goes to show you're never too old to be fooled. the more we learn scientifically the more illogical the atheist stance becomes. this guy has always had a "_clever_* way to argue against God but never an _intelligent_ way. think about it, he says believing in God only pushes the problem back a step because 1st you have to know "where did God come from. so you might as well believe in science and the big bang". using this (huh) _logic_ there is no point in believing in the big bang because it only pushes the problem back a step because first you have to know what was before the big bang in order for it to form. his explanation for this is "nothing created everything" which go _against_ everything we know about science. nothing cant create anything and when this false claim got shot down he claims nothing isnt nothing, its something. " it *COULD* be blah, blah blah or *MAYBE* blah, blah, blah.... he has never said anything that wasn't ridiculous or a "guessing game". 10 years ago he took the stance that atheists *MUST* mock other religions with contempt. once his militant plan got completely destroyed he turned to this new "softer" way to recruit souls for the devil. feel free to believe what you want and get tricked out of your ever lasting soul if it makes you feel " _smart_ ". theres a sucker born every minute, i'm just not one of them.

I remember watching this as an 18 year old, when it was first broadcast. I had always found the Christmas Lectures fun and interesting but this series particularly stood out to me and made an impression that has not diminished. Wonderful to see it again on KZbin.

They say life imitates art but I think it’s the other way around. Men like you are the reason we enjoy life and live in luxury today. Human progress would not have happened without people like you refusing to cling to mythology and exaggerated claims. Definitely a gem this series is. Well, you can still be an effective vet and believe in mythology. The two things aren't all that related. Would you consider a Native American who believes in the tales passed down by his ancestors to be an ineffective civil engineer?

@@theboombody If you are using mythology in the "Just telling stories passed down" yes. If you are using myth in the "False belief or idea" term, no. Religion is a contradiction to science, you can't have your cake and eat it too. (In my opinion) A lot of religious people, like ken Ham, get away with using science in their theology because they use the "It's open to interpretation" excuse.

I am sure you know that Dawkins does not say that because the flying spaghetti monster doesn’t exist, then God doesn’t exist. What he says, is that God and the flying spaghetti monster are equally as likely to exist.

@@kennethmarshall306 the theory of darwinian evolution is not complete. science is discovering incongruities and adjusting, etc. all the time. to say it's "true" without explaining the flaws is misleading. "equally likely to exist" along with his extreme avocation toward getting people to *_NOT BELIEVE_* strongly suggests he does not believe he exists and staunchly wants to convince others to believe God doesn't exist. the fact that he got you to give up your sole by nothing more than his _opinion_ on whether or not God exists is a good example of what i am trying to explain. it's your soul and you are certainly allowed to do with it as you wish. i just dont see how he is able to convince so many to do the same. i simply see a man with an opinion using illogical argument to do so.

A brilliant presentation. Professor Dawkins demonstrates with concrete objects ,and also live animals to explain how computer simulation does accelerate as to manifest the astonishing outcome. Demonstrating how a slow progression of favorable attributes is proof or simply said evidence that evolution is factual. And by doing as he does that the creation myth is the result of incomplete understanding. The point being is to move to a more relevant and useful understanding that is truth seeking. Materialism has caused a lot of angst - some of it affected, but a lot of it genuine. It's also ludicrously oversold in the modern world and Dawkins is a prime offender. I don't think organised religion has the whole truth either, but I can't help feeling that the policy you referred to might have had some advantages. Some of the people I cherish, both public figures and common people close to me, are religious. This is true for the vast majority of atheists. You say that you respect free thinking. I have no respect whatsoever for theistic claims. This is because every theistic claim I've heard so far is either unfalsifiable or evidently not true. It's humans that deserve respect until proven unworthy of that respect. Ideas do not deserve respect until proven worthy of respect. Many religious people get really confused about this simple principle, because they consider their religion a big part of their identity. I find ideas such as gods and devils, angels and demons, heaven and hell, reincarnation, sin and karma, miracles and prophecies and blessings and curses and other kinds of magic, as silly at best and pernicious at worst, and thus unworthy of respect. I fully respect the right of religious people to hold such silly beliefs and express them freely, as long as they don't try to impose those beliefs and any harmful conclusions they extract from them on the rest of society. So no, there is no such thing as a single "religious mind". But some religious minds belong to theocrats. Theocrats are never satisfied until they impose their dogma on everyone else. They capitalize the words "truth", "way" and "life" but they have no respect for truth, or other people's right to live their life their own way. There is the barbarism of the religious mind; there is the darkness that science is trying to illuminate. Unlike theists in general, theocrats are, without a single exception, anti-science. And science, while not perfect, is the best method we have for approaching the truth, while religious faith doesn't even qualify as such a method. Since your feeling about the practice of burning atheists alive having some advantages was only fleeting, I'm not going to comment (other than say that reading about it made me smile, since I was coming from another video made by an atheist who was really critical of Dawkins). I'm really curious as to what you mean when you say that the deck is too stacked in favor of Dawkins, and that he has blood on his hands. I presume this has something to do with materialism, but since this word carries multiple meanings I don't want to venture a guess. Could you be more specific?

