I think it’s because despite the seeding, a lot of people didn’t believe the Spurs were legit title favorites since the big 3 were older at that point and there were questions on if their bodies could keep up with a deep playoff run. Which turned out to be the case since Duncan was dealing with bone in bone knee arthritis and Ginobili had an injured arm and missed the first game of the playoffs. Z-Bo played out of his mind especially in the fourth quarter of game 5, but you could tell Duncan had lost a step and wasn’t even a double double guy anymore. He did go on to drop the weight after the 2012 season and got his mobility back.

Zbo did work in M-Town. He had the city on lock and took the Grizz to like 7 years of playoffs in a row, which at the time was more than any team in the league. Hopefully, Ja can duplicate that success. Go Grizz!

Grizzlies upsetting the older, tired, #1 seed Spurs, directly led to the time management we see today. Everyone thought the Spurs run was over, but 2 years later, by 2013, they were resting their stars in the middle of the season to be ready for deep playoff runs, picking up league fines for doing so, getting to the NBA Finals, validating the cheat code. Other teams had to adopt and match the tactic for their stars to be rested, too.
