devices, to show that it's not just the mic's pres causing the issue. I also verified with other review videos that my mic wasn't faulty, and it really is that noisy. Waste of money!
