Pokémon Blue: 99 item stack glitch and its applications

Gen I is so awesome, even having more than 99 items can cause it to break. Here's a detailed analysis on the 99 item stack glitch, which turned out to be more useful and easy to pull off than everyone originally expected.

The "warp with Master Balls" effect was also previously discovered, but was only performed using the Yami Shop glitch:

Given that the glitch does not require actually buying the items in a mart, all of the effects in the video can be caused as early as you can get a stack of 99 items of a proper kind (so possibly even in Viridian City).

The zzazz glitch I found an interesting glitch on Pokemon red! If you do the zzazz glitch with a special stat of 255, let two Pokemon die of poison go heal, and a bunch of glitchy nonsense will appear on your screen! :D pls try this

Ass Ass Mc Asserson To the right, it's a world shifted up by two blocks without anybody else. Left is just a place with the map borders, like a black void or grass. Downwards, the same thing unless you reach glitch city. Upwards just leads you directly to glitch city.

Hey, I don't have a copy of RBY on hand at the moment, but hypothetically, could you use the "invisible PC" in that hotel? You know, the one where it has the Pokemon Centre's layout and no PC, but didn't take the PC out entirely so you can still use it. If you had the sprite of someone in the hotel on-screen when using that PC, surely it could make that FF disappear...? Of course, it might not be possible to get someone visible while using that PC, in which case ignore me.

A normal player knows about missingno, you really think they wouldn't think "huh what happens if i drop 2 then encounter missingno" then go "huh wonder what happens if i drop these 255 items i have" then "huh wonder what happens if i use an npc (like the scientist who asks for a fossil)" then "huh i wonder what would happen if i fly to cerulean, go to the top right corner before the grass, throw 254 items then switch with the first nugget" then goes "huh neat im back to cerulean, what happens if i take a step" then that last one repeats until 8f appears. Actually the games quite well programmed, no random player would have that much money and have an item in the last slot. It's hardly an obvious glitch. Almost none of them are, but if you chain them together you can do some pretty nasty damage.

Hm, didn't Final Fantasy 1 have the exact same bug? If you can't change the map connection byte from FF, maybe you can change the bytes before it to xx 63 so it will get skipped.

I think ended up accidentally getting the glitch a while back when i was mass buying some form of Pokeball or Potion, and i ended up getting trapped by some glitch tiles, and when i saved and restarted thinking it wouldn't go wrong (i was like, 6-8yrs old with no glitch experience) i stayed trapped and had to start a new game

From my experiments, if you buy normal Poke Balls in a Poke Mart, you are likely to change the width of the map in blocks (initially both the height and the width is 4 for a Poke Mart). Haven't looked into this extensively, but I suppose that would cause the game to load the map data wrongly, hence messing up the collision checks. Edit: I replied too early, he talked about exactly this at 5:57 XD

Through normal means this glitch would be impossible, it's hardly obvious, no one would have 99 items before beating Brock. One glitch leads to another I suppose.

You just need to have fewer than 8 badges. Could easily happen in the late game.

Well he made a point to skip Brock, and the more badges you got the more FFs which would prevent much memory from being corrupted.

I'm no expert, but I doubt that's how that works. I'm sure it's probably using a single byte for all 8 gym badges, which means having all 8 would be 11111111, so missing ANY gym badge would make it possible

Well in the video there was a part about the less badges one had the more memory locations would be open, so it seems like each one would affect the amount of lines of code the glitch goes through before hitting an FF terminator. In that case none would be ideal since it'd let one edit more information.

No, all they said was that having _all_ the badges is problematic. There's no difference between having 0 and 7 badges for the purposes of this glitch. Coolway was right about how badges are stored, IIRC.

Is this possibly an emulator issue? Seems odd that the game wouldn't initialize inventory slots with the relevant FF bytes seeing as that actually stops this glitch entirely, but I know there have been issues before where hardware and emulators initialized values differently. Granted this is Gen 1, where debugging just wasn't a thing that happened, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is doable on cartridge as well.

At initialization the game explicitly sets the entire WRAM to 0x00, so it's not an emulator issue. Different initializations usually happen with the SRAM.
