The reason this era is called G1 is because a show called Transformers: Generation 2 exists. It's basically a repackaging of old footage, but with obnoxious CGI transitions. It actually predates Beast Wars by 3 years as the first use of CGI in the franchise.

watched this film at 10 after spending years playing with transformers and never even knowing there was a cartoon. saw it at the local-blockbuster-equivalent, "oh boy a cartoon about my toys!", and the scene of bots being melted down in acid as the dad screamed for his kid to hurry never went away

Also, why I always roll my eyes at takes that "transformers is more grounded stories" when people compare to japanese instalments, as if the franchise wasn't always an out there concept.
