I don't think the main idea of ​​the series was ever about superpowers. It was more about real life, focusing on the characters and their relationships, and examining moral decisions. If they go the MCU route, everything from the storytelling to the target audience of the game could change. What’s bad wanting that? It could be such a interesting story. I mean it’s a fact that there are multiple people in the same LiS universe with super powers. They put them into the same world from the beginning. So it’s realistic for them to one day finding each other. I would be interested in having that. Not only did the game felt anti-climatic, it made me uninterested as to where the series is going from here. In the first game, the powers were a good gimmick to get players interested, but what really hooked them were the characters. Too many characters in DE were simply unnamed and had little thought given to them outside of barking. In LiS, even minor characters had depth because DONTNOD took the time to make them visually interesting and bothered to give them a name. Who is going to be interested in a character named "Goth Girl" who is neither dressed nor acts gothic, let alone given a real name? The named characters were fine, but it felt underwhelming compared to even the first game. LiS is dead, long live Lost Records.

Yeah I noticed that too everyone at Blackwell was someone you could interact with in some way and felt like they had some sort of personality but yeah there were only a handful of students you could interact with in double exposure. Which I do admit made the game more streamlined I guess but I don't think a game like life is strange needs to be streamedlined.

My issue was that the characters did have names but they didn’t actually label them which is extremely bizarre. You only really learn who is who by listening to their conversations and then reading their posts on Crosstalk.

the thing i hated about safi was that if they wanted her to be a villain, they needed to build her up to it. instead, we (from max’s pov) only ever see a good but traumatized person, similar to chloe. even when she’s shot her mom, she’s begging max to kill her. she doesn’t even reach full villain until the very end, the last ~30 mins. it was awful. the whole story was also never posed as a story about powers. they could have done a justice to max’s trauma, and her unlearning her trauma (no matter which ending you chose-bae or bay) through the whole safi ordeal, but we only get a tease of that instead. it was just a mess. it was a great game until maybe the 3rd chapter, and then it just went off the rails.

A socially anxious,insecure teenager gets the chance to rewind time and say all the right things. A little boy who lost his father to racism and police brutality gets the power to move anything at will making him the strongest person in the world. The powers were always about the characters, their weaknesses and how gaining a power to overcome that weakness affects them and the world around them. They mentioned hints of that for Safi who could never be what he mother wanted her to be so she started wishing she were someone else entirely and got the ability to shape shift. But I really hope they lay more of a focus on that again instead of starting to come up with random super powers and hinting at the backstory in a throw away line. The next plot line could be about Safi overcoming her insecurities and the resulting god complex by making her find her identity. Maybe helping Diamond with her powers could help her find out who and what she wants to be.

Here is the thing.....Alex and Steph meeting Max would work. Alex actually has very similar background to Safi as a daughter of immigrants with family trauma. Steph is also impacted by Max's final choice in the first game. They do fit. And really what if Max cannot help heal Safi's trauma and needs Alex's life experience and powers to do so?

The thing about the powers that seems to be missing in DE is that the "superpower" is the character's weakness, not strength. It causes them all kinds of problems and they don't know how to control or use it and the story is in a large part learning how to accept and use that power responsibly - i.e. learning how to accept yourself for who you are and the things about you that make you different are what make you great.

LIS is all about coming of age, consequences and relatable storytelling, the powers should never be the priority. It's about the story, the characters and the choices. If they go down some MCU route, they will lose what made the original so beautiful and fun. When I first watched Life is Strange, I was a sophomore my high school year, I shared it with my friend and would catch Jack post his playthrough. Early in college my friend who lived on the West coast would share how much she loved it. There's something so intimate and personal about Life is Strange. About Max. This intensely niche and hipster vibe that is so special and it's only amplified because it's so "small town". You can't get that the moment you make it a "superhero franchise" The point was always a fleshed out story with a core mystery. Nothing will ever top finding out about Jefferson and having the make that Chloe/Arcadia Bay choice.

