Double Exposure for me is a game with a lot of positives (most intriguing plot in the franchise so far, very charming if underdeveloped characters, very endearing animation/writing, and a nice setting) but fumbles a lot when it comes to reaching the finish line. I think Deck Nine has the potential to make a great game if they polish what they did right and correct the mistakes they’ve made along the way. Life is Strange in general is an EXTREMELY flawed series that you appreciate despite what it does wrong and I don’t think this game is that much of a drop in quality to the previous ones despite what many are saying. I have so much nostalgia for Life is Strange 1 and it still has a special place in my heart, but I can’t deny that the many criticisms it has received over the years aren’t valid. Chloé is unlikable, the characters are cliché, the dialogue is bad, the plot does have a mountain of holes (chief among which is the Save Chloe ending) the way sensitive topics are treated is problematic and Mister Jefferson is a pretty bad villain. But I still think the fact that this game, and the franchise in general, is saved by having a vibe that you can’t find anywhere else in gaming. And Double Exposure, despite being a lot more bombastic opinions are saying, hasn’t lost that signature appeal. As long as it doesn’t, the fact that more people with superpowers get introduced, no matter how many, won’t particularly impact the DNA of the series imo. For a while, people used to think that Life is Strange was about the school setting and were shitting violently on LiS2 for making it a road trip where you can’t familiarize yourself with one spot. But as time went on, there was this sudden shift when people accepted that isn’t a vital part of a Life is Strange game. Same thing goes for here. Even if the story introduces more individuals with superpowers and leans into the ethics of what that entails, as long as the conflict relies on interpersonal drama and not on bombastic action scenes where the fate of the world is at stake, it will still be good for me.
@FuzzzyPurplePickle10 сағат бұрын
I agree! I absolutely understand people's frustrations with Double Exposure, because I do think it's very flawed, but I also think it's a shame that the things the game does right haven't really gotten as much attention. I'm totally with you that the vibe of the game still has that special LIS flavour and I'm honestly really excited to see the cast again in the sequel because I found them all very endearing. Hopefully they can find a way for the sequel to develop those characters in meaningful ways even with the introduction of more powered people and the exploration of the ethics of powers. I think some seeds for that could be planted already, like Amanda having such firm morals and boundaries around the use of Max's powers, and the ways Safi misused her powers against Gwen and Lucas' son. Those threads have the potential to go further to explore the ethics of powers in a way that's still grounded and I'm interested in seeing that.
@kevinsmith64146 сағат бұрын
I think this is people's frustration. The game looks very good and the animations are great but it feels like the time was dedicated to that rather than the story and the choices, and that's the real heart of the game.
@H3rmon8616 сағат бұрын
@@kevinsmith6414My point wasn’t that the game only looks good but is horrible in every other department. I was saying that the story has a lot of untapped potential and the writing has a lot of great moments that aren’t fully capitalized. Chapter 2/3 and even 4 are really engrossing but that’s 5 where it becomes more iffy. It just felt like too much was solved too quickly and should’ve been more spread out throughout the game. The characterization is also the strongest personally I’ve seen in the series (I like hearing those characters interact and hanging out with each other) but the big problem is they are very underdeveloped. Every characters struggles is only alluded but never really that much explored like Chloe was for example. But I think a lot of ppl don’t really want to see that because a lot of media discussion nowadays has to be either the writing is absolutely Peak or it’s garbage with no redeeming qualities. I think, in this situation, there’s some nuance to have. EDIT: Oh and my point was also about the fact that I find it so weird to see the criticism levied at this game considering that we’re Life is strange fans and that series is known to have a lot of problems in their story department. I always thought the assumption in the fandom was that we knew the game were far from perfect but we didn’t care because what they offered was special enough to overlook some of the incredibly cringe inducing writing choices lol.
@FuzzzyPurplePickle4 сағат бұрын
@@kevinsmith6414 I get being frustrated that the writing was a letdown when it's the most important element, but I don't think the reason it falls short is because they dedicated time to other things. Stuff like the acting, environments, animation etc is handled by different people than the writing so I don't think there's any reason to conclude that the writing was a lower priority.

