Hi, die-hard artificer fan here. I think artificer and bloodhunter are literally the only two classes I've played in D&D for three years. Much as Hat's subclass is a nice solution, I do want to give a suggestion to all my other artificer friends. Holy shit, play pathfinder. I didn't really jump on the bandwagon when everyone boycotted 5e a few years ago, but a friend group finally convinced me to try the system. I cannot believe what a better job of evoking the particular *vibe* of an artificer it does. Not to mention, it's split up into multiple classes, so each of those particular vibes can focus in a lot harder on the actual fantasy of the class.

Your take on random tables is funny to me. I've played in multiple games where most of everything that happened in the game was cooperatively created via the use of random tables like the Game Master Emulator, and they are by far the best games I've played in. Watching the narrative emerge in front of you, building it together, with nobody being sure where things are going is - to me - the best thing about RPGs.

Also the players love throwing my plans into the wind. Wanted them to go on a nice adventure helping the towns but now they are going around trying to be good but actually committing a bunch of crimes to try clear their names leading to larger and larger bounty on there heads for multiple murders of high ranking inderviduals (there has been 3 chances for them to clear there names that have been obvious but all 3 times they just went the completely other direction)

The reason I will continue to use the term race instead of species is simple; "race" gives a humanizing aspect to it, while "species" is scientific onlooker at best and blatant, flagrant disdain at worst. How so, you may ask? I call it "The Goblin Theorem" "The goblin race" sounds like a collective of cultured humanoids that can integrate into civilized society and are not inherently evil. "The goblin species" sounds like monsters that act on instinct and probably belongs to the universe of Goblin Slayer or something adjacent.

I am playing a bioengineer that has almost exactly the same backstory as Orla! She´s a reflavoured circle of stars druid though, the group I play her with doesnt allow homebrew or third party content... But oh my god, how much I´d love to play her with this subclass!

As someone who's relatively new to the hobby, does anyone have any advice on which books I should own? Ik the 2024 PHB and I want the new monster manual but I was wondering if there's anything else important. ALSO, Artificers have always seemed interesting to me but never directly compelling, not sure if that makes sense

I'm just about the most conservative person I know, and I don't have an issue with session zero. I don't want players looking to play out romantic bedroom scenes at my table. I don't want to think about goblin babies and what happens to them when their goblin mommy and daddy get killed for slinging rocks and arrows at us. And in campaigns containing slaves, I don't need to describe or to have described to me how the evil king disciplines his slaves. Session zero, and having lines and veils set before starting a game, isn't a political thing. Outside of the idea that politics is the way different people with different ideas and mentalities get along in society.

I once had an idea for a character based on several motives from several games, books and manga, but I couldn't finalize it because the game never took place. Explaining: First, the history of the item my character had and then the history of my character There was once a Lich who ruled a certain region, from time to time a group of heroes came to him to defeat him but none of them succeeded, he was intelligent enough to know that no one lasts forever and sooner or later someone will kill him, but he wanted his the power lasted forever, even without him. For this purpose, he created a helmet that had several special properties In appearance the helmet was part crown, part half-closed helmet with a slit for the eyes and mouth, but it was impossible to see the face of the wearer of the helmet, only darkness and two glowing red eyes ((The Lich was a bit edgy) in appearance it closely resembled the King's Helmet of Domination Lich or Overlord's helmet from Overlord) the second property of the helmet was that the person who grabbed the helmet after removing it from the previous owner's head felt an irresistible temptation to put it on (something like what happened to people holding the Ring of Power from The Lord of the Rings) the third feature was the change of character of the wearer, but much more extreme than the similar helmet known from the game Baldur's Gate 1 (where the lawful good became the lawful evil after putting on the helmet, here the Lawful Good turned into the Chaotic Evil) another feature was that the helmet could not be removed while the wearer was alive the last two were presence and modulation The modulation made the voice deeper and darker, as if demonic (remember, Lich was Edgy :D) The presence makes people looking at the owner of the helmet see only evil in him, and the creatures that originally served the previous "Lord of Darkness" immediately wanted to serve the new one. So, write down and paint. The Lich wanted to corrupt his conqueror and his conqueror, etc., and each successor to the throne would be stronger than his predecessor. he just didn't predict one thing At this moment, my character enters the scene, a Warrior who served as "Boromir" in his original team. A chaotic evil warrior who from the very beginning wanted to betray the team after defeating the current "Dark Lord" in order to take all the credit and grab all the treasures. Fortunately or unfortunately for him, the team mostly died while traversing the evil lair, and the holy Paladin died from wounds moments later. after the final blow, my hero was left alone and of course he took the helmet and put it on, and so now we have a Lawful Good warrior, even a knight on a white horse, but appearance and appearance of evil incarnate a man who would help the old woman cross the streets and carry her shopping, but the old woman would probably have a heart attack if she saw and heard him, and the guards of every city, seeing him, would immediately draw their weapons, thinking that he was invading that city. A hero who would head towards the village with his team but would find ruins and forces of goblins, kobolds or other creatures who, bragging about their conquest, would expect praise from my hero :D

Not going to lie, CR and difficulty is too easy for most people. Meanwhile it's way too hard for my party. We've had two TPKs to wolves. I had a 3pk from three shrubberies and a tree. Five people at the table, three of us have acted as DM for different campaigns, and they're all incredibly difficult. This may or may not be due to the two that haven't acted as DM having made subpar characters and subpar decisions. Like when the one used thunderclap to attack wolves.. Wolves that weren't based with her, but were gnawing on another character's leg.