It's pretty clear where the story is going in the continuation, given we have one big dangling plot thread that started it all. *Spoilers Max shooting Safi is to stop somethings shes going to do in the future, this is the truth of whatever the next story is. Safi goes so far off the rails that Max has to kill her and erase the timeline.

im definitely iffy about the mcu concept, i am not optimistic in anyway about it but i do think there are ways to properly execute it. i think the biggest issue about it is that to me atleast lis has never been about far fetched powers, the powers need to be believable and integrated in a way that is relatable and seemless, im not really sure how to word it properly but to me the reason that lis 2 doesnt work is because the power is not integrated well into the story, it was too far fetched for me and just felt too out there, thats my biggest fear for this hero multiverse idea is that it will repeat the mistakes the second game made with the powers

I love the Life is Strange franchise, but I love it a lot in the same way that you do, differing in the sense that I feel the same way you do about Max Caufield, except I'm all about Chloe Price. If they did a superhero story, I think the only way I would want to experience that, would be through the eyes of Chloe. That said, if this game is any indication of how much attention to detail they're going to be putting into these games going forward, I think we, as fans - are all in for a big disappointment. Unless they're gonna release the next part as DLC, I don't see Deck/Square leaving us hanging on providing us answers for another three years as a good thing. Say what you will about any other life is strange game, at least they were all encompassing, full stories. Including #2. Double exposure left me with an empty, unfinished feeling, but they could correct that with a DLC. But dunno. Maybe I'm subconsciously feeling that way because We didn't get Chloe in this one.

I always saw the powers more like: How would a normal human being continue with their day to day life? Like this made those games distinct from your average Marvel Hero stuff. Like if someone in our society had those powers I doubt they would run out in the world and scream it from the rooftops and Safi wants to go that way which should show that she is in the wrong here. Michel Koch already said. Life is Strange NEVER was about superpowers. Life is Strange ALWAYS was about good stories being told and the powers were just a tool for the story being delivered. Deck Nine just didn't understand this yet. DE doesn't have a good story, DE doesn't even deliver this mediocre story with average storytelling techniques. Looks like a kid wrote the game Loretta was useless. Reggie was a prototype to have the mental illness subject being approached but a pathetic way. Alderman being erased of existence was concluded by a text message and never being approached before that. Safi's genius plan of exposing the truth about Lucas's book is childish, we're in 2024, so post it on social media and get global visibility instead of getting the help of astrophysics to push three buttons of a projector. And the worst of anything else: Your choices don't matter at all. Just change three or four lines of dialogue. And that's it. Any Visual Novel developed by one guy on Steam has more ramifications on the narrative than DE.

I like the concept of Safi and Max teaming up and bringing all people who has powers together. But I feel like this should be like the final game in the series type thing. Either final game or two Part game. This is too early to even think or attempt it. Could have Alex, Sean and Daniel join with Max or Safi but they need to introduce more characters with powers. More unique powers, then leading up to a choice Safi manipulating them to her evil plan or them joining Max and trying to reveal powers do exist in the world.

I’m honestly in wait and see mode with this. I think in moderation, it could be fine. For example, I think a game where you play as Safi and solve a mystery while exploring her powers, while also searching for other superpowered people as a B Plot could be really cool if done well. But I can also see them pushing out way too many games (like Marvel does movies) and just going crazy. Def don’t need a game centered around each person with powers (another Max sequel, Alex sequel, Diamond game, Safi game, Daniel game, and whoever else they can dream up). Also don’t want them to give powers to past characters who were never meant to have them to “fill up a roster” (Reggie, Steph, Rachel prequel game a few I can see them retconning to have powers and that would SUCK and completely ruin their character arcs)

For the most part, I agree. Super powers were always a backdrop to the mundane relatability of everyday life and personal self growth. That's what makes the first two games so successful/beloved. Double Exposure focused too much on the superpower aspect -- although I do give it credit for showing how Max is able to stand on her own.

