Love my pokies! I think a lot of bites from pokies are carelessness during feeding (or when they think they're being fed). I've only found them to be shy rather than aggressive. They have a tenancy to check if food, panic, bolt, then freeze in the pokie pose, which I find adorable. Cereal containers are great for pokies because they are tall yet compact, which helps them feel secure.
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 8 ай бұрын
Luckily, there aren't all that many bites reported out there, as I don't think that they are particularly prone to bite. Like you, I've found them to be quite shy! And I have a few of them in cereal boxes as well. :)

Personally i think it’s way more traumatic when people try & try poking at their spider instead of constant contact to move a spider from point A to point B. A catch cup is fast & over before you know it !! 😊

Hey Tom! I love tarantula Cribs. I know they are expensive, but I only have 20 Ts, yes even though 1.5 years ago I told you I wouldn't have more than 7. Lol. I have about 45ish T cribs of all sizes. About 85% of my collection is in them. I also have 26 jumpers, so that's the other half of the spiders I own, and 1 velvet spider, "her" name is Mrs. Velve-deer, after the 80s sitcom Mr. Belvedeer who was a butler. I'm not ready for a Pokie yet. I have a P irminia and was nervous about her rehousing for a couple of months, even though it went smoothly and I did in fact leave the catch cup in the Large T cribs switch, and she came out a couple hours later, and that's when I removed the cup. But I figured if I was nervous about my sun tiger, I am not ready for a pokie. Have a good weekend with your family, hope there's a podcast tomorrow!
@erikdieterle6586
@erikdieterle6586 8 ай бұрын
If you can rehouse an irminia you can rehouse a pokie. But if you don't feel ready that's the important thing. How you feel about doing it. My Pokie siblings were in 32 Oz. Cups and I literally put them in the new enclosure took off the lids, shut the door and walked away. They both came out on their own and it was super easy.
@TomsBigSpiders

Hi, Callie! I REALLY like that the folks over at TC are constantly trying out new ideas as they try to improve their enclosures. They also listen to feedback, which is fantastic. I get when folks say that they enclosures are too expensive, and I respect that. However, for others, they are completely worth it. Oh my God...I used to watch Mr. Belvedeer! hahaha I haven't heard that name in years. Great name! hahaha When you're ready for a pokie, they'll still be around. There's no rush. If you DO get one, I expect you to let me know. hahah I hope all is well with you and yours and that you're having a great weekend. Thank you so much for your support; it truly means a lot. - Tom

Hi Tom, another great video! For your interest, that enclosure has a warp-resistant lid--that's why the color is a bit different when you view it from the side (almost smokey looking). All of the newer T Cribs have warp-resistant lids, including the slide tops. The door looks to be as well. I have not had a single one of these new lids warp in any significant way. Love my switch enclosures--that removable privacy screen is extremely convenient for checking up on shy species.

Only about half of my poeci slings made homes in the substrate, the others were intent on making them above it. Some of them take substrate from the bottom of the cup to the top to make dirt curtains...

I would say out of the 30 or so that I've raised up, the vast majority started at the bottom. That said, it all depends on the specimen. I like people to know that they can do this as I get a LOT of folks contacting me with worry because theirs are down on the bottom. Thanks for chiming in!

Oh what a coincidence, I just rehoused my P. vittata sling the other day haha. I used the bag method for them and it went as smooth as butter, and they were a perfect angel during the process (certainly better than my A. germani who did *not* appreciate the paintbrush haha).
@calliew311
@calliew311 8 ай бұрын
I don't have a pokie, but from what I've seen, the bag method is scary because it's literally just a ziplock bag and fangs are tougher than that. Lol. I have a P irminia, which is said to have speed and some higher venom than most new worlds, and with her, I used the catch cup and left it in the container because she started getting nervous and I didn't want to stress her out.
@marinebiomancer5048
@marinebiomancer5048 8 ай бұрын
@@calliew311 Yeah I still watch my hands with the bag and only grab it below where the rubber band has it sealed. I've found that the bag method is still a mostly a stress free (for me at least haha) way of containing them without fear that they're going to slip out while I try to get them in the catch cup.