Honestly I'm underwhelmed by Armorer. You're likely to be investing in INT, so you're only really able to use the weapons built into your armor, and they just don't scale that great, and leave you out of luck should you run into something with immunity/resistance to the damage type. Silence kills the thunder gauntlets, and while Lightning isn't the most commonly resisted/immune damage type, it does come up. The Guardian armor's defensive field is just inherently worse than Artillerist's protector mode. the only draw to armorer really is that you get heavy armor proficiency, and ignore the strength requirements, but there are ways to mitigate the AC difference between medium and heavy armor. I play a Battle Smith who uses Mounted Combatant, and rides around on his Steel Defender while using a magic lance. He gets to use his INT to hit stuff, so he doesn't have to split his stat investment, and he can pick up and use any magic weapon he wants. His base AC is 21, with it hitting 22 when the defender uses the spell storing item to cast Warding Bond, PLUS he becomes resistant to all damage, PLUS, the Defender gives disadvantage to one attack, PLUS he can still cast shield to make his AC 27. if I could make changes to Armorer I'd say the gauntlets/launcher are your choice of energy damage (kind of like the path of Giants barb), the defensive field should not have a limited number of uses, and the Gauntlet's effect of giving disadvantage to hit things other than you should apply to everything within 10ft of you, not just the target you're hitting. Also, give them back the shield spell (they had it in testing, but took it away, and imo that sucks).

17:40 I really don't get why so many people just hate on alignment. I've played D&D since AD&D 2nd Edition and I've never seen anyone take alignment as a 'hard and fast' rule. It's always been treated as more of the character's general 'vibe'. It's absolutely possible for a character to act out of line with their alignment if the action is justifiable. Alignment is also more of a reminder to the player of who their character is. Without it, it's easier for players to metagame and just act in whatever their best interest is, rather than what their character would do in the situation. In that regard, yes it is restrictive as it seeks to make the player aware that their omniscience of the game and it's mechanics do not extend to the player. As far as paladins go, call me a purist, call me an elitist, call me a gatekeeper, but I do absolutely live in the camp where paladins are always Lawful Good. That is their entire thing. A paladin is a holy-powered, righteous, spell-slinging knight devout in their faith. Want to play a paladin of a dark god or somesuch? That's a Dark Knight/Death Knight/etc. (and there's a reason most rules don't include ways to play this kind of bad guy). Want to play a paladin of nature? That's a druid or ranger. I think somewhere along the line, D&D got really, really generic whereas it used to draw a very clear picture of a fantasy world. It feels more like GURPS these days.

9:06 Spell Storing Item is actually 2x intelligence times per stored spell (you store spells at the end of long rest, so assuming a 20 int, 10 free casts per long rest). hypothetically this is how you would create a gun, since you can slap 10 castings of Catapult, (or depending on your subclass, Magic Missile, Thunderwave, Shatter, or Scorching Ray) on a piece of lead pipe. It'd use your casting modifier, and anyone can just pick it up and use it (RAW this means you could pass it to your Steel Defender/Homunculus servant and command them to use it with your bonus action, essentially casting a 1st-2nd level spell as a bonus action 10 times a day).

Thayan wizards regularly employ the undead for cheap labor, automatons are basically the same thing minus the moral quandary of having to dig up someone's grandpa. if you have no issue with golems, modrons, skeletons, familiars, and animated armors, then there's nothing wrong with automatons.

I just want that new DMs guide. I'm moving back home and there's interest in getting a D&D game going. I'm gonna need that book. 😂 Edit: I will say, I'd have rather seen "race" replaced with "people", and tend to refer to them that way in my own musings. Also, I can see the moving of ability score adjustments as a move from score a whole people a certain way, instead to reflecting the unique weirdness inherent in someome who'd willing leave the people they've always known to tackle the unknown (and at times quite _deadly_ ) outside world. I'm going to get this book, but I think we'll break our years long hiatus from the game with the OG 5e, and once we've "found our sea legs" again, give this one a go. I'm more worried about a good story being told and a good time being had than I am the daggum ruleset. And a soldier that leaves that to become a wizard isn't likely going to maintain the routines needed to maintain being stronger than the typical wizard (even adventuring ones), so that seems a bit dumb, but whatever. I doubt anyone on the dev team has experience in that regard (obviously not the wizard part), so I'm not surprised.

I love this, though I'm going to rename it Biomancer. (Sorry Pointy) There is a guild in Ravnica called the Simic that are literally all about this, and they go further, creating hybrid species (Simic Hybrid) and fabricating living chimera creatures with enhanced abilities to serve them. As a fan of D&D and MTG Biomancers slot into canon for my brain. I think it would be cool to riff on this and see if I can push it a little darker and feature self experimentation where the subclass is about splicing animal upgrades into their own form, like a Simic Hybrid species but really push the options. Really powerful options could be temporary transformations and more mundane ones could become permanent if so chosen. Like merging Witcher mutations, with Beast Boy/Ben10 and mad scientist vibes.

Alchemist is such a weirdly designed subclass to me, like why not give them a special Infusion similar to Replicate Magic Item that let's you make potions? You get access to stronger potions as you level up and your features could be themed around enhancing their effects, mixing different potions together or granting them bonus effects.

So my archfey warlock and their party tricked their patron, that being the dark queen, into giving them an overpowered item without consequences, but the problem was that the way the party gets into the feywild is through the warlock’s abdomen, so when he pissed off his patron, she kinda turned him inside out… I had to create a new character.