Everyone keeps acting like the plan was to have people flying around the entire game shooting each other with eye lasers. And uh... maybe? I'd say we don't know. But the impression I got was that a group of people would probably be led down a "bad path" by Safi, and then it would be up to Max and her "normie squad" to try to convince that group of people to choose the "good path." The playable character would likely be one of the newbies rather than Max. That was my thought at least. But they could be planning on doing anything. To your point that they'd have to accommodate every possible ending from LiS2... what if they just say that Max combined all convergent timelines? What if both Chloe AND Arcadia Bay are back in the next game?

i think bringing the old characters back could be good, if they do it right. and i think the day to day life stuff, it could be the characters going around to different towns to find out whats going on and help the people there. sort of like how early supernatural was. and supernatural, the tv show, in the first few seasons, there were characters with powers, even the bros had powers at points, but we still saw the day to day life of the bros, and if life is strange goes the route more so like supernatural, maybe it could work.

NO! NEIN! NYET! I loved the original LiS story. It inspired me to write not only fanfiction but an original teen romance story. Max Caulfield is not "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "Chronowoman". Writers know when a story ends. Game developers and Movie producers don't. As for Deck Nine...

Double exposure was so frustrating because they had great characters overall and I think an “MCU story base could have worked if it felt organic. It felt like they had a story planned out and then at the last minute they saw a way to make more money off of max’s character. Episode 1-3 were great and episode 4 was okay. 5 was messy and sloppy. It doesn’t feel organic I don’t want to see max as a super hero. I think they should have gone with Daniel if they wanted to go hey we’ve got gifts let’s form a team it makes sense for his character. I want over all chill gameplay with max with some deep issues that’s we have to figure out keep it small time but dark.

Why? That’s how story works. It evolves. And always having a new story with a new superpower is getting boring. I think it could be sooo good to play a group in the next game and this group is full of all the characters we know have powers. Who knows maybe Alex or Daniel don’t like that at first but Safi is the first villain with superpower and she could try to manipulate them or even harm or threat them. And the ending would be that max is trying to crush safis plan and all of them are realizing that abusing their powers wouldn’t be right. Why is everyone assuming avengers or superhero’s? They could turn this so deep and interesting. Now that Safi knows that she’s not alone it makes sense for her character to look after more of her. Why are people so pressed and can’t like anything 🙄 I’m really annoyed cause this IS such a good story??? Have your opinion but now it feels like everyone is copying one another just because criticism is the first thing people do. The arguments from the videos I’ve seen even this one just don’t make sense. They’re talking but saying nothing. There’s no big reason to hate on this change. Just bc people wanted something different doesn’t mean that Life works that way. Life is Strange was always hard and painful with deaths and losses. I loved Chloe and max together but gosh it’s still realistic to break up especially when u imagine how fucked up their relationship was. We experienced ONE week of their life in the first game. Ofc everything was special there. That’s not how life works. Max ghosted Chloe for years, people forget that 😅 she still has reasons for distance. Plus this is Life is STRANGE. Not everything has to make sense and that’s what these games are about.

