Tommy Vietor and Ben Rhodes discuss the success of far-right parties in the European Parliamentary elections and debate whether French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for snap elections in France is bold or disastrous. Then they talk about British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s shocking decision to skip a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the latest developments out of Israel and Gaza, including ceasefire negotiations, Benny Gantz leaving Netanyahu’s war cabinet, and the ethics of an Israeli hostage rescue in Gaza that resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties. They also walk through the horrific state of affairs in the civil war in Sudan, a foreign election interference scandal rocking Canada, a Chinese waterfall getting a little help from the government, and why Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville is still very, very dumb. Then Ben interviews Dr. Rosa Balfour, the Director of Carnegie Europe, about the broader implications of the European Parliamentary election results on issues like climate change.

As a French and American dual national, I would respond a few points 1. Ben said that Europe needs leadership, but as Tommy said, Macron is "full of himself." Every time Macron goes to play prima donna on the international stage as the European "leader," the French get more exasperated with him. Europe needs leadership, but the French hate watching him "lead." There is a feeling that he is not interested in the problems of your average French person and only really wants to promote what's good for corporations and the rich. Nearly all of his support is just to vote against Le Pen, not in support of him. To be fair, he presents himself as a pedantic turd who understands your woes better than you. I hate having to vote for him. 2. Turnout for European elections is always super low in France. The French just dont feel the effects directly enough. I think Macron is trying to force people to come out because the average French person doesn't care about fascists in European parliament, but they do in the French govt. 3. We should not underestimate how much Le Pen has been able to rebrand her fascist party by changing the name and putting Jordan in place as figurehead. It gives people who grew up eschewing the blatant rascism of Le Pen the "permission" they want to vote for them. It's super troubling.

Also, it's probably worth noting whenever we speak about Le Pen that her campaign has been funded nearly entirely by Russian banks. She was unable to run before a trip to see Putin. People should not forget this!!!

As a 'resettled' Dutch person in the UK, your comments resonate with me. A few months ago I saw Dutch parliament elections give a huge vote to Geert Wilders. Our Parliament is PR and relies on consensus. But oh wait political outsider Dick Schoof, who is not affiliated to any party, would become prime minister of the new government. What the f??

As an ex Brit, I was going to make your point #2. People in Europe treat the EU elections the way Americans treat school board elections. Protest parties tend to do very well because they can mobilize a relatively small number of people to go vote. An example is that Nigel Farages party often won the EU elections in the UK, but has never won even one seat in parliament The EU parliament is not the European version of congress. It has far less power or influence. Most of the decisions are made by collective agreement between the governments of the member states

Sorry but what the actual F. I was going to hold forth about Dutch liberal values and norms, but Wilders after months of deliberation, as happens in a normal way of events to achieve a 'cabinet', went to appoint a non-elected, 'non-affiliated' PM, not voted for. Sheesh. In the mean time I live in the UK (and I live here as a 'resettled' EU citizen, remember), things are looking good. Labour will get in and will in time restore links with the EU. I don't know how long it will take, but in this short time, get Tories out, and I'm ridin' with Biden

Special forces operations occur overwhelmingly at night for both tactical reasons (night vision advantages) and to reduce collateral damage. "We own the night" is a common slogan for many special forces operating companies. So why did this take place during the day? Why would you give your enemy an advantage (daylight) when you don't have to? We'll never have a definitive answer, but situations like these support a growing belief that Israel is designing its operations to maximize collateral damage and civilian death. These beliefs are of course aided by the statements from leaders within the Israeli government. I'm also quite disturbed by reports that this raid used an aid truck and was launched from the humanitarian pier that we built. Doesn't this put all other aid workers at risk of harm? Not to mention the criminality of using aid as a cover for military operations. The whole thing is quite disturbing.
@benzolobster
@benzolobster 5 күн бұрын
Also it's not even paranoid to think endangering aid workers is entirely deliberate considering Israel's endless attempts to disrupt aid delivery and distribution. What the Biden admin was even thinking directly involving US forces in any of this debacle is just absolutely baffling.

So apparently the IDF killed almost 300 Palestinians, 3 of their own hostages, and maybe friendly fired their own unit commander to death, all just to free 4 hostages. Understand the Israeli military celebrating this (they desperately need the win), but seeing the US defense establishment hailing this as a huge success was genuinely disturbing. IDF spokepersons should not be allowed on TV without a notice informing viewers that information could be false or misleading. The spin is absolutely mind blowing, IDF decides to conduct the operation during daylight when a lot more civilians are around, complains that enemy forces attack them from all sides (rather than standing nicely bunched together in one place) and ultimatly turns piece of densely built-in and populated area into rubble causing massive civilian casualties. If you are alien just finding out about this, you would not be questioning who is aggressor here.

In a fair democratic election, I have no problem with right, far-right parties getting votes and seats. I do say fair and democratic though. America is not democratic, and does not have representative voting considering that it can come down to 5 states who decides the presidency. The UK also has a stupid two-party system. These two countries are living in the past. A true democracy will develop and allow for smaller parties to gain support, whether they be left or right or in the centre. But to only have two options in a winner takes all electoral system in 2024 is ridiculous. Society is diverse and the elections should reflect that fairly. Only having two viable parties, like the US and UK is just not representative. Like we see recently people scoffing at republicans voting for trump.....who else can they vote for, the only other guy who has a chance?

