The LAZY way to paint watercolor landscapes

Margot, this is so great for those times when your friends are asking you to paint their vacation photos. I get so confused about how and where to start. Their photos consistently include too much information and your friends will be so unhappy if any of it is left out. Your painting is also terrific because of your magnificent use of the principles of design. so not all of the vacation- photos- turned- to- paintings will come out as well as your villa painting did.

This is so good!! I remember learning the transfer technique back in High School to take my small sketch, scale it up, and transfer it to a big canvas to paint. Such a great way to quickly get to the fun painting part!! :)

@@Pointebrush - I love this landscape painting. The colors you used are very soothing, in my opinion. The process you used to edit, copy, etc., until you had a copy that fit the size of the watercolor paper you used : do you have a video that takes us step by step just through that process? I’d love to see exactly how that is done, and also find out what equipment you use. I’m a fairly recent subscriber, and didn’t see a clip that I thought might address my questions. I love this technique and your workflow, and even though I don't do landscape painting, it gives me a great idea to incorporate that into my work! I create fashion art and I do my sketching in Photoshop or Illustrator and then print my line art very faintly on my watercolor paper because I don't like the mess of pencil marks or smudgy graphite. I figured out a way to print and you can barely see the lines unless I go over them with a pen or paint. This has made my painting so much more effortless. I also use a 3D poser program if I need a really difficult perspective on a fashion pose and it exports that pose to an outline so I can reference it. I can even draw over it using layers which allows me to get the perspective just right. Using tools is not cheating, you still have to be able to come up with the ideas and execute them so that it looks artistic - and you are so inspiring in that regard!! I don't really see tracing as cheating, as you said if it's saves time and frustration it's absolutely worth it. And espacially if it's from a photo and not tracing from another artists work.

... and if you print a gray scale version of the photo on the "draft" setting, you have created a cheat sheet to a value study for your piece, as well as saving ink (though not all photos work well with this; use your print preview to see a sample) 😁

OMG! I’m so glad I watched this video. I LOVE the methodical way you paint instead of throwing water and paint all over like some artists paint. I love what they paint, but I AM A CONTROL FREAK to maximum level and I GET SO STRESSED TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF IT ALL. The way YOU approach a painting is so calming for me. I can’t wait to try this. I love creating art, and I learned with charcoal, pastels and acrylics. I also wanted to learn watercolor because my art instructor is a WONDERFUL watercolorist AND i love her results. But her method of wetting everything and throwing water all over the place and dropping colors everywhere in a frantic manner was so stressful to me that I thought it was just too chaotic for my mind. YOUR method is calming to my mind and I now think I might actually be able to enjoy creating some nice work. THANK YOU! ❤️❤️❤️

Ok here’s an honest question. How do you “lock” it so that your screen doesn’t move around or accidentally zoom out while you’re tracing?

@@Pointebrush you can put your image as the tablet wallpaper and won't zoom. Leave a home tab without icons. Actually I prefer tracing straight from regular spare displays (TV or PC) with a light hand, and since they're not tactile, images don't move or zoom.

@@Pointebrush On iPads, go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided access. Turn it on; it allow you to trace.

@@Pointebrush If nothing happens when Guided Access is activated then triple-click the home button; that will take you to the Guided Access settings screen. You will find a screen of the app you are using. Draw circles on that screen around the areas that you want to disable. I just draw a large rectangle around the whole screen to disable everything. After that, click on options in the lower left corner and deselect the items you want to disable. Make sure you deselect touch and motion; that will disable touch sensitivity and screen rotation. When you are happy with your settings, click on resume to return to the app. To disable Guided Access, just triple-click the home button and then select end in the top left corner.

@@Pointebrush Actually, you don’t need to select any area on the screen; once you deselect touch, the whole screen becomes disabled. And make sure you remember the passcode so that you don’t get stuck on Guided Access.

Do you tell your clients you painted a traced photo?

Nope. In this case they provided me with aerial footage from their drone so the rights of source photo ownership are theirs. If the reference photo doesn’t belong to the client, I either get permission from the original author or make significant changes from the original