This isnt a good story at all. A good story would be if double exposure using both living/dead timelines for safi AND Chloe because then we can stop the bullshittry of "cannonending" and finish the Max/Chloe saga. D9 had SO many ways of handling the evolving LIS story but they FORCED INBETWEEN games that Chloe has to go. So a big part of the people that loved Max/Chloe hates DE. They had the chance of making the ending of DE make it so arcadia bay isnt destroyed and Chloe is alive. That would be a fking ending. Chloe in the playthough where is alive points out how much she wanted to get out of arcadia bay but now she wishes she could be back. Great what a fking plan to make the story between Chloe and max end but with i dunno i call between Max and Chloe after the timelines merge where Chloe tells Max "I havent had a home for years being on the road but with mom(Joyice) now being alive i want to see her i want to go home." LIF as so many people pointed out and i will to THE POWERS are not the driving factor behind the reason of the game. Same goes for LIF2. It is Chloes way of acting and Maxs character that drives the game forward. Or Seans constant thought of wanting to make sure that Daniels doesnt go overboard with his powers as he so easy can do with some choices. The timetravel part acts ONLY as a way to move forward because Chloe most of the time SETS what needs to be done. So what i and so many other is saying of you go away from the "LIFE" part of the game and changes it to "its all about the powers" then you just have a GENERIC fking "superhero game" Bad vs good. Yes as you said " Life is Strange was always hard and painful with deaths and losses" but with you line of thought you have the next game is a superhero game where the powers drive the story and character close to say example max is that moses dies because thats painful and hard for max. It isnt hard at all . Thats why its bad. The ending in LIF1 sets it self up beyond any game I have ever played because if we choose to sacrifie Chloe we know what happens. WE ALWAYS knew/know what will happen. That ending is hard and painful BECAUSE MAX and the PLAYER know what is going to happen but they cant do anything about. Me peronally i think I have fking ptsd from hearing "GET THAT GUN AWAY FROM ME YOU PYSCHO" and hearing to 2 first bassline of spanish sahara. We ACTUALLY see very raw emotions from max in that ending hding with her head in her knees and how she ricochet when the gun goes of. Same with the teardrops. It feels so very real because it is very much a part of life not the fking superpower. Come on this isnt a good story it changes whole meaning of LIFE , you take the life without powers away. DE needed to have the same thing as LIF SOMETIME IN THE FKING CLASSROOM. This would make the whole ass fking game seem so much more ALIVE because it is a part of Maxes life as a teacher. But there si none. Which as many other points out makes it shallow and empty because DE is the first step on trying a game where the power is the focus not WORLD If D9 does the next LIF game and they go with your thinking of POWERS before LIFE then there wont be a 3. It will kill of the whole series as we know it. Very large rant because alot of vocal people are very much agaisnt the thought of changing the whole foundation the series for something extrmly shallow.

I like how you think!! The fact that she is now a teacher is so incredibly important. An everyday setting like a classroom would have taught us so much about Max and the characters in her class. It could have made players learn about Max's views on photography and about her journey since the first game: they could have let her show things about her travels and photos she took during them for example. Ughhh so much potential...

Square Enix should know better than enayone that the Avenges move would not work. Yeah, jokes aside, I WOULD love watching Alex and Max working together to solve a case. It could bring lots of interesting gameplay features, where you can jump from one character to another during the same scene to try and figure things out while combining their own stregths. Long story short, I'm not opposed, but I'm skeptical.

The idea of a group of power users going different paths in a grounded fashion? Awesome in theory and done well, but I honestly don't think Decknine can handle that. For instance Persona 3, whatever version one plays (OG, Fes, Portable, Reloaded) has that sort of element in it of your protags that have their powers vs. another group that have their own set of powers is fantastic. The ending of DE in itself shows they don't have a clue on the grounded core of LiS or are capable of handling that type of story. Like LiS's core is about the people put in situations with powers that reflect aspects of themselves + their connections with those around them. Not X-men type battles. Its like if Marvel's Daredevil suddenly started having galactic battles vs. street level conflict. Matt Murdock has "powers" but they're not flashy or spectacles, the core of that show is rooted in the grounded element; Punisher same kind of thing only he's an ex-soldier with access to an armory; Jessica Jones has her strength & invulnerability but that isn't the focus of the show; etc. Storm rolling in with her large scale supernatural powers would completely take away from that grounded-ness. Same idea applied to LiS. I like the idea of crossing characters over and as you sort of mentioned there's actual connections to tie some of them together. Alex knows Steph who knows Chloe who knows Max; or Alex knows Steph who was at Arcadia Bay for a time and according to the ending of DE is where Max is heading next. Here's the thing though, while I cautiously trust Decknine with Alex and Steph cause they're a) Decknine characters and b) femme cashmere queer preference of Decknine's; after what they did to Max and Chloe = keep them all the way away from Daniel and Sean. I shutter at what they'd do to their characters given the trashfire that is DE that shows they and DontNod are NOT on the same page; even clashing against each other's approaches. Decknine has actively ruined the idea of crossover which I actually like and iirc has happened in terms of cameos via Pricefield and Chenrich being in the same place during a chapter of the comics (might be misremembering since I've read the original run and Forget-Me-Not so might be blending there). Its hard for me to even believe in Decknine and their current narrative team to even handle their own original characters; like I wouldn't at all be shocked if Alex and Steph broke up to enable Max x Alex. Cause Decknine is all about the romance vs. actual story & characters.