Immigration will either be controlled by reasonable people, or it will be controlled by unreasonable people. The majority of the population of any country will not stand for its society being swamped by residents from other countries and clashing cultures. Why hand the unreasonable people a surefire recruiting tool? Why push that majority only pushes them into the arms of people they'd never normally vote for? Instead of allocating negative labels to that majority and associating uncontrolled immigration with virtue, what should really be done is to address the root causes of mass emigration from other countries into the West. Many of those people are fleeing violence and chaos either caused by or egregiously exacerbated by the West pouring weapons into conflict zones and backing coups. Stop doing that. Stop pouring weapons into Israel. Stop pouring weapons into Ukraine. Stop invading and destabilizing other countries.

Concerning the Sunak thing - it's a baffling mistake until you consider the reality that the Tories' singular appeal - the appeal that delivered Brexit in 2016, in fact - is essentially their co-opting of the reformist anti-immigrant, euro-skeptic, xenophobic manifesto of Nigel Farage. So in that context, it seems less a blunder, and more a cynical calculation that Sunak would be better off not being seen in public with European leadership or indeed foreigners, more generally. It's no coincidence, therefore, that Sunak did indeed spend much of the previous few days participating in U.K-specific commemorations, and in defending his decision to leave Normandy early, he repeatedly exclaimed his commitment to honoring BRITISH war heroes and BRITISH sacrifices during BRITISH D-Day commemorations. The same myopia that many traditional Democrats in America have likewise applies to U.K. politics - the conservatives aren't talking to you, or to me, or to the press. They're talking to other conservatives...their constituencies, only. And in their constituencies, the President of France, the Chancellor of Germany, and the President of the United States are not allies...they are opponents of whom to be suspicious and mistrustful. The Tories and the Reformists don't care if we're appalled by their racism...racism is what they're selling, and they're only interested in talking to customers willing to buy it.

Lowering wages, deteriorating services, union busting and mass migration led to Brexit. What if I told you no one cares what any Tory has to say, blue or red, and definitely not a muppet on a barge on the River Thames. The 'Brexiters are racist and stupid' narrative just served to support the Tories and their endless austerity, by turning the middle class against the working class. Ever ask yourself why the working class wanted Brexit? Could it be that mass migration causes a surplus of labour, therefore weakening unions and driving wages down? Employers were always screwing the working classes here (UK) by exploiting poor and desperate people from other places in Europe. No one but the extreme hates mainland Europe or Europeans, the working poor hate the neo-Liberal unelected capitalist cesspit that is the organisation of the European Union.

Alas, I was too optimistic, and hearing them refer to Jordan as a "fascist" not only shows the same condescension they accuse Macron of, but also shows a poor grasp of political and historical knowledge. Which are 2 things that have destroyed the reputation of the media. So peace out.

'Fascism has been on the rise for a while now here in Europe. Immigration, poverty, climate change laws that doesn't help at all. Go after the real climate sinners instead of farmers which is our main source of food. The top of EU is refusing to work with the right at all, keeping them way out of the loop which certainly doesn't help. After the iron curtain fell no one helped the eastern European countries out. No one was willing to give up any of their deals with America or Asia or anything. They build factories there to get cheap labor but the headquarters stayed in the west. So those countries didn't really prosper much. And now everyone under 30 never experienced the Soviet Union but only poverty under a democracy. Status quo or turning right is the only option for them.

@@StratsRUs I don't think the center parties in Europe are right wing. On some issues maybe. Even left wing parties are getting very strict when it comes to immigration laws, cause there is no getting elected at all without being strict on immigration.

To be fair, the salary in the factories of eastern Europe have been shooting up (I'm speaking with insider knowledge of industrial optimisation). Unemployment is just way too low in these zones and it has become difficult to find workers, so much so that the trend is starting to reverse, especially for products that need high quality. That's not to say that these salaries are enough to live well (especially not in today's inflation), but the Eastern European worker is doing much, much better than the western European worker (who is unable to live at a fraction of the level that they saw their father and grandfather live in the same factory... if their factory still exists and hasn't been sent to Hungary or Poland!).

Guys, cricket is played by more people worldwide than baseball. It has 3 forms, Twenty20 (20 over a side), One day (50 overs a side) and Test matches (capped at 5 days). Cricket and Baseball have a common ancestor (rounders). The Twenty20 world cup is the one you are talking about. Twenty20 is played in a Major League in USA. And yes - you are missing out on one of the best games in the world. Australia, India and England are the world powerhouses of cricket.

not a photographer, he contributed to a single article back in 2019 as a freelancer. his involvement is also still disputed as his home was only one of 7 apartments in the building and there are some contradictions such as what floor he lived ok vs what floor the idf is claiming the hostages were located. worth being skeptical as the Israelis are extremely motivated to try to discredit al jazeera's reporting and justify its banning

No blame for Hamas for not accepting the latest ceasefire deal? No discussion on civilians holding Israelis hostage? No accountability for Hamas for the high death count in the rescue operation since they are the ones who fired at the hostages and rescuers? And they kept the hostages in high civilian areas?? First mistake is to include outside Democratic politics and using "inside" language, like it was just like the difference between Center and Middle Democrats. If the party does not support democratic elections, it is not a left or right party according to democratic philosophy, it's next to democratic, not next to democratic parties. Fascism, Democracy, Feudal, Monarchy, Republicans(Well I guess that is a bit unfair, the former Republican party is technically a theocracy of some sort now, just like communism was never really communism, but just this front for diktators.). Second the nazi party was SOCIALIST, it was left wing, until it was no longer a democratic party. All the parties your talking about in Europa is all left wing socialist parties that hate foreigners and I'm not entirely sure any of them has a anti-Democracy part, not like the Republicans does in USA. Your so messed up in your head you are trying to make right wing socialist...
