Since 2007, walrus have been hauling out on shore near the Native Village of Point Lay. Point Lay is located in Northwestern Alaska on the shore of the Chukchi Sea. Media and public interest heightens when walruses haul out. Walrus are easily disturbed when on shore and stampede into the water, killing small, young animals.
The Native Village of Point Lay works to protect walrus from human-caused disturbance. Tribal Council President Leo Ferreira III asks the reporters, filmmakers, photographers, and other interested parties to respect the Native Village of Point Lay. He asks that we consider the impact visitors have on the village and the walrus.
Youth at Point Lay Kali School contributed images to this short film.
Edited and produced by Francisco Martinez and Robert Stormo.
