Hello. I’m from Ukraine. Thank you for your review of watercolor supplies. It was very helpful and interesting. It was nice to hear in the video that you are familiar with the Ukrainian brand Rosa Gallery. However, it was unclear why you listed Poland as the manufacturer of this brand. I would appreciate it if you could correct this mistake.

I have always been craftsy since an young age, but thought any type of painting on canvas or paper I was not competent due to discouraging art teachers and the society view on is better science studies and similar to have a decent future. Regarthless, I still loved art and sign myself on a mixed media course for beginners in an adult learning centre, fell in love with watercolours ever since, plus occasionally take workshops in my local arts and crafts shop. I would say this is something I recommend if it is available in your region and possible time wise and economically. Another thing I do, adding to shopping local region supplies, is buy local art supplies as souvenirs when travelling, even if just a brush. Great explanation about the paper, I think is the first time I fully understand the difference between hot press and cold press, I still have lots to learn and this videos are always helpful.

I spent a lot of time researching what brand of pro watercolors I wanted to use/buy. You were a big part of why I chose Daniel Smith. First was that I did NOT want a brand with honey in it .. I am in North Carolina so I was concerned I might have drying issues due to the humidity down here. I am buying a few paints each month. I love the Primatek colors .. those are wonderful :) The sticks are an amazing value in my thinking .. I watched a video with a brand ambassador artist using the sticks and I found that to be a great idea for me. So far, I only have tubes and sticks .. I have not bought any pans yet. I bought Princeton brushes thanks to you too :) Thank you so much for giving us all such great information!!!

This was INCREDIBLY helpful! Thanks! I appreciate that you went into detail about buying what’s available locally. A lot of artists will only promote one brand, which I understand, due to partnership/sponsorship deals. Even though they’re high end products, I often think/wish that they would describe their professional products more objectively, instead of saying, “they’re the best!” or “this is what I like.” While I’m VERY happy with my Maimeri blu paints, and other gear, that I bought in December, it was _very_ expensive because it’s not available locally. I was also getting really bad results with the less expensive pan paints that I bought a few years ago. Although a person wouldn’t be able to get the same results due to differences in pigmentation, granulation and binding etc., if you have tips and tricks to provide to beginners on how to get the best results out of their student grade supplies, and a side by side comparison with the same/similar professional paints, showing what changes in the same painting with different supplies and how/why the results change, that would be VERY helpful to beginner artists I think. Also, if you used the same student level or professional grade paints and compared ‘store brand’/low end non-cotton watercolour paper vs. different qualities of 100% cotton watercolour paper, that would be very useful as well. Without the knowledge of how or why our art isn’t turning out, due to the limitations within the supplies and not talent, it’s much more difficult to progress. Thanks!

I agree, and good paper is far easier and more satisfying to paint on. I wish I could send sheet of Arches to every new painter, just so they could marvel at what a delightful experience it is to paint on in comparison to cheaper paper. It is a little pricier, but it's also expensive to waste a lot of cheap paper because it's too frustrating to work with. I spent a week trying to paint basic leaves unsuccessfully, but when I tried it on Arches they came out wonderful. A video showing the difference would have been very helpful.

Margo, I never think you talk too much. I’m so thankful and ALWAYS appreciate how thorough your videos of teaching are. The way I learn anyone, I tell them I need “specific minor details” type of description style of learning. I am like you, who also appreciates the whole enchilada “what, where, when, how, and why” of information. The explanation as to the why you need or use something with tools the explanation so I can fully understand. Knowledge is key and wisdom, the more I know and understand the wiser I am in what I need to learn in order to be able to produce exactly what I am trying to learn. So keep doing and sharing you Margot! I’m so thankful and grateful.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🧡

Really helpful video! Thank you so much for this information. I would be interested in seeing the best way to fill an empty paint pan. I tend to make a mess and think there has to be an easier way. I am also interested in seeing the process of dipping brushes into water/dirty water when painting. I think there has to be a better way to do it than what I am doing. I tend to contaminate my colors a lot and need a better system.

@Pointebrush4 ай бұрын
Hi Cheryl! Glad it was useful even if you are a more advanced practicer. In terms of your question about color temperatures, one of the oldest tricks is to add white paint to whatever you’re trying to figure out the bias for. It will make it more obvious. Alternatively, if you need a cheat sheet, a printout of the Munsell color wheel should be able to help tremendously.

I've only been a year into watercolors but from the get go I knew I wanted to paint on hot press-- mostly since my style lends itself better to using smooth paper, but also because I dislike the look of cold pressed paper. Also, I love me my mixed media. (I'm big on the comic book look and it's what my style really leans towards, I hate HATE the way my inks/line work look on cold pressed). It was SO much harder starting out, I like to think I dove in on hard mode especially because there's less YTers who paint and teach using hot press but I've gotten used to it now! I love the challenge of painting on it, it's fun and it really does make me pay attention to how much water I'm using. eta: *points at the screen* hey that's me! (about alternatives to glass jars-- my butter fingers appreciate using plastic jars lol)
@wildflower13974 ай бұрын
I would add artist masking tape to the essentials list. If you are swatching and experimenting for the first time, taped off sections are very convenient. Also, taping your paper down can help with buckling and leaves a nice clean border. If you are new, do yourself a favor and buy at least one high-quality paper even though they are more expensive. I didn't think it was that big a deal when I started, but almost everything frustrating became far easier on good quality paper. It's almost an entirely different experience when you are not fighting to control your watercolor on the paper. Here in the US you can get Baohung/MEEDEN Academy paper at reasonable prices, or spoil yourself with Arches. Lastly, I would get some conditioning brush cleaner. If you properly clean your brushes with a good soap, they will last much longer. It is far more expensive to buy replacement brushes than it is to buy soap that protects them. Generals brand is not expensive, does a great job, and lasts for ages. Note: If you are intimidated to paint without sketching in pencil first, get a 2H pencil, because it leaves lighter marks that don't show as much. A few dollars for a pencil and good eraser will save you a lot of trouble. Don't get sucked into buying things you don't need, but do buy the best quality you can afford. :)

Sorry to bother you. Newbie question. Hope this isn't impolite. I'm struggling with pink colors. I've been using this thing from Winsor Newton called Rose Madder. It doesn't blend real well with white, and kind of behaves curiously during layering if I want to use the white of the paper rather than Chinese White. I think it might be a lake pigment issue, and the color is cool for what it is, but I'm not 100% sure as I'm pretty new at this stuff. It could just be that I'm bad at pink. Does M. Graham have a nice lighter color pink for building out my pallet?
@Pointebrush3 ай бұрын
Hi Paul! All questions welcome. So the big problem with rose madder is that it’s extremely fugitive (fades quickly). There are better alternatives but my question to you is what hue (color) are you looking for and what subject are you painting that you need pink for? There are so many pinks out there from vibrant roses to dusty mauves sot further info is needed before I can give you a recommendation :)
@PaulfromChicago3 ай бұрын
@@Pointebrush I'm looking to paint. Florals/ coneflowers. I'd like a pink that would behave, perhaps a bit more normally. I feel like the pigment in the rose madder just kind of behaves a bit more differently than a Winsor Violet (Dioxazine) or a cad red or the m graham cad yellow. And it might just be me. I haven't been painting for more than about 11 weeks. And I'm not going to lie, I don't really know what good is yet. So maybe it's me. But I get the idea that pink is a more fundamental color than is typically realized on the rby chart. I don't know.