I remember this lecture so vividly back in 1991. I was always a keen watcher of these lectures. I found this series eye opening and went into the lectures with an open mind and found it quite revealing especially the part where we evolved from fish. It was explained so well i didn't question it. The Bible version of creation didn't fit well with me about Adam and Eve being the first humans and everything human sprang from that because it didn't make any sense on so many levels. I had no idea who Richard Dawkins was before I saw this lecture in 1991 and then many years later discovered his work again when he came to prominence on Sunday Debate Talk shows hosted by Nicky Campbell. Sometime later also a brilliantly presented documentary called Beautiful minds.

I think the thing that a lot of people get wrong is that the Biblical Creation account is not the same as The Evolution of the Species. The Creation account is not about fossils and dinosaurs or the time before Man, its about what Man created. For example, The Maltese Shi Tzu is a creation it did not evolve.

Incredible timing....this video. Im just now reading "The Blind Watchmaker" after i re-read "The Selfish Gene"....decided to go thru all of Dawkins books that i have in my book collection (also own The Extended Phenotype, The Ancestors Tale 2nd edition with Yan Wong and The Greatest Show on Earth) back to back....will then follow with Edward O. Wilson and Stephen Jay Gould. Im enjoying The Blind Watchmaker so far but have to say that i have read hundreds of books on evolutionary theory and theres now better books concerning these types of arguments....but Dawkins definitely has a certain writing style that is very enjoyable and for individuals that are just started getting into biology and evolution....he is probably the best science communicator alive. His "The Greatest Show on Earth" together with "Why Evolution is True" by Jerry A. Coyne would probably be my recommendation for an individual that has never read a book about evolutionary theory. Another great first time read would be "Improbable Destinies" by Jonathan B. Losos or my personal favorite in terms of writing style for a first read would be "Darwinism and its Discontents" by Michael Ruse.

I've read books from both Edward O. Wilson and Stephen Jay Gould decades ago and they were fantastic authors, Edward O. Wilson The Diversity Of Life and Stephen Jay Gould Wonderful Life were the books that I've read. Richard Leaky The Sixth Extinction was also a great book and Desmond Morris The Naked Ape is also very good but I haven't read anything from Richard Dawkins. Out of all Dawkins books which one would you recommend the most? Out of the few I mentioned it would be Wonderful Life that I enjoyed the most.

But it's not only biology that disproves all religions and "spirituality" it's maths, physics, chemistry, astronomy There is no "cause" in life, there is no "cause" in evolution, there is no "cause" ... Our galaxy is amazingly huge, it might take another hundred of thousands of years before we create something that will help us explore it and there is a lot of "ifs" Now even IF we explore our galaxy - remember that we already discovered millions of other galaxies Now imagine millions of galaxies that we know about and millions or more that we don't know about... Now thinking that this whole universe was created by something/someone is very infantile. To understand the world you have to reject fairy tales and every faith, religion is nothing but fairy tale. So we humans thank to our amazing organ our (brain) 🧠 we are able to have create a cause for ourselves, and that is amazing and beautiful. Evolution is beautiful, it doesn't have a cause, it's just happens but if you understand how it happens how everything is working you'll be amazed not only by evolution itself but you will be amazed by possibilities that you can create for yourself thank to your brain. Religion is cutting your life from reality and the truth - science is flexible, science is always changing because smarter people like Darwin or Newton went further and further and have explained to us stuff that we assumed we know something about. So wrong questions are being asked - the key for leaving all religions is for people to ask more "how" and less "why" Btw I'm glad you got over depression, hope you always stay positive.

