I was traveling and it took way longer than I anticipated! Also, let me know if you prefer me to break up longer reactions into two parts? So I've had some after-reaction thoughts- This album is actually good, not my favorite, but when I look back on my reaction, I realize I liked a lot of the songs! I was just thrown off by some of the big duds in it and the length which hindered me from fully enjoying it the first time around. Also, I think if I would have listened to it when it came out (2017), my emotional response to some of the songs would have been magnified 100% because I think she captured that time so well. Overall, as a full album, Id take points off because I won't be listening to this straight through, just plucking my faves.

I LOOOOOOOVEEE your outfit!! I think Lust For Life divides the fandom, it was the inflection of her catalogue. BTD, Ultraviolence and Honeymoon were like the reflection of her past and toxic relation with alcoholism and this was rehab. Next was NFR (made history) Chemtrails and Blue Banisters, her maturity I think 🤔. Well, that doesn’t mean this was a bad album, I looooove 13 Beaches, Cherry and Heroin ❤

0:20 I think people just assumed that you're gonna go through the albums anyway, but also Lust for Life to Lana stans is what Lover is to Taylor stans. An underrated, sometimes hated, transitional work towards the beloved NFR.

As a Lover stan I can confirm 😂 Ironically Lover and LFL have some of the most skips for me when it comes to full albums, but the songs that are left are so damn good that it bumps both albums to top 3 in each of their discographies.

Heroin changed my life . Love came out day before I went into rehab and the “don’t worry baby” soothed my fear. And the hopeless romantic hoping once I was better I’d find that love. When I got out of treatment and I heard the whole album once I got to heroin it was like someone wrote a song in my point of view. I can explain almost every track meaning something to me. I get a lot of crap for this album being a fav.

As a long time LDR fan, I think we are so used to the music that she makes for herself and then decides to share with us and on this album, she scrapped her hedonistic approach and actually crafted it for her fans. This album is her most commercially accessible album sonically. Honeymoon on the other hand was ahead of its time. Honeymoon is objectively a great /times-less record as opposed to Lust for Life which is a dated record. If you hear some L4L demos you’ll see that she was going for more witchy/darker approach at first which I think would’ve resonated with us a lot more. This album is great for what it is but it’s at the bottom for me but it’s not because the album isn’t good. It’s just her other records were just SO good and this one didn’t measure up for me.

Ahh I'm so happy you reacted to this album, thank you! I always enjoy hearing your thoughts and opinions on & interpretations of music. This album/era is special to me because the one and only time I've seen LDR live was summer 2017, and I heard so many of this album's songs during that concert (Cherry, White Mustang and Change were three particular highlights). Such a special occasion and memory that I feel grateful for. The "what what what" in Summer Bummer is truly so funny; also something about that song's atmosphere makes me want to learn to skateboard. This reaction reminded me of how lovely Tomorrow Never Came is, haven't listened to that one in a long while. Also, I love the lyric "when I don't feel beautiful or stable / maybe it's enough to just be where we are". I remember at some point many people were saying Get Free sounds too much like Radiohead's Creep (which, at some point, was said to sound too much like The Hollies' The Air That I Breathe) but idk about that. "Out of the black, into the blue" is a beautiful line and sentiment.
@tobi68762 жыл бұрын
I'm kind of late but i hope you read this cause it really changed my overview of this album. There's two aspects about it that, to me, are really important, first to understand it completely you need to realize that the first 8 tracks are the Lust half and the latter 8 tracks are the Life half and the Coachella song is the switch point (noticed by how she says she's enjoying herself at this very expensive music festival and out of nowhere she just starts thinking about everyone that is not there, the climate, people all around). The second aspect is that this album is probably the most important one in her whole discography, it acts as a stepping stone not only from one sound to another but also from a state of mind to another. She closes the album with Get Free saying "out of the black, into the blue" and she has said that to her, the word blue, is more of a retreat into nature, a happiness kind of feeling, not really the sadness that people often associate wth blue and later begins the making of NFR which she has also stated she associates with the color blue (NFR title track "'Cause you're just a man It's just what you do Your head in your hands As you color me blue"). Just a fun little analysis.

if i remeber correctly coachella wimm is about her being at coahella during a time where the us was at tension with north korea and missle threats were all over the news. the song seems to be reflective of her own contribution and the feeling of guilt she has for being able to be at coachella while people are scared out of their minds, vulnerable, not knowing what might happen to them or their parents or their children
@abezhr2 жыл бұрын
Heroin is a song about losing a lover to addiction, she kind of blames herself for not doing much about it “i put you on an aeroplane”. She describes her moving on from her loss “all my friends have come cuz they still feel him here, I wanna leave I’ll probably stay another year” being stuck to a memory. “Taking all my medicine to take my thoughts away” gets mentioned as a question if she’s going through the same path, as well as just coping with all that’s going on. “It’s hot!” Climate change, heroine in the blood. She’s describing her observations of the world and how scary it’s getting as she going around alone this time. “Makes me feel like I could change” she still somehow finds her purpose in all of that. I think it’s one of her strongest storytelling and capturing of a moment of shift and change in one’s life. Makes it relatable to many including myself

I feel like there's half of a really great album here, but (like all of her other songs) she doesn't always know when to rein it in a little. But I can still give it a spin 5 years later and find something good in it, which is something.
@josephd32752 жыл бұрын
I really get that the « take off all your clothes » line sounds weird and breaks the immersion for you, but I personally always thought it had its place in this song. The way she repeats « take off » twice before saying the whole sentence the sentence emphasizes the double meaning of these words, with the idea of a plane taking off, or in this case of a career since I do believe the song is about fame. I understand it as a commentary about how women in the entertainment sector sometimes have to « take off their clothes » for their careers to take off because of the double standards they have to face in a male dominated industry. To me it makes sense here since the « climb up the H of the Hollywood sign » line is a clear reference to Peg Entwistle, a young actress from the golden age of old Hollywood (which Lana loooves to reference) who killed herself jumping from this letter. Maybe she is to Lana a symbol of the pain female artists go through. Of course this is also a very fun song and I don’t want to force on you my pessimistic vision of it hahaha but maybe that way this line, which indeed seems kind of off, has a reason to be the pre-chorus. Anyway, this was a great video as always
