BEGINNERS! Please DO NOT attempt to pre-break (or do too much crazy stuff) for at least your first pair of pointe shoes. You must go into wearing them completely raw and break them in naturally! Then once you have had a few pairs you can develop techniques for breaking them in that work for you, and unless you are dancing at a high level you may not have to pre-break them much at all (because it is likely you won't be performing with a brand new pair of shoes). Naturally breaking them in is the best way to go about it (especially since pointe shoes are so expensive and pre-breaking means they don't last as long), and if later on you find bending them slightly and standing on the box is helpful then go for it!

@@jmsemmett if you're not a beginner you don't really have to, but if you are a begginer you have to go the natural way in order to build strengh and learn how your feet behave in pointe, these pointe shoe hacks are for professionals or senior pointe users because not everybody breaks the Shank the same way, you might even have one foot that breaks higher than the other, also, the jetglue use needs a lot of knowledge of were your shoe dies first or were you need more support, that's why you can't do that without having tones of experience.
@elsyoungman27 жыл бұрын
Try not to do these hacks if you're a beginner (mainly the first one!!) but once you are more comfortable, confident and used to your pointe shoes..... go ahead, don't rush yourself if you are new to pointe shoes!!!!

Question: why don't pointe shoe makers make shoes with some of these life hacks already built in? I realise every dancer and every foot is different, but it seems to me that things like shaving down the base of the sole, removing the satin from the toe and providing additional cross marks to improve grip could help almost everyone? Even principal dancers, who have custom-made shoes, seem to spend loads of time "destroying" their custom-made shoes before they're fit for purpose. Why is this?
@veronika.ballet7 жыл бұрын
JaneyMay99 try Gaynors... 😉
@JaneyMay997 жыл бұрын
dance2felina, thanks. 👍🏻 I realise Gaynors are a little different from this. Perhaps they're an example of the future? But not everyone likes them, do they? It's really just a general question. Pointe shoes haven't changed much (if at all) in decades/centuries, they're very expensive, and yet they don't arrive suitable to dance in immediately and they have a short life. Despite the unique and clever craftsmanship it takes to make pointe shoes, dancers immediately have to rip them apart, bash them, soak them in chemicals and cut bits off them before they are deemed dance worthy. It honestly puzzles me that a clever engineer hasn't worked closely with a foot specialist and a dance physiotherapist to design something much more durable and ready-to-wear, which immediately provides great support to dancers and looks beautiful without dancers having to tear apart a brand new pair of shoes. Imagine a painter buying a brand new paint brush but having to bash it, cut it up and soak it in shellac before usage. 🤣

totally agree!

JaneyMay99 Gaynor Minden has the new technology. super soft, and ready only the matte effect would have to be done. the problem is that the fitting is not always the best, it took me at least 100 pairs of shoes of different brands to get to my perfect pair: repetto la carlotta in 5 1/2 medium. and I still have to cut the shank to 3/4 , step on the box to extend the wings, bang to make quiet, and shave the sole edges... 😥
@ultravioletspirit7 жыл бұрын
JaneyMay99 but I yet have to get a good fitting pair of Gaynors. I think that now that I know what works for me I can bring my repetto and get a good Gaynor that fits.

Hi Dancers! I just wanted to say Thankyou SO SO much for all your support on this video so far. However, I did notice a few comments about when I refer to 'wood' being in a pointe shoe. When I film, it's obviously unscripted and I must have said this mistakenly. When I watched the final version of the video once my videographer had sent it through , I noticed this (along with a few other things) and decided to not get my videographer to edit it out. My content is real, raw & I accidentally said this instead of saying the layers of fabric/glue. Apologies! Honest mistake but thanks again for all of the LOVE you all give me when I upload! Happy dancing ❤❤

