Oh my god, same. The one kind of game I've always wanted to play was one where you play as a pokemon and kind of just fuck around in the wild. And yet there are *none*. Every fangame wants to copy the style of the mainlines. Every TTRPG adaptation wants to try and emulate the way the core games work instead of doing their own thing. It's really bizarre considering how many furries there are that would totally be into that for...more nefarious reasons than the normal fans. @Skimmer9512 жыл бұрын
The trainer fighting with their companion theme is actually pretty prevalent in the pokemon manga, where a lot of the fights involves the trainers running with the pokemon as they tarversed the terrain as th ebattle continued and pokeball throwing was very important as you needed a lot of power to switch or get the pokemon into a good position and a lot of the different protagonists had different way to engage in the fights and throw their pokeballs. Also, the spin off games pokemon mystery dungeon is also really easy to adopt into dnd as it is literally into exploring and adventuring, as the pokemon themselves. They create teams even. Ive been tempted for so long to make a dnd campaign based on mystery dungeon, explorers in particular as the guild focused narrative is easy to form a narrative around.

To me, there's two ways to start a Pokémon D&D campaign: a) do like Ash and have a small, but dedicated, team of Pokémon (hard limit of 6, or maybe some kinda point-buy system to discourage having a whole team of Legendaries or something) or b) cut out the middleman and just do a Mystery Dungeon-style campaign where the players ARE the Pokémon. I guess, if you had a really ambitious DM who really wanted to go full Psycho Mode, you could take the rarely used Plan C and do a Réburst campaign where you take on the *power* of a Pokémon and still do the fighting that way, but that would require a total overhaul of the class system and probably make everyone some form of magic user or magic/martial hybrid; there's also Pokémon Ranger, I guess, but that's a different thing. Fighting side-by-side WITH Pokémon, though, is a new one.

I liked it but it's too..... vanilla. I mean mechanically specifically. None of the combat flowed well, the base DnD mechanics just don't suit a game based around pokemon. It inspired me! If you want to play your own game, I have the solution for you! Just take the classic pokemon games and use it in the dnd system. Four moves, an ability and they have the initiative not the pc. It's amazing how smooth it all works together because the moves have to do different things than they do in game involving the 3d space like knockback, fall damage and area denial. Then you twist it up even more and take anime and manga rules, so pokemon don't JUST evolve through a certain method.
@elizabethchambers9137 Жыл бұрын
@@iBloodxHunter Yeah, I can see why you think it's too vanilla. I like the way they do it, but to each their own. In your system idea, how would you run accuracy? For those who want a bit more mechanics for getting wild monsters, without having it being a complete pokemon campaign, might i have a suggestion for a good pokemon trainer-esk class? The kickstarter book, Heliana's guide to monster hunting has a class that's basically a pokemon trainer called the "Tamer", that basically allows you to capture creatures in dnd, and train/fight with them. heck you even carry them around in what's called a vessel. you can fight along them and train them and make them stronger It's very interesting, but be warned, it's definitly not a beginners class, and it has a bunch of limits on type of creatues, what the creatures can and can't do, and how many you can have at any given time. So if the appeal of catching creatures appeals to you, might i suggest the tamer (or you can play the pokemon fan rpg...)
@Shalakor2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, tons of people have takes on how to do a beast mastery focused class, but Pointy Hat's here is a really cool middle ground on beefing up and combining Sidekicks and Companions concepts in a way that seems like it'd strike just the right balance of involvement with simplified action economy and letting the PCs be the main drivers of the campaign, while also not falling completely to the background.
@Crazor20002 жыл бұрын
@@Shalakor true, but i also like the tamer, since it's pretty indept and while the process is not as simple as pointy hats version, it does offer really interesting mechanics for fighting with your beast, like allowing self spells to be cast on the monster, swapping places, etc. that and you can actually tame creatures you find in the wild

I love that the way to make pokemon more like dnd was to make it more like digimon.

I guess someone else have already mentioned 'Eldermon' from Roll4Combat/Battlezoo. I REALLY love how you have taken a different focus than them. The focused more on the Collection aspect of it.

I’ve actually thought about running a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon style game, where my players are the Pokémon fighting Pokémon

You don't need to do this now but when are you going to update the homebrew stat blocks you made on your vampire video? Also balanced mystics would be pretty cool.

I always thought about the possibility to make a Pokémon version to a classical table RPG (D&D) and how to do it possible! I must say, your way of approach is simple, but effective and seems to mix well with both universes (D&D/Pokémon). For something to start, it looks perfect!! So congrats mate!!! Of course, need some tweaks here and there and the system can be a little more robust for the partners but still good. Love your videos man and congrats on your 100k!!!! Side note: I love your new Pokémon variants!!! Specially Noctowl!