Hey Tom, just finished watching your video. I know you're getting ready to do the podcast right now I've just recently finished listening to all of your podcasts LOL and the other day I employed the orange juice bottle to catch my fort Hall baboon tarantula which was my first escape in a year. I'm a year into the hobby and loving every minute of it only I wasn't able to get the cat back out of the sling enclosure definitely looking forward to your next podcast I listen to those while I'm at work. I'm a groundskeeper to college so when there's not a weed wacker going or a lawn mower or something else, that's loud. I listen to your podcasts and now I can hear a name. A scientific name of a spider and put a face in a set of pedal palps and colors to the name. Whereas a year ago I was not able to do that. I appreciate all you do. It is definitely helped me out just so that I can figure out different things on the different tarantulas in my collection. I have 28 now. Last May I got my first two from fear not and last Sunday I saw my very first molt on my gbb. Regardless, I don't want this comment to get too long. I'm sure you've got other folks comments to read and respond to. Just wanted to say thank you

Its always a great day when Tom posts a video (not a dig, I know your busy), and what a treat - such a stunning girl, and what a gorgeous enclosure to showcase her in. What does the plastic hold up like on these enclosures Tom? I'm in the UK so if I'm going to order some they would need to be an investment - similar ones in the uk tend to scratch really easily .
@calliew311
@calliew311 8 ай бұрын
These do get scratches, I own about 45 or more of them. I'm careful when putting in and taking out substrate and cork bark. But overall, I haven't had any that look terrible even after using more than once over a couple of years. I have thin ones from hobby lobby made for model cars or dolls that I've drilled my own holes into, and after 6 months of use, I just threw it away. The tarantula cribs get about 1/8th the amount of scratches a typical softball display case would get, or the enclosures that are held together by those big rubber bands. Yes these are more expensive, but so far Tarantula Cribs blows everything else out of the water. The extra money is well spent, and now most of not all come with warp proof lids and doors, so they don't warp with species that require humidity. Hopefully, if you see this I answered your questions, and if not, if you leave another one I can try to answer. I know now that they ship over to the UK you can get them, but idk about customs and stuff. We don't have that here in the USA, luckily.

Thanks for chiming in, Callie! Hi, Lisa! The plastic holds up well if you treat them with care. I have several acrylic enclosures that I've used more than once that are still in great shape. You can also check out Arachnosys, as they are in Europe and do some wonderful acrylic enclosures as well.
@lisafosc
@lisafosc 8 ай бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders Wow Arachnosys have some wonderful items, I love their wall mounted enclosures and their simple but innovative accessories, Thanks Tom. Glass is always going to be far more durable, but heavy when pulling out enclosures from the top shelves, I wish they came stock with clear acrylic too, just to make them appear far more seamless such as the acrylic versions. I'm about to upgrade my Female Subfusca's enclosure, she such a huge beautiful girl , this upgrade is long over due to be honest, I think I've settled on a 45cm cubed enclosure for her at this time, I know odd size but its the largest size I can fit in until I can upgrade the shelving systems, I have in my reptile room. I keep meaning to send you some photos of my Seemani slings as they grow, the two I have displaying the blue tinge on the fronts, are currently a very good 2inch now, the blue is still apparent but only clear under bright lighting, so I deffo feel that it is fading as they grow. Rather than flooding you with random pics, i will continue to take photos and send you them all once they mature 😂😂

I’ve been wanting a tarantula for 8 years but everyone I live with refuses to have one in the house and I want to do as much research as I can before getting one. I have loved spiders for quite some time now and I can’t wait to have one of my own. I’ve been following your KZbin for a little while now and I just started listening to the podcast. Keep doing what you are doing because I love learning more and more about these fantastic animals. Thanks for all you do

Man Tom that's a gorgeous spider. My Regalis is one of my favorites and she's super chill. Really surprised Mr. My ruffilatta on the other hands is super skittish and bolts for cover if I even blink wrong. But big green spider right?. You were right about pokies and psalmos. I'd rather rehouse a pokie than a psalmo any day. Psalmopoeus are the only species to give me problems during rehouse. One last thing, my boss is thinking about getting a T but wants a smaller one. I was thinking a dwarf species I'm just worried about sling size. Any good beginner dwarfs?

