Love our native trees and birds in NZ. I grew up on a few islands around NZ so Pohutukawa has always been my favorite tree ,we barried my grandmother in a Pohutukawa box made by a builder friend and flown by chopper to another part of NZ. For the last few years I've been growing a Pohutukawa in a pot to try growing it in a bonzi stile with the plan that when I die it can be planted out in a nature reserve on top of my ashes when I die hopefully instead of a normal funeral and stuff . It got snapped off by a possum last year because I was trying to grow it a meter tall before spreading it out , so after possum attack I selected three shoots to grow tall and plat together up to about a meter tall. I've got it in a half 44 gallon drum and sheepshit it's pumping along and I keep rubbing off lateral buds to keep the shoots growing tall fast . Got a lime tree in the other half a drum , and a couple self seeded Pohutukawa that came up in my compost I was thinking about trying to keep really small I got them in one letter pots and they only five cm tall but I think I want to grow one over a rock ,I wonder if I should start it now or wait a year then strap it to rock selectively saving some roots .or if it's better to start it off now by making the setup of pot with rock on surface with frame soil around it and just planting the seedlings on top to find their own way for a few years ....I was also thinking about raping the roots of a tree around a marble or cool rock to make a walk stick out of when I'm older . Anyway sorry for rambling, just saying what I'm thinking out loud

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Pohutukawas are strictly outdoor trees only. They thrive in coastal environments and love the wind.
