Nick. I agree. I prefer the Gen. 2 sprites more. Nothing against Gen. 3. But there's something disturbing with those animation sprite and they looked to flat & pixelated for trying to be an 16-bit game. They're way better GBA games that looked better than this.

Gen 2's animations have so much more life because the animation focuses on each Pokemon's unique features and personalities (eg. Ekans' rattle, Starmie's spinner, Ampharos' orbs, Teddiursa sucking its paw, etc.), rather than adjusting random parts of their bodies seen in Gen 3 and 4, and their 3D models to an extent. Also, someone else was joking about the blinking/eye movements, but they help so much in characterizing each individual sprite.

Also gen 3 relied way too heavily on sprite manipulation. You can tell there's only 2 sprites/frames for each pokemon compared to the much more detailed animations for Crystal.

beedrill's, pidgey's, arbok's, oddish's, vileplume's, parasect's, diglett's, machamp's, dewgong's, koffing's, weezing's, snorlax's, bellossom's, jumpluff's, teddiursa's, octillery's, mantine's, houndour's, porygon2's and celebi's are actually smooth. the rest, not much.

Best 2D sprites by far. There's a lot of personality in them! For the record, I'd say that the best 2.5D sprites go to Heart Gold and Soul Silver, and the best 3D sprites/models goes to either X and Y or Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Crystal was the one who introduced these and made them really good. Sucks in later gens they slacked off of just making it shake, thats not the point of animation to. Ngl, to good for a 2001 game, and with better material for future games they made them worse... but anyway the movement animation was only alive till gen 4 lol So... Crystal, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, and platinum. Sucks, only 5 games with these animations. Anyways, like i commented, crystal did the best out of them.
