Floor you know. Anneke van Giersbergen is a very respected metal singer, although she is much more than that. Devin Townsend calls her the "Tinkerbell of Metal" for her ability to sprinkle magic gold dust over songs as well as her radiant smile. Marcela Bovio IS Mexican, although ever since she was invited by Arjen for one of his projects she has been living in the Netherlands. She is an absolute vocal gem as well as an established violinist and arranger. This song was originally written by Arjen for Anneke for the Album electric Castle. For this live performance he asked Marcela to rearrange it for these three voices.

Every live Ayreon vid that gets released, I learn to "worship" Marcela more and more. Rick Wakeman once described Jon Anderson as having a voice that can 'cut through' anything. You could put down a kitchen sink on tape and Jon will somehow find a melody and tone that will sit on top of it. Marcela is the opposite. Yes, she's an incredible lead on her own right, but in these Ayreon situations, she has the ability to change her tone, change her timber, and put the support behind whomever has the lead, whether it's Floor's open airs, Anneke's front-loading, Damien's and Micheal Mill's stratospheres - she'll find the timber to harmonize with them without any distracting contrasts in tone.

What a lot of people seem to miss is what Marcella Bovio is doing in this performance and that is that she provides most of the harmony part (except for a few instances where they do 3 part harmony like in the end) and that she is adjusting the colour of her voice ever so slightly to match it with the one she singing with.

Yes, and that's no doubt why Arjen uses her for backing vocals on a lot of his stuff. Her voice is versatile enough to be able to match tone and vibrato so well with other singers, no matter who they are. That feels quite a rare talent.

The group members at time: Arjen (vocals and electric guitar), Marcela (lead singer and violin), Lori Linstruth (Arjen's girl friend/wife - electric guitar), Diana Bovio (Marcela sister - background vocals), Johan Van Stratum (Marcela's former husband - bass guitar), Alejandro Millan (keyboards) and Davy Mickers (drums). This is from the opera "Into the Electric Castle". In a post-apocalyptic timeframe, only the founders of humanity, the immortal Forever, still exist. To achieve their primordial goal, tapping human emotions they can no longer create themselves, the Forever have re-embodied eight random characters from the history of mankind. They are sent into a contest of survival. Four succeed, four will fail. Anneke plays the part of the Egyptian, who is utterly disappointed that the Egyptian god Ra is not coming to reality and to welcome her. So she fails to survive and chooses oblivion. In the 2003 Star One band the 19 y/o Floor sang this song, together with her sis Irene. So it was fun to have Floor in this song, for she has few parts to sing in the Castle. The initial song of the opera is called Isis and Osiris, which introduces the first five characters: The Highlander, the Indian, the Knight, the Roman and the Egyptian. Played by Fish, Simone Simons, Damian Wilson, Edwin Balogh and Anneke van Giersbergen. All five characters have their own melodies in a single musical frame. Ingenious, don't you agree? In the second song, Amazing Flight, the barbarian and the hippie join the fray, played by John Jaycee Cuijpers and Arjen Lucassen himself. Everyone cheers as he hits the stage. In The Tunnel of Light the Highlander loses his ways. In The Garden of Emotions the Egyptian is disappointed and she will quit the train in this song we just heard. The demise of the Indian is also spectacular in the song Cosmic Fusion. She (Simone) becomes too enamoured with sun-like spirits, and despite warnings those spirits suddenly come to life and sing in growls. These spirits are played by Simone's Epica band mates! Simone's character dies with a bloodcurdling wail. Finally, in the Two Doors we witness the (wrong) choice of the Barbarian, and his fate is sealed too. The Narrator is John deLancie, a veteran from Star trek. All these roles were played in the 2019 live registration (all songs on YT). In earlier versions, and on the CD we find different players/singers.

Liitle backstory.. From the Into the Electric Castle album. On this album the Forever have brought 8 humans to a non-time place to put them through tests and solve puzzles in order for the Forever to study their emotions. The Forever (the original 10 humans from Planet Y in the Day that the World Breaks Down) have evolved to the point that they no longer feel emotions and want to study the humans to try and regain their emotional abilities. In the previous song, The Garden of Emotions, the Egyptian is overcome by her emotions of dread that Amon Ra is coming to seal her fate. In this song the Egyptian has lost her will to live after her experiences in The Garden of Emotions. Her dreams have been stolen and she no longer wants to participate in the Forever's games. Her soul yearns for the Valley of the Queens where she can rest for eternity and so she gives up her life.

If you like harmoniess check out the live performance of 'Somewhere' by Within Temptation featuring Anneke van Giersbergen. It is a beatiful ballad duet between Sharon den Adel of WT and Anneke van Giersbergen. It is captionned 'The best duet ever' and for very good reason! Within Temptation is a pioneer of symphonic metal and one of the biggest and most important bands that has ever been in the genre. They are Dutch and started in 1996 (the same year as Nigthwish) but they were way more 'symphonic metal' already from the start than a band like Nightwish at that time. One of the earliest and true pioneering bands of symphionic metal as we know it today!!! And to have them performing this beutiful balld with Anneke (the godmother and inspiration for so many female metal singers and female metal fronted bands in The Netherlands and beyond) is just beautiful.