This is awesome. My current campaign is headed to an uncharted island filled with giant monsters and this is a perfect addition as hunting partners they can find and train there. Thank you for taking the time to make this.

Types are easy just add vulnerabilities and resistances based on the type.
@Jw875632 жыл бұрын
Not every Pokémon type fits in with dnd damage types. What would water or grass type be, for example? Converting Pokémon to 5e is not an easy thing to do.
@Aurora_Lightbringer2 жыл бұрын
If you were going to do it as a collection type deal, you'd have a transfiguration spell which non-magic characters can somehow do that can only be done during a short or long rest, which replaces the companions abilities and appearance.
@eviltrollface6472 жыл бұрын
You should make a D&D campaign based on a Pokemon fangame. Pokemon Wack is one of my favorites. Its story doesn't start off that well, but its quality improves over time and gets much better after you beat the Elite Four (which is only like 40% of the way through the game). The type chart is a bit complicated though.

I was literally worldbuiding a pokemon world like this for a while where everyone only has one partner, being inspired by other things like digimon and dnd, and maybe one day making it into a web comic. This was very inspiring and my original ideas align with yours in so many ways, thank you for making this video

Congrats on 100k!!! I think you have some pretty cool ideas here. Focusing on the threat that wild pokémon pose to humans as well as the bonds that PCs form with their pokémon are also IMO the two most important things to cover when translating Pokémon to a more narrative focused medium. That being said, there is in fact a very nice unofficial Pokémon TTRPG that runs on Storyteller called Pokérole, and I cannot stress enough how blown away I was by its rules, I highly recommend it, it's so good at translating the narrative fantasy of being a pokémon trainer, and it's completely free. I feel like playing a dedicated RPG based on Pokémon would be preferable than trying to implement it into D&D, and I say this as someone who absolutely loves D&D. However I think it's important for people to try more games instead of trying to dress the same game up in different costumes.

I actually really like the plant pokemon you showed in ur video, the evolution of ultrigaria (dont know its english name) I had it in my party when I played pokemon lets go and got suprisingly attached. Its not my ultimate favourite (that goes to like multiple of the dog pokemon, there can never be enough dog pokemon) but it definetly has a special place in my heart :)

This idea is really cool and I’m looking forward to the video with the stories from this campaign. Also, congrats on 100k. Also also, I know you said Pokémon types would be a very difficult thing to dive into, but how about just playing around with existing dnd damage types and giving every Pokémon two damage types they can deal and one or two resistances, and theming them around the theme of the individual Pokémon? I feel that could be made pretty simple but add a ton of flavor to the game.

Interesting...I actually created rules where you can play AS a Pokémon in Pathfinder. Even managed to try out a Decidueye Ranger for a friend's Ravenloft campaign. (He...uh...was pitying me because my Dwarf Paladin was getting craptastic rolls.)

Gotta be honest, Mr. Hat, it probably doesn't matter what you upload to your channel, I will watch it. I have watched a lot of dnd KZbinrs and am very particular about who I follow and who's content I watch. Your videos are top notch entertainment in this sphere. Your personality is magnetic, your jokes are funny, your content is solid and well laid out, and your creative works are fantastic. Your growth in these 7 months is well deserved.

By having each character have a single monster and doing away with the pokeballs, you can pretty easily flavor this concept to any monster fighting series you like. Digimon, Medabots, etc.

I mean, you could "almost" hand a PC a creature stat block with a pokemon name attached, and you "almost" have a pokemon mod for D&D without doing anything beyond that.... Obviously, what would define a good experience would be the right creature stat blocks with awesome abilities to use in combat, aka pokemon moves.

Interestingly, a friend and I have been working on our own dnd pokemon crossover but more focused on the already DnD-esque Pokemon Mystery Dungeon spinoff series. We've used a bit of Pokemon 5e (which sadly is no longer available) but now we're just working on it from scratch. In fact just recently we've brought in DnD classes for more combat options. I'm playing a Torchic Psi Warrior Fighter named Kagu.

I'm also working on a PCs-are-Pokemon system. Let me know if you're interested in comparing notes.
@323starlight2 жыл бұрын
@@461weavile sounds good. Most of what my friend made was mostly tailor made for specific PCs. For example, my PC is a Torchic who, thanks to being raised by a Gardevoir, has developed some psionic powers.

Aaaa I’m so glad you made a the partner system free to access - I basically have an addiction of giving my characters monster/animal/etc buddies that are an important part of their backstory (probably of which was caused by me loving Pokémon from a very young age) but have never really felt like the way D&D tends to handle pets or familiars really fit, so to see a system like this emerge is super exciting!! Can’t wait to try it out in one of my campaigns!! :D