Totally agree with you. I wouldn't be enthusiastic about it. The magic of Life is Strange, what I also genuinely did feel during the first three episodes of Double Exposure, is that it is all about characters and navigating a normal world with everyday people, figuring them out, making decisions, and alongside that is the suspense of having to solve a problem or mystery which happens to involve the protagonist's powers. I loved roaming around the beautifully designed environment in this new game and the setting of a university lent itself so well for discovering a community. The look of this game is perfect in my opinion, they really need to keep this, and I did really love Max (and being able to choose outfits multiple times? Freaking loved that). Some of the characters I also enjoyed but I would have loved (many) more moments between characters (I mean, who is Amanda really? And I didn't like Safi because we have so little meaningful interaction with her and her development is unconvincing). What could those normal moments, those interactions look like? I would for instance have loved to see Max teaching a class. The fact that she is now a teacher and not a student anymore is so incredibly important. It would have allowed players to learn something about her views on photography, and they could have let her show parts of her travels and photographs she took during them so players could get to know more about her journey since the first game. All the while we could have learned more about some of the characters (Reggie, Loretta, Diamond) and have them interact with Max. How cool would that have been? Now you get a quick motel room loop that hints towards her past... felt rushed honestly. Anyways, If everything would be about superpowers, if they would overpower (lol) the narrative, that would totally take away from the atmosphere of the game, and it wouldn't appeal to me as much anymore. I would even have loved the game if Max would not have had any powers, although I must say that the new manifestation of Max's power and the gameplay that came with it were actually enjoyable.

It's funny to me that fans of the first Life is Strange really wanted a sequel with Max and Chloe, and now that they have it, they’re upset about it. But I don’t blame them-this wouldn’t have happened if it had been made by the original writers of Life is Strange. This is why I liked Michel Koch’s idea of making this franchise an anthology for different stories; at least they respected the endings of the first life is strange in Life is strange 2. For me It's better for a story to end than be ruined I hope this is actually a lesson for some fans

Maybe even with his Steph they shouldn’t really have to do the whole break up thing like they did in Double exposure. Have Steph come with Alex if you chose to have her go with Alex. I know it’s a little far fetched just like the idea of it.

I love your passion for this series but I feel your prematurely jumping to conclusions. 1) Overal, apart from some gripes/disagreements with the game, I really liked DE. It does feel "incomplete". I took the "Max will be back" as an acknowledgement that there are still threads that aren't fully resolved, that will be furthered if D9 gets the opportunity to make more games, NOT as "ZomG, We's The McU now!!1!" 2) I get Safi took a sharp turn at the end (I disliked it too) BUT, I never got the feeling she's the big bad now, scouting for a merry band of villains. She now knows there's powered people out there and wants to find them. She's afraid she (and the people she finds, I guess) are monsters instead of Divine, (my Max reassured her she isn't and agreed to "teach her"). You CAN make a great LiS game guiding Safi through this journey of discovery. Make it about a mystery (why are we/ how are we / does it mean anything/ is there a reason..all possibilities) then you see the personal stories of the people you meet. So it stays that grounded LiS story where your decisions and realtionships help dictate how these people come to terms with their powers and the dangers that come with them. I want WAY more LiS, but I'm over new games with new people that aren't in some way all tied together. Not in a big bombastic, blockbuster way, but furthering the LiS mythos through connected, grounded personal stories.

Life is Strange has never been about the powers. It has always been about the characters and their journey. The powers are merely tools that enhance and facilitate said journey. Narrative tools that supplement the story. The games would still work without the powers but not without the characters. -Take away Max's rewind power, and you don't have to change too much to the story to make it work, but take away Max, and it falls apart. Life is Strange is its characters, not its powers. -It isn't InFamous. Which is diametrically opposite. Take away InFamous's characters and the story can still work; take away the powers and it breaks down completely.

I've been joking about this idea for a while, so I'm actually in favor of it. Deck Nine has conditioned fans into thinking LiS is some sort of dating sim, but I think people have forgotten that the impetus of Life is Strange 1 was an apocalyptic event. Now, I'm not saying they need capes or anything, but Max's powers had a greater meaning. The games have gotten away from that.
