A quick question regarding the Arcane Collection: Since I'm from Europe and shipping US-EU is extremely expensive, I'd be very interested if there would be a PDF version available - is this planned in any way, a "maybe", or something that I shouldn't expect? Or could there be something done about shipping to Europe? Thank you in advance! I honestly love your content, and have been a fan of the channel for a long time

I had two rats we found in the first sewer dungeon that were really consistently useful in scouting and searching rooms and the like. There was also a bit where these street kids picked the party's pockets but got caught after a rat bit them. Felt pretty cool. I never got to use it before the game ended but I also had a potion of dragon's breath on hand. Making rat flamethrowers would've been useful eventually, I think.

Up until now, I thought all familiars were random animals/magical creatures that you could just find in the wilderness, not spirits from other planes that could change form. Also, after watching this video, the idea of playing as my friend's familiar instead of making my own character because it's my first time playing and I want something simple to play/roleplay with doesn't seem that ridiculous anymore... :)

When I first started DND, I made a teifling cleric/warlock multi class who was once a pirate who survived a shipwreck. My DM, most likely as an inside joke, eventually allowed me to purchase a pet, where I chose the red weasel. I named him Scrabble. You should have seen my face when I watched critical role for the first time. The coincidences were way too on point. I was just a fjord/jester hybrid, which is awfully fitting for them ending up together

I found it kinda funny that most of what you wanted in a familiar is something you can do in Pathfinder 2E. Awakened animal, changing your familiars abilities and form with every long rest. Using it as a spell focus or as a defender. Glad that your brining these options to DnD.

Your Familiar focused wizard reminds me so much of the Pathfinder 1st.ed. Summoner-class. They would get an Eidolon, that grew and gained abilities when you gained levels. Never got around to playing one, but once ran a mission where an Eidolon asked the party to help and rescue their summoner.

So cool they kept that class for pf2e. The customisabiliy of te Eidolon was so much fun. Honestly felt like what animal companions were supposed to be. I believe the NPC I ran had a large Griffin-style Eidolon, but they had the front of an owl, instead of an eagle. In hindsight, very inspired by Won Shi Tong, from the Avatar Spirit Library episode. More than all, it just really encourages players to make their companion a character.

"Where does the idea of Familiars come from?" "The Medieval and Early Modern idea of Witches receiving a demon servant in the form of an animal from the Devil. They would help perform tasks of black magic for the witch in exchange for suckling blood from them from a teat known a witch mark, which is believed to be in the form of a birthmark or wart that won't feel pain. Witch-hunters would torture victims accused of witchcraft with stabbing them with a sharp pin looking for said witch mark."

In my first campaign as a player I played a Barbarian with the Ritual Caster feat. He had a pet familiar and the joke was that he had a small spell book and believed himself to be a wizard, but really it was the Cat familiar that was the brains of the operation casting his spells for him. My Barbarians Cat (named speckle) was extremely relevant to the plot. Eventually my barbarian died (and lost the spell book in the process) and my backup character adopted the cat to continue its legacy. We even eventually found a way to let it talk. Speckle the cat eventually even became a minor antagonist. It was awesome.

I have a 7 yr old that wants to play DnD. I am a new DM, so my main group is playing Dragon of Icespire Peak. I am going to run the same for her. It suggested sidekicks. Lo and behold, when making a mini for her character on Hero Forge, she wanted a cat and a dog as her extras. She is a Paladin that worships Eldath, the goddess of peace. Her backstory has her family being offed somehow (mystery) as she suggested, so her and her pets were out gathering firewood when it happened. Her character got back and saw that they were unalived. She cried and prayed and her goddess asked her to take an Oath of Devotion to her family (currently just her pers) to give her the power to find out what happened. She then cast the Awaken spell on her pets. Now she has a sidekick in each to take on the campaign! TL;DR I had a similar idea for the awakened animals and am happy to not be alone.

Reminds me of some old D&D novels. There was a Dragonlance about a wizard trying to solve the mystery of this plague that turned everyone to stone and gave the victims snake hair that yelled out the main character’s name when they died. He had a snarky seagull as his familiar. It was sad when he took a shot meant for the wizard and even worse when the resulting magical backlash came right in the middle of the fight with the villain. The other story was connected to a book called King Pinch and followed a sorceress trying to summon a familiar while using unorthodox ingredients like cheap booze. She winds up with a halfling who takes advantage of her drunkenness and her unfamiliarity with the spell to get some free food and lodging. When the spell finally does work and summons another halfling, she’s both ecstatic and then horrified when she finds out that she more or less kidnapped the poor fellow from the other side of the continent when he was right in the middle of having dinner.

I have two characters (so far) that use familiars. One is a Drake Warden that has (gasp) a tiny Dragon, pretty standard stuff honestly. The other (and the one I'm more excited about) is a Shadowmancer that casts through their Shadow. As in, their shadow is a Shadow that can act somewhat freely and manipulate the world near him (think similar to Dr. Facilier).

