Also, "became a friend" is INCREDIBLY ominous and that sounds like the perfect inspiration for a creepypasta.

Another unique message that wasn't shown in the video: In Explorers of Sky, alongside the Oren Berry Lookalike Item, there is also the "Reviser Seed" item, which revives the user, plays out a small cutscene where the user questions with the narrator over the misspelling, and then faints again - The death message text shows " burst into spontaneous laughter and fainted!"

In short these are the requirements to get Dusts A mission marked with ??? reward can award an Egg or a Pokémon instead, or the Pokémon's ★1 exclusive item if it's rank ★5 or higher. If the Pokémon or outlaw in question has no ★1 item, the player will be instead awarded a type Dust for one of its types (which is the only way to obtain these items). Most Pokemon lack a 1-star item so it's not that rare to receive one once you know what to look for. Silks are found in end-game dungeons, for example the normal type one is in Zero Isle East.

Interestingly enough, I actually recently was able to get the "was deleted for the sake of an event" message in a ROM hack of Explorers of Sky that lets you control all Pokemon in your party. It works by switching the leader every turn, which means you can have a client Pokemon become the leader. If you have the client talk to the Pokemon that warps it out, you will lose and this message will be displayed as the reason.

15:13 technically the cpu mons will toss at you the negative equipment items, like the hunger scarf or the always miss glasses back at you if you first toss it at them and they catch it. so that technically is an used behaviour (if you cannot catch it - being your equip slot is used) that thrown item damages you.

These descriptions of your Pokemon's defeat is the closest a Pokemon game will ever get to a Waxworks (1992) game over. "Fainted after poison spread" might as well be "Suddenly the air is filled with noxious fumes..." We need PokeRogue but for Mystery Dungeon, where you just choose a couple starters and go through a series of levels, add permadeath and a more vivid description of how your Pokemon died. That would scratch my "bad ending" itch

I think I get why "became a friend" exists lol they reused this code during development and had EVERY Pokemon respond in a debug message or on the screen with what happened to them. Someone is invited to your party? They get the unique message on screen. The script for it was probably optimized out to accept a generic target instead of using the player's name, but the array with all the lines is in the final build.

Les be real for a sec: Bide's message is also super rare to have occur in "natural" gameplay on account of how fucking nonfunctional that move is in this franchise It's already bad in main-line Pokemon because you can just burn items and status moves while waiting it out, but here it's only 1 tile range + the user can't even turn to redirect the damage to another tile, so you can just scoot to the side and keep pulverizing the poor critter with no consequence

Fun fact: Explosion/Self Destruct traps always deal half of your current HP to the party leader, and a flat 40 damage to everyone else in their radius! This means that, in some cases, it can actually be preferable to take Trap damage as opposed to getting hit by an enemy Pokemon, since it won't actually knock you out until you're at 1 HP, but the enemies can still be knocked out by that 40 damage. You can step on an Explosion Trap while being chased by enemies, knock them all out in one fell swoop, and escape to fight another day, albeit still at low health. The downside to this is that all of your party members will take 40 damage, too, and they can also be knocked out and sent home because of it. But if you're doing a solo run or just don't care about the well-being of your friends, it's a legitimate strategy!

@@slevinchannel7589 Silks are behind the locked doors in postgame dungeons. Most of them are in the Zero Isle, but there's also four in Midnight Forest, Lake Afar, Mt. Mistral and Shimmer Hill. Dusts... are a complete fucking mistake. Sometimes a 5* or above mission awards a 1-star exclusive item of the client/outlaw species. If the target species doesn't have one, you instead get the Dust item. Have fun getting this twice for the Globe!

As a Pokemon myself (don’t ask) can confirm Leech Seed is horrifying. The roots will keep you stuck at ground level, much less how short they are, but if they end up coiling around your arms (it will) there’s nothing you can really do. If you’re in a team, maybe anguish in distress a little, but don’t sweat it, they’ll get you out. Alone? A few solid minutes of helpless struggling until you black out, hopefully someone finds you before you die, because those corpses are NASTY.

Seeing deep dives into mystery dungeon reminded me of a short clip I recorded of two enemies' sprites acting really weird in blue rescue team. I can't remember it now without digging out my old camcorder but what I can remember is that it flipped between two color palettes, one purple and one beige. I believe one of them was an arbok though I'm not sure about it

the PMD games (particularly the first two, imo) are lovely and you should consider looking into them. They have so many nice details like this, every time I've played I've always thought they were really high-effort games that the developers must have cared a lot for

Hmm... if there's a way to change who's being controlled mid dungeon, could you as the player throw an item at your (now) partner and achieve the effect? Another idea; using the unused switch box (via a custom wonder mail which would reward you with one) in the main story dungeons, playing as the partner and throwing a sticky item that way? If the protagonist faints you loose which is my thought behind this. I'm just putting ideas out there, thinking of possible scenarios. It's a very interesting subject!

no because whoever you control is the leader by default even if you switch who it is. the way to speed up the achievement in making all the pokemon a leader in the first game is to take each one into a dungeon in which you can switch leaders, make them all leaders and then switch out of the dungeon and repeat. the moment you take control away from a pokemon, you've transferred leadership, meaning that pokemon is now a partner and not a leader.

14:03 this code looks like it's just ensuring all wild Pokemon are cleared out of the dungeon data when loading a new one, done with a damage reason used nowhere else to ensure no problems pop up regarding using a reason that's intended for something else. the flag "never likely be[ing] true" seems wrong to me at a glance since the conditions in which it isn't are clearly laid out right above, but perhaps IsExperiencedLocked would always be true for some reason lol, i'm not familiar with this game's code. if the same damage reason is used in the team member loop below that, then perhaps it would be possible to trigger it in some fashion, legitimate or otherwise.

Bounce does not deal any recoil damage to the user.

there's no way for this to occur with bounce because it's essentially just an attack. if it doesn't hit something, it'll just miss with no damage another note is that splash's japanese name is 'hop', so that's probably why it was translated this way