Didn't watch all of it, but this question was answered later at 52:42 It makes some sense, but I'm not completely convinced that all things animals (other than humans) make are created without conscious thought, or more correctly, strictly as a result of evolution. And contrastingly, I think some things humans created could be just as much a result of our genetic evolution. I don't see the distinction as black and white as Dawkins, but it's mostly semantics, and I don't think it matters too much.

I have a little theory about the design of the universe issue. 1. Only man, of all the species, can design things. Yes, some other creatures "make things" with varying dgrees of complexity, but none as complex and constructive/destructive as the human brain can do. 2. But scientists and atheists attribute "design" to evolutionary trial and error, ie Darwinianism. Fair enough, a better concept, better evidence, I say. 4. However, the religious perspective automatically and pro-actively via the clergy humbled man into intelligent insignificance compared to "God's skills". But subsequently, the Darwinian perspective thus elevated man to the smartest creature in existence. Sure, we moderns say -- "Nature is powerful but we can overcome nature (as if gods) through our sciences and technologies". That is until an earthquake teaches us we can't! 5. Imo, the two sides of the design arguments are an age old paradox of egoistic anthropo-supremism complex (the sciences), versus the Divine Awe and Humility principle of the creationists. Funnily, the Old Gods' Laws were to be obeyed for fear of repercussions. But nowadays, Nature's Environmental Laws are ignored, or blatantly disobeyed! This, I think, is the arogance which denies climate change, plus the arogance of the techno-ecologists who believe we will science our way our of it all! 6. Sure, some scientists do have awe for nature's complexities and humility in the face of it. But many more laymen don't -- they shit all over nature through ego and desire and greed. Thus we have runaway man-made global destruction ... often DUE TO the inventions of science, coupled with conscience-free reasoning. *Conclusion* There's a beautiful aspect of earthly caretakership, humility, respect for existence within the Old Beliefs, and a nasty, selfish aspect to the modern Science-olgy we see dominant today. Imo, the whole Theological vs Darwinian design argument is a total furphy, a stage-managed philosophical distraction from the EVERYDAY REALITY. What the planet actually needs is better care for nature, better care for fellow man. In a way, who cares how it was made. The existential issue is the here and now of our own Intelligent Destruction (note caps). 😢 The obvious fact is that modern man has little appreciation of what is truly intelligent design (note no caps).

Why am I only just discovering these videos and channel now?! I read a lot of Dawkins in prison and have just been released now and I find these 😁 some people turn to God in prison but fortunately quite a few get a reality check instead. I wish his books could be re-written tho in an easier to understand format …… maybe for children ……. It would help him reach out to a whole new audience!

Outstanding lecture! As a teacher myself I can say the pacing, and the sequencing of logical steps built upon each other through reasoning is very conducive to learning. Although lectures aren't necessarily the best format for learning, the way this particular lecture is structured and delivered is about as good as a lecture could possibly be.

A much younger professor Richard Dawkins. just before he started getting grey hair. this was just before he convinced me to make the decision, to become an Atheist. this is very reminiscent of Carl Sagan. these are two of the most amazing professors. we have had the pleasure of knowing. unfortunately Carl Sagan Is no longer with us and he is very missed. however Richard Dawkins is still with us and it's all the more reason we should continue to listen to him.

Son's geology text had many photos of minerals at very high magnification. It seemed to be crystals for all specimens. That is one thing that happens with the elements of the periodic table. The other version is the wet gooey version that is biology. Just the way it works.