A game I payed a LONG time ago (like, the late 90s) had a perk for a wizard that took a familiar, ripped it's soul out and replaced it with a demon, making it kind of grossly powerful for a familiar. Dude had a ferret demon familiar that he referred to as the fuzzy missile in combat, all teeth, claws and spiky fur. It was a silly game, but that familiar was a delightful lil ass, and we all side-eyed the wizard. Good times. Heh

I've dealt with the stuff that's available online, and stuff other people is shared with me. that being said as soon as I finish your video, I open the link and I'm deciding how much I'm going to spend in your store. You've been an amazing addition to the D&D community, in fact my first time as DM was running the adventure you released during Kraken week (which three separate groups of players have absolutely loved) and I'm happy to support you and all that you do.

I would have bought the codex... if it wasn't for those horrendous shipping fees. 50$ to ship in Europe. Even you Pointy who lives there would have to pay those 80$ to get your own book. No way I'd pay 167% more just for shipping. I've paid less to send several heavier books from Japan.

Home brewed a circle of drakes Druid, at lvl 6 I let them use a wild shape or spell slot to summon a faerie dragon familiar. Works out splendidly giving a Druid some ways to use illusion magic that they normally miss out on. Plus a familiar that can throw down a faerie fire? Yes please.

I've ran a dnd Session at one Convention in Octobre and took an extra Player into the Game. I had only six prepared Characters with me so he played the speaking familiar of the Warlock Character. Turock the tucan became the leader of the adventuring group in the sewers of Baldur's Gate xD

THE WIZARD/FAMILIAR SCHOOL IS AMAZING!!! You created a great way to have a Pokémon campaign, complete with power up mechanics like Mega/Dynamax when the familiar gets empowered and switching in different pokémon when you transform them!! 👀 I can’t wait to play a campaign in that world. You’re a genius!

I just want to let you know that Eagar might be the cutest creation you have ever made on this channel (and you have had a lot of cute characters) but I want to bury my face in his fluff, allergies be damned. The hat, the clock, the purple vial, it's so incredible! Also preordered the book, can't wait to see it. Love your art so even if I never get a chance to use any, it will totally be worth it to just be able to appreciate it as a piece of art.

Im playing a Monk (mercy lvl 11) and Cleric (life 5) as a battlefield medic and I ended grabbing the Eldritch Adept feat because pact of the chain is now a lvl 1 warlock invocation and having familiar sounded fun and expands the list. Went with a skeleton and I quick out found how stupidity useful the skeleton is. Its medium size creature with hands. That means it can use the healers Kit, administer potions to fallen allies, be a conduit for touch based healing spells, and it can use magic weapons/armor (if your DM allows it). In theory if I get access to the spell flock of familiars, They all could operate a ballista or cannon together and could forgo one of my attacks to launch a cannon or ballista shot once per turn.

I actually do have a problem with the backstory example on the species segment, that being... You got me Pointy Hat you got me! Right in the feels you got me! You frickin Luxrayed me!!! The Luxray sacrificeing itself to keep Sorrel warm during a snow storm in "Pokémon I Choose You" hit me like a cannonball to the heart and soul, and you just did the same thing with Eger.

I honestly see a familiar being a great way for a DMPC to be introduced, in which they can give some say to the party and keep them on the right track without being a mary sue superhero like most DMPCs become.

Thank you for this video, I'm working on a comic right now and as a Druid main I *REALLY* lean into that fantasy of having animal friends helping with the adventure. The protagonist also makes friends with all three of the wizard's familiars, and gives them the names Fidget, Gidget, and Gadget since only the wizard can know their True Names. One of the thoughts I had of boosting familiar use was expanding on BG3's modifcations for familiars, and allowing the primary familiar to level up with the caster. Adjusting the stat blocks and attack damage from a lv 1 1(stabbing)+1d4(poison) to 1d4(stabbing)+1d8(poison) at like lv 4 or something. The caster can create a stronger materialization by using higher spell slots, or with ritual casting default back to the lv 1 iteration.

The adjusted function would also apply to any class that uses familiars. Druids, Warlocks, Wizards, Sorcerers, Rangers, errybody gets the chance to level up their magical buddy as they get stronger spell slots.

The only thing I would suggest is allowing people to pick the color of their sweatshirt and the type of hat they get in their bundle. Me personally, I like the dark one, but I want a white sweatshirt lol and I know there’s a lot of people that are probably like me that like the mix.😂 And I absolutely love this code, I am happy that you’re giving the sub classes for free, but I’m definitely still going to buy the official hardcover version to support you as well as having all that lovely art. I’ve never been able to actually support through Patreon so this is something I can definitely do. Hopefully I can get it at some point.😊

When you were talking about the awakened familiar story i immediately thought of a familiar trained to be am expert swordsman to protect their master. Who then witnesses their masters death. And now they find they can use some of the residual magic of their master to materialise the memories of their master to assist them in combat (echo knight fighter) With this knowledge the go forth finding a way to bring their master back and become a sword so powerful no blade will ever get near their master again.