@H3rmon861 I wasn't disagreeing with you, I agree that a lot of parts of the game weren't developed and explored. Stories and character development started then just randomly stopped like Alderman. Those are the things that make these games special as that's what makes it YOUR game and experience. I hate that they describe Max's choices as 'villainous'. Let's be honest, they mean saving Chloe. I could understand a game where Safi uses her powers to manipulate things to how she wants and Max trying to undo it and characters 'fighting' in that regard but it's the phrase villainous. That's what scares me with how D9 view this franchise. There's no good or evil. Everyone's broken remember?

@ViperPilot16 wow that's one way to start a reply. You stay classy. Frank was hardly a great guy, BTS makes him a lot more likeable. @ViperPilot16 my original post was criticising the word Villainous. That's a very deliberately chosen word. Not selfish or something like that. Villainous is a strong way to view decisions from LIS1 and it feels like the final decision is what they are talking about. Of course there are other tough decisions but not many you'd consider makes Max a villain. The way they handle chloe isn't great but that's way down the list of things D9 have done wrong with this game and the franchise since taking control.

I always had a feeling this kind of thing was gonna happen eventually. I don’t know if it’ll be a full on Avengers game as it is about finding why the powers happen. So they’ll bring characters back to look at why they’re given them. I believe it’ll have something to do with the afterlife and spirits. Rachel had a sort of power in Before the storm when she sped up the wind possibly given by Chloe’s dad being his spirit was the crow. Chloe’s dad said “you have a friend that needs you” and in the afterlife he knew about Rachel’s mom so he gave her the power of wind and caused the wildfire. It invoked a lot of emotion on Rachel and pushed her to find truth. The powers are given to find truth and justice. Rachel gave Max the time traveling power to find truth about her death. Then Alex was given her power around the time her father died possibly in the mine and he gave Alex the power for truth. The powers are made to find truth so I think there is something big coming like the villains of every game are connected in some way.

@MrCemicalX9 сағат бұрын
It felt like Double Exposure was trying to do a lot of things together but then they settled for leaving certain stuff open for the future to explore and try to consolidate the story progress here. I suspect they were also torn between having their own story and this being a sequel, there may have been a point during developement were the story became to convoluted (for me it would certainly explain how the story shifted and had weaker moments towards the two last chapters). So even if they failed to, for example, detail the events happening between the first game and this one regardless of the ending you choose, they had to decide where to focus on and left snippets that come up here and there of Max facing here past actions and her trying to teach Sophi about consequences. I kinda see what they wanted to do here (which I appreciate) but than it feels like this story was made for Max to be a redemtion arc as well and show how much she has grown. Yet, a chapter more for the new characters to interact with them, build relationships and some more time with Sofi would have certainly helped show this process and make choices and consequeces towards the end, I guess, more in dept or have more weight for the player. In that regard leaving certain avenues open they should (imo) focus on solid writing to explore this aveneues in the next interations of the game to deliever on this prospects and build upon a more grounded approach.

I seriously disagree with the idea that Safi "just turns evil." There's precedent in her actions throughout the game for her becoming someone Max wouldn't want to be friends with anymore. What she does to those she precieves as having done her wrong is absolutely *nuclear* revenge, including bringing in Lucas' innocent son into the conflict. And she's arrogant as hell, especially when it comes to her power. It's just that we don't learn about a lot of these actions on her part until late in the game.
@seanred768111 сағат бұрын
The quotes from the interviews sound good and they're saying the right things but it's a very fine line, and based on the mishandling of DE, I'm not confident Deck Nine can produce a game people want if they go in this direction. Regarding Safi and her attitude, I can't help thinking about Chloe and the rumoured dislike of the character behind the scenes. With them both being Max's friend, I almost feel like Deck Nine was trying to draw a parallel between the two, saying 'Safi is what Chloe would be at her most disruptive, but with powers'. I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but if the rumours are true about them not liking Chloe's character, I feel like they may have swapped out Safi for Chloe and made her this villain character if they thought they could get away with it without backlash. Okay,, tin foil hat conspiracy over lol.
