Very well explained. Thank You . I got my plant to re-flower this spring after 2 years. Did not repot for fear of shocking them nor did I add any new soil. Kept it indoors but in bright light. In winter I move them around to a sunny window sill. 15 hours of darkness starting October really helped in promoting the new flowers this spring. Hope this info helps all the pointsettia lovers. A little patience goes a long way.

I don't know about total darkness. I only say that because they say that about Thanksgiving cactus, and I just let them adapt to our living schedule, and they bloom.

Yes, the cactus it actually triggered by cool night temperatures. The Poinsettia is triggered by night length. Although the plants of today are much easier to get to colorup as they are very hybridized and cultivated to do so. As a comercial grower in the past we had perfect control of timing by using black out covers for the plants at night because even turning on the lights at night could throw them off. 👍

If you’re keeping poinsettia for the season only, it is not necessary to give them 16 hrs of darkness. In fact the need normal bright sunlight daily and out of drafty areas.

Too late for me to force redness! Just started learning what to do. My last years poinsettia is healthy but green. Anything I can do now (Dec 7th) ?
@growercoach12 күн бұрын
You can still go through the process as they still look nice when in colour. I would start right away.

Mine for the first time in 3 years has dropped almost all of its leaves im afraid and not sure if I should try to cut it back or not. It’s always dropped leaves but never dropped almost all of them completely off and I just re potted it last month. Any suggestions please
@growercoach2 жыл бұрын
Cutting it back won't help the situation. It has likely developed a root disease. If you could take a photo of the plant and email it to ken@growercoach.com I will have a look and may have some further suggestions.

I feel like you really over complicated this! I keep mind in the kitchen in the window ledge. Guess that works because it gets light & the kitchen is warm. Water it about every 3-4 weeks it turned into a pretty green plant, come November they started turning red hey presto!!
