I am also a newbie to modern poetry and I did start out with: Lang Leav, Amanda Lovelace, Etc. but unfortunately did not like their way of writing. I'm assuming it's because of the overly simplistic way of writing. However I do love John Burnside, but specifically: All One Breath. His collections are really good. Cyril Wong is another favorite of mine, his collection; Straw Sticks Brick is so good and vulgar. Benjamin Alire Sáenz's poetry collections are so good for when I need something emotional and hard hitting, he's great.

Ahhhh finally !!! 🤗 I read The Princess Saves Herself in this one because of you and I loved it so much it made want to read more poetry. I never realized how much I loved poetry, I was to intimidated to read a poetry book but now I'm hooked. I'm definitely reading all the other ones you recommended. Really liked the idea of Love Her Wild. 😉

I thought I didn't really like modern poetry but I randomly picked up Princess in the book store the other week and read a few poems and teared up. Safe to say I ended up buying it and hope to read it really soon.

You should read *The Country Without a Post Office.* It is set in a different culture and place, so maybe you'll enjoy it. It is heartbreaking and beautiful. Eg 'It rains as I write this Mad heart, be brave.' "The man who buries his house in the sand and digs it up again, each evening, learns to put it together quickly and just as quickly to take it apart. My parents sleep like children in the dark. I am too far to hear them breathe"

Literature does not need "trigger warnings"! Good grief, who invented this silly practice?! There's been literature of all kinds, people of kinds, and experiences of all kinds from the dawn of time. Never did we hear of this practice until a few years ago. It's ridiculous! They're WORDS. They can't jump out and bite you. If you don't like it, stop reading!
@96Klara6 жыл бұрын
"Trigger" has been used in the psychological field for quite some time, a lot more than just a few years, and describes how certain things (can be words or events or basically anything) brings a person back to a traumatic experience they have experienced, which is obviously highly upsetting for that person. If you, like myself, don't suffer from any triggers I think you should be very grateful for that while respecting that some people do and that for them these trigger warnings are very helpful and may save them a lot of unnecessary distress. I don't understand why you would be bothered by things having trigger warnings, if you do have triggers then they're great and if you don't have any triggers you don't have to read them, problem solved.
@Shamsshamsssss6 жыл бұрын
theyre not just words
@Yesica19936 жыл бұрын
@ Shams Albeshawi Of course they are. What else could they be? Nobody makes you read them in the first place, or continue to read them if you already started! Like I said, literature, people, and their experiences have existed for millennia. People somehow survived all that time without trigger warnings. Now suddenly, just a few years ago, they can't? In other words, people need to GROW UP!
@UrJollyGoodFellow6 жыл бұрын
this is such an uninformed comment. do not speak for other people if you're not personally affected by TRIGGERING words. you don't know (neither do i) of other people's experiences with reading and how much words reach them. it would be best to have respect, if not empathy, for them lol all you have to do is mind your business and somehow manage to see that this should not be affecting you in any way. also why are you even reading if you think books are just words.
@96Klara6 жыл бұрын
First of all, if you read my original answer then maybe you wouldn't feel the need to repeat your ignorant and incorrect argument. Like I said "trigger" is not by any means a new concept and is an actual psychological term that is used (and has been used for quite a long time) by professionals. It's not something kids have come up with and randomly started using because they felt like being catered to. Secondly, that people have "survived" doesn't mean that the concept isn't needed. People survive a lot of things that aren't necessarily pleasant or good for them. Just because people survived before wheelchairs were invented do you think people who can't walk don't need them? Do you think we should just stop making wheelchairs because people don't actually need them to live?