Hello, Erik! Hapalopus formosus (the Pumpkin Patch) start very small, but they grow quite quickly and will scavenge feed when they are really tiny. That would be one that I would suggest. And big green spider, indeed! hahaha Thanks!

Hey, Tom. Sent you an email. Hi Billie. 👋 Nope, i didn't croack. LOL I like the Tarantula Cribs, but for those of us on a limited income, they are definitely cost prohibitive. Ive been using Reptile Growth enclosures, they use a polymer plastic that is scratch resistant. And cost is fair. I recently bought one that is 10 gallon at 20"x10"x11". Price is reasonable. I bought it for my mystery tarantula who is getting big! Ill send you a picture, and maybe you can help me figure out what she is...lol😅

I just like to get the information out there and let folks do with it as they want. :) Reptile Growth are an awesome alternative. I'll search my email in a moment. Hope all is well!

My sling molted out to a male few weeks back and really want to get a female. But I’d really love to get any ornamentals if you have any available. People definitely give them a bad name but in my experience they have all done amazing. Please get back to me when you get the chance I know your very busy so no rush. Hey Tom! Badly need some help here if that's okay. Just got myself a beautiful 3.5 inch female P. Metallica yesterday and I was wondering what the best type of enclosure for her would be. I've got one enclosure that's about 5.9L x 5.9W x 9.8H in inches and I think that's a pretty good height already. I've also got a 7 inch hollow cork bark in there as well. The only concern I have is that the enclosure only opens up top and I've heard that it's better to have an enclosure that opens up by the side or the front. So my question is... Would it be a big issue if I keep her in that enclosure? And why is it better to have a side or front opening enclosure rather than a top one for her? I just wanna give her the best life possible so I'd really love to get some more professional/experienced insight on this
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 7 ай бұрын
I swear that I answered this one! Okay, let me sum it up. For pokies, I always prefer to work from the top. IF they get spooked, they tend to circle the enclosure. If it opens from the front, that could lead to an escape. I hope that helps!

Tom, I can't stand Tarantula Cribs. I find the magnets to be too strong. They SNAP into place, disturbing my spiders unnecessarily, something I take great pains to avoid. I also find them grossly overpriced, overhyped, and they partner with at least one KZbinr I find particularly repulsive (Richard from T. Collective). I understand you don't like bad mouthing others in the tarantula community, but I have no such misgivings, particularly when I can point to specific abusive/destructive behavior. :D To each his own I guess.

@calliew311

It's funny because the magnets used to not be as strong and they had to add more to the original switches that came in a separate pouch. And my large coffin crib is so difficult to close without it snapping down. My poor curly hair is always ducking. I like Tarantula Cribs, I own about 45 of them, maybe a few more than that, but I haven't had bad experiences with them, except for the collaboration with Petko from Dark Den. I only bought the arboreal version and yes it has cross ventilation at 3 sides of the square 1.5 inches at the top. There are 0 holes anywhere near the bottom of the enclosures, and they were stuffy. Stuffy enough that I went ahead and drilled in about 20 more holes in the front sides and top, so I could truly have cross ventilation. Only having the very top of the enclosure getting fresh air just wasn't enough, imo.

@@lucassiegel7239 I watched him verbally abuse one of his facebook group's members for nothing, then threaten to boot him if he said anything. I hate bullies and couldn't let it go so I said something. He replied something along the lines of, "It's fun to be the boss." It was seriously like watching a little kid beat up another little kid just to take out some angst. At that point I figured I'd eventually say something that'd get me booted and the group was irrevocably soured at that point so I left.

I’m sorry to hear that. The magnets are strong and they do snap down on certain models. Some spiders are incredibly strong and we want to make sure nothing escapes. The sliders don’t do this. Regarding price, we try and use the best quality and try to constantly improve when we see a flaw. We have brought many innovations to the hobby and hope to continue to give customers the option to use these innovations. As of now, we have the most variety of spider enclosures of any company in the US and hope to continue to innovate. Sorry for your previous experience.