Is a 3 quarter shank really a good thing? Isn't that highly dependant on the individual's foot? Also I feel like the last hack is an invitation for getting blisters
@amandanance9197 жыл бұрын
Daph Duck Generally, I've heard that you shouldn't 3 quarter your shoes if you're a beginner because it requires more strength. However, I've heard of many more experienced dancers cutting their shanks because it makes their foot look more archy. I think that as long as you cut it where your arch is, then it will look fine.
@Tintenfischchen7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, almost all teachers and professionals I talked to said that you shouldn't 3 quarter your pointe shoes as a beginner. After a few years of experience, you can try it out and see if it helps you or not.
@poketvenus7 жыл бұрын
Daph Duck most teachers want you to break your shoes in with hard work. cutting the shank makes it easy to achieve that broken in feeling, and does make the shoe look better, so it's common for pros who go through 2 pairs a day to break theirs in through hacks like this as much as possible that way they are clean and new for performances.
@charlotteosgood73907 жыл бұрын
I've been on pointe for a year and recently got shoes with a 3/4 shank, and they've been pretty helpful for me. the first day i used them, my arches were sore because it takes more effort to get up on pointe, but it's easier to fully pointe my toes and walking in demi-pointe is more comfortable than with regular shoes.
@adelaidetisserand95597 жыл бұрын
Also, as for the last hack I pretty much only wear tights in my shoes for performances when it is required and you'll notice that in a lot of professional classes, dancers usually roll their tights up and dance barefoot in their shoes (except for padding if a dancer chooses to use it) and I love the feel of the pointe shoes on my heels. I have never gotten blisters from it except for when my elastics are sewn to close to my Achilles tendon. I don't like the look of professionals wearing their tights like she showed for performances however because it still is noticeable a lot of times. For performances, I wear the tights like normal and wet the back of my heels and apply rosin to the heel of my tights if that makes sense. That always worked with me.

Hi Claudia, I was just wondering- what would the longevity of your shoe be like if you only did 1-2 pointe classes a week (and you applied all these hacks)? I'm only asking because I know with the Royal Ballet you would have had a new shoe/new shoes each day, whereas I can only afford to buy them every so often. How many wears do you think I could get out of a shoe after cutting/shellacing/glueing etc?
@kelseamarie7 жыл бұрын
I don't know how I got to this side of KZbin, I'm not a dancer of any kind.. however, after watching several videos, I'm amazed of the relationship these girls have with their shoes, even if they have them for a short time before they need a new pair. They basically destroy them, but in a way that perfectly enables them to be the best they can. So cool.

Amazing video Claudia!! But i do have one question... (its sort of off topic, but i hope you can answer it) when i do a penché, i always feel a strain in my hip... do you know what this might be caused by and what i can do to relieve the pressure on my hip? Thank you so much xoxo😍❤️

So you spray water to soften the shoe.... then shellack it to harden it..... same area... just look, it is the same area..... I am confused.

And Claudia, what would be very interesting to hear from you is the list of movies about dancing which inspired you and your students. As a lot of dancers love not only dancing but also watching great shows :)

It's always so funny: you buy shoes that are worth around 100 $ to just destroy them before the first used and throw them away within a couple of hours :D

Omg I'm such a big fan! Do you recommend Russian pointes? My studio requires Russian pointes or blochs, whichever is best for our feet.
@daisyw51577 жыл бұрын
Yes Russian pointes are really good especially when you start off en Pointe. I used to have freed for my first pair and my Russian pointes I have now are so much better! good luck

daisydancediva!!!! ! Thank you! My studio does pre pointe which is basically pointe shoes but without wooden shanks so your shank will move easily. I will move up to pointe at the end of summer/fall.

For tip number 8, why do you use water? At my studio we use rubbing alcohol because it dries in 2-4 minutes and keeps it soft so the glue won't reharden
@juliap59826 жыл бұрын
I just got my first pair of point, it’s grishko ones, I don’t think I’m going to cut open it but I’m definitely gonna “break” them on the floor (oh and tiny hacks for ppl that read this comment, u can use the door of ur studio because u really could break the floor if it’s wood or a softer material than the actual shoes). Ur hacks were so helpful, thank u !

Hi! You could put subtitles in Portuguese (Brazil)? I liked very much! Você poderia colocar legenda em português (Brasil)? Gostei muito!

A lot of people say this destroys the shoes. Actually it allows dancers to customize their shoes to fit their exact needs, and it makes them last somewhat longer. Obviously if you are a new dancer, not all of these are necessary for you. These are for dancers that do more extreme dancing like a professional dancer. Also...this helps support them, and make them feel more comfortable. If you've ever put on a pair of pointe shoes, you'd know how uncomfortable they are unless you have padding and those special foot molds, which some dancers do.
@RomyMacias7 жыл бұрын
Claudia Dean, you are very young. Why did you stop dancing? Thank you for your videos!
@bryonybaxter61565 жыл бұрын
the professional career of a ballet dancer tends to be fairly short. as you get older you tend to lose flexibility, injuries tend to occur and it tends to not be a sustainable career so a lot move on to teaching in their early-mid 30s. some people just generally don't want to perform anymore either. however there are some dancers that perform for decades simply.

Hi Claudia! If you have more archy feet can you still 3/4 the shank, or will it compromise the support too much?
