It’s so clear Roland wants to make some kind of galaxy spanning sci-fi epic with some sort of alien galactic civilization…but he’s stuck making earthly disaster movies and just has to figure out how he can cram some kind of galaxy wide implications into them. I got the exact same vibe from those two movies. Man should just make a galaxy-scale disaster movie. Have an evil malevolent force that keeps destroying planets (the logical end-point of other disaster movies if they weren't stopped for a happy ending, lets him do a bunch of miniature disaster movies inside a larger disaster movie) then give the protagonists the job of stopping the disaster force before it reaches Earth.

An "old school crank" means a school crank who is old. The compound adjective "old school" must appear with a hyphen when it's followed by the noun it modifies, as in "old-school crank," otherwise the only logical interpretation is that both "old" and "school" separately modify that noun. The same principle goes for any other compound adjective: A "high school student" actually means a school student who is high.

One absurd thing that I noticed about the movie is how hamfisted it was that the antagonist was an "advanced AI." Like, it not only gave no indication that it was super cunning, but it was actually just incredibly stupid. It had the object permanence skills of a stealth game NPC, and our heroes outwitted it on multiple occasions. My theory is that it wasn't originally meant to be an AI, but during post-production, ChatGPT came out, and they hastily changed the script to get in on the trend.

I love how the Michael Bay's 20th century disastrous disaster film Armaggedon stated the problems with trying to nuke your space problems away. You know, you have to crack it and split it for an explosion to even be remotely effective. And then in Roland Emmerich's even more disastrous disaster film Moonfall, the government attempts to nuke its problems away without explanation. *Armaggedon dunked on Moonfall decades before Moonfall even came out!*
@concept5631 Жыл бұрын
Damn. Imagine being outbrained by *_Michael Bay._*
@fwg1994 Жыл бұрын
And people dunked on Armageddon back in the day for having an unrealistic plot. If I recall, it'd still be the same mass peltering down on the earth, just with vastly more surface area, meaning a lot more of it would burn up in atmosphere, which would significantly heat up the atmosphere, as well as put a lot of dust into the upper atmosphere trapping the heat in better. Not to mention there's probably still a ton of chunks big enough not to burn up entirely, meaning instead of one huge crater, you got several still very big craters. I mean, a lot of real world craters came from something you could hold in your hand, and have comparable blast radii to nukes. So shattering the a big asteroid before its impact would be equivalent to just simultaneously setting off a 100 or so nukes across the planet, even somewhat comparable long term effects making the earth significantly less hospitable. If people didn't die from being cooked alive or being in the blast radius of an impact, then we're looking at a situation theorized to have killed the dinosaurs and generally brought about significant changes to the prevalent lifeforms on earth. If I recall, the better solution would've instead been using the nuke on the surface where it wouldn't break, so that force would instead push it into a new trajectory and cause it to miss the planet entirely. But also its a movie and people want to see nukes blow up big things, so whatever.
@Wfalen Жыл бұрын
I think the crap Armageddon got, was more about NASA actually being part of the production. And then the end result was what it was, and NASA looked like a bunch of fools. During a time when their budget and the publics general feeling for them was at an all time low.
@spinyslasher6586 Жыл бұрын
@@fwg1994 Didn't the movie address that by saying there was a point at which blowing up the asteroid would still cause the debris to hit the Earth, and the entire climax of the movie was making sure the asteroid was blown up before that point?
@Croz89 Жыл бұрын
@@fwg1994Redirection is the best option but you've got to do it a long long time before impact, or it won't move it enough to make a difference. So you've got to detect it years before it hits earth. If you don't have time for that smashing it into tiny pieces with a bomb is probably the best option, yes you will heat up the atmosphere and you might have a few smaller impacts, but it would still be better than doing nothing, especially if you can deflect some of the material away from earth with a big enough explosion.

Halle Barry was actually pretty good in this. It'a not her fault that literally every line of dilogue written for her sounded like it was ripped directly from the trailer. She delivered those hamfisted lines remarkably well imo

I saw this movie last month with my wife because YOU mentioned it in a video and I HAD TO SEE IT. It was absolutely PERFECT for what it was. Fun as hell, batshit crazy, with good CGI. Not every movie has to be an Oscar winner. Some are just a damn good time.

I watched this movie with my friends group after I had to both Pay them $8 each and pay for the tickets to convince them to watch it. Completely empty theatre, tons of snack and the single greatest time I ever had. I laughed so hard at the terrible dialogue and over the top disaster. Absolutely loved it

you brought up a good point about how people would ACTUALLY react to hearing the moon is falling. Majora's Mask was a better representation of how people WOULD react. Some panic, others don't believe it, some are saddened, some are angry, and some just accept it. just a mixed bag of emotions all around and why a 20 year old, low-poly game is better than this blockbuster film.

If only Moonfall's protagonists tried using a small musical instrument to simply rewind time until they could figure it out.

No movie I've ever seen has ever felt as long as this one did, in a kind of incredible way. The first time we thought it was ending soon we paused the movie and it was like 20 minutes in and me and my friend just lost it laughing. About every 10-20 minutes after that there is another scene that I think could be the end and then it just keeps going. Moonfall was definitely one of the movies of all time.

I just stumbled on Moonfall without knowing about it. During the movie, the main thought going through my mind was that this was so similar to 2012 movie. The crazy conspiracy theorist who knew about it, the nonsensical science that requires a huge suspension of disbelief, the story following some people trying to survive the disaster, and it even had the lover of the lead character's ex die so they can be back together as one family. The style of the movie felt so familiar. The same guy who made 2012 had to make Moonfall. Just looked it up, watched a few youtube videos like this, and confirmed it. I like the idea about galaxies colliding. That's exactly the disaster movie I expect to come next.

That was the one huge mistake from 2012: Not making the conspiracy theorist one of the main people! Honestly why did Emmerich felt the need to do that? Not only was it totally unnecessary to have the conspiracy believer, the whole "real" NASA conspiracy could also have been easily cut. I can only assume Emmerich wanted to repeat the whole Area 51 and Roswell-thing from Independence Day, but that made at least some sense in that movie. Samwell could have been a NASA scientist (a specialist for the moon), who realized something weird going on, but nobody believed him and he got ultimately fired. And the EMP-device could have been a "normal" military project that they use out of desperation. No need for the NASA conspiracy (and the conspiracy-members couldn't possibly have known they would need an EMP-bomb, just because they believed the moon-superstructure-story)
