Started spinning poi when I turned 40 last April. It is very challenging at first but each bit of progress builds skills that allow more growth. The evolution of one’s skill set is a direct reflex of the internal changes that takes place in the body (facia, muscles, nerves, brain, etc) so it is truly a transformative practice.

Oh my gosh this is absolutely awesome! I work in an assisted living facility for elders with dementia. In a regular basis I spin fire the residents, and the immediate joy that enters their usually flat affects us amazing to see! Great documentary, and I look forward to more of your work!

I spin *for them. It's almost always inside, so no fire :)

Awesome! I am really interested in studying the effects of poi on those with early onset dementia....hopefully I will get to it some day soon! For now, one study at at time :)

+Kate Riegle - van West I can say with some sense of accuracy that many if the residents who do not remember where they are from moment to moment remember my spinning even when it's been days since they have even seen me, and they couldn't tell you my name on the best days. I'm "that nice boy with the balls" lol

This was great! I am 59 and I was thinking I was too old to do this. NOT SO! Thank you for inspiring me to go for it.

I'm 40 at the end of June, been spinning poi and various other props for over ten years now - I can't even begin to tell you how it benefits me everyday. It's so great for people of all ages. My mother is in her 60s - hoops and just picked up Buugeng! s-staves. :)

Beautiful I'm in my mid 40s but I play poi maybe western medicine needs scientific proof but anything not traditional helps I know from a mental health standpoint doctors r starting to accept mindfulness meditation but I feel healthier & I believe poi & wish you all the success in your work & research !👍

Aw thank you Adrian! I am so glad you have found poi, and yes also glad that western medicine is starting to accept and promote the efficacy of many "alternative" interventions. We are on the way!

Flow state is magical. I actually reach peak flow states much easier with my contact staff than poi, but I don't think you would want to have elderly people doing contact staff.

I would love to talk to you about this. I work with the older population in the states. I teach yoga and believe this could be a fun addition to what we do.

Hi Vicky! Yes sounds like poi could fit in nicely and I would be happy to chat more. Feel free to email me at kate@spinpoi.com or check out the resources for poi in aged care on www.spinpoi.com/aged-care

this is awesome what poi are you using ? soft ones i hope ! i ve taught a few times and would like to teach older people did you have lesson plans moves that were easier for them ?
@SpinPoi7 жыл бұрын
Yes soft ones! Just filled with rice. I did have a lesson plan...in general, we did lots of one hand work and broke up moves where you have the spin the poi with moves where you have to swing the poi, to give people a break. Just swinging one poi and working on where that poi is in space, and turning / moving the body, is a great start!

Has there been any research on young adults or adolescents?? I am thinking about starting a Poi club at a high school
@SpinPoi5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kassandra...I am so sorry I missed this comment when you originally posted it! Lori Sirs conducted some research on poi and children and adolescents, you can watch a video of her explaining it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3mWinetnZV4bcU I think starting a poi club at a high school is an awesome idea, and if I can support you in any way please don't hesitate to reach out!

this is cool. Great way for our elders. to step dwn to the younger generations of today. Also great way to keep up with health by fun excersise.. me personally wrking out exercise is jus boring n tiring n not just dat makes me feel lik a robot. But over all very positively loving way to keep the young n the elders connected. Becuz let face it, most of the youth in today's society have seem to lose or 4get that we must respect our elders. hehe :D

These sound like a lot of the same effects you get from teaching flow arts to people with autism, TBI or other mental conditions. My friend runs an organization that teaches circus arts to children with Autism and learning disabilities. Maybe a target for your next study?
@SpinPoi5 жыл бұрын
Ah neat! Would love to know more about your friend's organization, what is it called?