The original song was performed by Anneke alone as she had the part of the egyptian on the album. She rearranged this song with Arjen and Joost van den Brook (the keyboard guy, also known als "LUL" ) for the live performance. Some corrections regarding Anneke's history. Anna Maria van Giersbergen became known as the lead singer and songwriter of the Dutch progressive/alternative rock band The Gathering, between 1995 and 2007 (not symphonic). The Gathering started with two women before Anneke and was a band that mixed death and doom metal. In 1998 guitarist Jelmer Wiersma leaves the band, perhaps because the band's fifth album, How to Measure a Planet?, abandons Doom Metal and becomes lighter, atmospheric and melodic. It came to be called Trip Rock. The band had elements of progressive rock and alternative rock. -------> It was never symphonic. The Sirens formed in June 2014, a project featuring vocalists Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy) and Kari Rueslatten (ex-The 3rd and the Mortal). The project constituted the meeting of the three pioneers of the Female Fronted style ------- > (it is not symphonic). Including opening a show for the Finnish band Nightwish, on August 29, 2015. Interestingly, Tiuomas (Nightwish) was mainly inspired by the three bands represented by the three vocalists (Tuomas Holopainen): "At that time, The Third and the Mortal, Theater of Tragedy and The Gathering were an inspiration to write my own material". ------> Nightwish didn't start out as symphonic metal, it was power metal with folk elements. Theater of Tragedy is from Norway and invented the Beauty and the Beast style (one man one woman, duet). The band was death + doom + gothic and went through an industrial phase. Everything mixed with metal. ------> Again... it was never symphonic. The 3rd and the Mortal (The Third and the Mortal) is a Norwegian experimental doom metal band formed in 1992. The group merged in its sound several musical genres over the years, such as progressive rock, jazz, ambient music, folk and electronic (latest works). Oh! Before I forget, it was never symphonic.

Hi Rosalie, I do appreciate your expanding on the content of queens losing their realm, their command, their millennium. Of course this is a metaphore for the connection and the respect and the love we all lose when dying. Tolkien says it beautifully in 'The Lord of the Rings' when he describes the sorrow of the Elves, who know their time is over. And from Rammstein we learn, in 'Zeit' (see the video), how harsh death is. At times difficult to watch, but grand.

Well, Arjen himself has said that that is a common misconception, so I’m sorry but you are wrong. When Arjen was looking for a name for his main character in his first rock opera he wanted a name that sounded both futuristic and medieval at the same time. So he came up with Ayreon. He has explained this several times and mentioned that it has nothing to do with his own name.

I lost my beloved Majesty in December and entombed her in stone by a tiny channel she hunted for mice in. The circumstances of her death did involve lies and betrayal by someone wrongly trusted. It will hurt forever like every such brutality. There was only one comfort: I played this and could not stop playing it over and over. And over. It is a great comfort to all who see cats as that bridge to the other world and as household rulers teaching us curiosity, calm, protecting from raiders and true love of sentients unlike ourselves. Egypt is to me the greatest civilization yet. The ancients knew this. Sleep well by your little Valley tiny panther. To me this will be your song forever.

The rose, it is often used in this context I feel (and that's very suitable), from a Japanese song with a title meaning "The Rose Perishes Beautifully" through The Rose to a German song with the title "Eine Rose Für Den Abschied" (A Rose for the fareweell/Goodbye if I'm not mistaken) which has this line, " Seit dem Tag, als die schwarze Rose ihre letztes Blatt verlor", since the day the black rose lost its last leaf, something I connected to the singer, who passed away way too soon, as in she was the black rose that lost her last leaf/petal...

2 answers on that: (I came across Arjen through Floor. Then found so many others.) This "whish to die" is common to me, since my grandma passed away in 1981. She had become bedridden some 2 years before. She went in peace. She just stopped eating. Starving herself to death. By her own will. It was heartbreaking! I was only 21. Many years later, I found that (at least in the US) has been a way of elders, to leave us. Native americans. To search for a cave. And guided by beloved ones: die in peace. Leaving our physical world. I'm atheist. When I serviced in the german Bundeswehr, we had lessons also in religion. To get to hear: "you are not allowed to take your own life!" Most of disagrred. Allow me to make this joke: we gave him hell on that point. (It was a very serious discussion! About beeing wounded. Having lost extremities, beeing blind. Things like that. We where soldiers. Not a funny conversation. Not at all.) A more light-hearted answer to come. Sorry.

Well - for Egyptians death is actually was not the end but actually the start. And this is what makes this even more astonishing. It is not 'just' music it even fits perfectly into the cultural background. There is a problem though - this is true for queens but not necessarilly for peasants. By the way the picture you showed was the death temple of Hatshepsut. She was a queen but then became a Pharao and transformed herself to be male just because...

I agree, misplace among the angels is marvellous ballade, and Floor's and Tobias's voice are perfectly blended. Listen to it

Und ein (vorher Spanisch sprechender) junger Mann fragte mich: "How can we get to Itzehoe?" W:O:A (Wacken open air) was around the corner! "Just follow me" hab' ich gesagt. "Kennst Du system of a down?" "Ja." "Kennst Du die letzten 2 Alben?".... Wir haben über Musik gesprochen, als würden die jungen Kerle aus Halstenbek kommen. (Ein Dorf in meiner Nähe.) Das werde ich niemals vergessen. Musik verbindet.

There’s another live version in the: the electric castle live and other tales concert. The a in Jansen is pronounced as the a in Darth and not as the a in Vader. The second Goosens was the right one.
