As a Finn I just keep on watching these reaction videos of this song. So glad people have rediscovered Poets of the Fall! The song itself is almost 20 yrs old! The lyrics just remains mystical, and I like it.❤

Hi! I was the cinematographer on this one... so thanks for the compliment. A great song, and great work by the video's director Stobe Harju, and the team at Nitro FX who made the visual effects, which were not a small feat considering this video was done about 15 years ago.

What you do is much more compelling, and actually worth watching Has she reacted to Nightwish's Ghost Love Score yet ? :P

I think this is a story about forming of the band. Marko used to work in corporate environment if I remember correctly. The man in the booth represents logical side of him who although feels trapped, still operates in that environment. The girl in the gas mask represents the artist side of him. She tries to find something worthwhile in there, but can't find anything and decides to leave. This leads to sort of splitting of the mind moment, which causes Marko to quit his job and form the band.

Crying can also see as "feeding rain"... cause you can interpret this song about someone taking relationship lightly and other one taking it seriously.

Came looking for this comment and i wholeheartedly agree. Feeding the rain -> giving someone a reason to cry. The whole setting of him being a carnival to her but her being his whole life to him(comes alive when she arrives and dies when she leaves) was super deep for angsty teen me

Poets of the Fall is a Finnish Alternative rock-indie rock-post-grunge band since 2003 with the Singer Marko Saaresto having a great baritone male voice with good technique and being able to sing purely and very long falsetto, that voice coaches are surprised. Their break or global hit song is this “Carnival of Rust” you just reacted. Also great one is the “Poets of the Fall - Alexander Theatre Sessions. There they play only a singer and a piano or some acoustic instruments in an old early 1800s theatre in Helsinki with it’s great acoustics. Especially great song from this Sessions is the song “Angel” (Alexander Theatre Sessions / Episode 7) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoW7lWxmpbudeck - Other song more the rock type with amazing video is their song “Daze” (Official Video w/ Lyrics)" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpqaf4CpqNekqac which has very long chorus Marko singing in falsetto. They have also just released their latest album “Ghostlight” that can be found in their official YT site: kzbin.info/door/0hNui8bT7yV0Xb8w8YxjHw . Enjoy a new great finding :)

And to add to that, many gamers most likely heard them even before "Carnival of Rust" since their song "Late Goodbye" was in "Max Payne 2". A game from 2003 developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Rockstar Games. Their other songs have been in later games by Remedy Entertainment. This is because PotF lead vocalist Marko Saaresto and Remedy's Sami Järvi, known internationally better as Sam Lake, are friends.

I always took this video to represent the initial enticement, intervening tribulations and final failure of a poisonous relationship. The gas mask was her sense of self-preservation. Every being in his carnival was a facet of him. The final ticket was a plea to her not to leave, offering her his Heart Of Hearts. The doll represented a child? Always makes me sad and yet the video and music is so beautiful.

This is excellent! POTF is my second famous Finnish band after the mighty Nightwish. They've also done an admirable international career. They are very versatile band doing anything from ballads to hard rock. Marko Saaresto is an excellent singer, mostly acclaimed for his pure falsetto. As an 'Fall' person myself, l really love their deep thought melancholy. This video won some prizes for it's artistry back in the days. Their latest album "Ghostlight" (2022) was my favorite album of the last year.

Poets of the Fall - ANGEL (Alexander Theatre Sessions) Marko singing, accompanied only by a great sounding grand piano. No audience. They uploaded one song per month in 2020. I know you can't react to everything, but check on your own Marko's falsetto at it's best. Poets of the Fall - "DAZE" (offical video) Radio friendly song I would say, sticks to your head right away. Masquerade theme in the video.

They celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. I’ve loved this band since the release of their very first album. Not only is his voice amazing, but Marko’s lyrics are in a league of their own, always very poetic and beautiful. I’ve rarely heard such beautiful words before, not even from songwriters who are native speakers. If you get a chance to see them live, do seize the opportunity, all of their shows have an amazing energy, you’ll definitely enjoy it. Thank you for taking the time to not only listen but also pay attention to the lyrics. Oh, and to appreciate this band even more, you should also know they have always been independent (by choice). Everything they put out there, from albums, videos, merch, artwork, etc, is their own. It certainly helped that Marko has a background in advertising, he ran his own company before he formed the band and decided he wanted to be a full-time artist instead. Wonderful reaction, thank you so much! 🙏👏

The music video is definitely one of the best Finnish music videos of all time, if not the best. The director Stobe Harju, is the creative mastermind also behind Poets' two other music videos: Lift and Locking up the sun, and his visual wizardry can be seen in the music videos Noise and Islander by Nightwish. The character Marko is playing in this video has been inspired by the Zoltar animatronic fortune teller machine. The looks of the character are from Marko's imagination (as he is amongst other things also a graphic designer) as he elaborates in an interview by Dukascopy Stars also available on KZbin. For me this song is a tragic love song, pouring out your heart even in the event of premonition of your love walking away while your heart is burning for that special someone. In live renditions of this song there is an introductory stanza, not included on MV or CD. "Down behind the gates of darkness dwell, the man in the box between heaven and hell, with his broken heart sings the song of love". Even that won't make the interpretation any easier. The greatness of Poets' songs is that the lyrics are always enigmatic, full of imagery - which leaves (with purpose?) room for personal interpretation. Just as art should.

Just found the reaction to this song, a song that i love. A few thoughts on the lyrics if the man in the box is her Heart and the Lady with the mask has her senses impeded and she cannot see a way through her pain. She is in the deepest recess of her mind in her carnival of rust. She turns to symbols the tarot cards in the video for her answers "Red cape and foil come closing in for a kill", This metaphor represents the deception of the matador, where he uses a red cape to deceive the bull, (our trust) then the foil (sword) is used to kill the animal, (To make a killing, a con) she is being deceived by her choices in life represented by the vendors in the video, she has been here before in her carnival of rust to search for answers , represented by the vendors change in face angle which you noticed. In the end she takes the doll representing the same wrongful choices in her life and walks away looking down a bleak street, but she pauses as her heart keeps imploring her to return Cor Cordis or cordium Heart of Hearts and we are left to ponder will she return to find out what is really in her heart of hearts

I believe the song talks about a relationship suffering from a spending/shopping addiction and how he just wants the relationship. All the innuendo surrounding spending, the taste of greed, not being able to lay still bc of the desire by the addiction, and mostly bc of the line "where enough is not the same it was before" meaning all the spending doesn't cure the desire to spend. A the things bought never fulfills the need for more. Feeding the rain could be the money aspect, but also tears. Rust usually starts after wet dries up. With the rain, things don't rust, so feed it so the rain keeps falling and the rust doesn't start. Or, "cause without your love mylife ain't nothing but this carnival of rust" could signify without her, his life is old/rusty. She brings the new to him. Either way, the song is absolutely beautiful.

Thanks for your reaction! I think they likely wouldn't put it this way, but I think of the Fall as the fall of man from the Garden of Eden; Poets of the Fall. Marko has a fantastic voice. You'll notice in the video that the carnival barker that gives the girl the doll at the ball throwing game and the man in the box are the same man (Marko). People try to read too much into this song. I think it's just about a man whose broken relationship is drying him out and tearing him apart. The rusted carnival can only come alive again if she "waters" it with her love for him by returning to him.
