I never owned Pokèmon Crystal during it's initial release since my mom cannot afford to buy it. 20 years after its initial release, I finally bought it on the 3DS e-shop last year and it made me feel like I was 2001 again. Kind of bittersweet; I wish I got to experience this during my youth but there are things you cannot have if you are lacking on funds.

Man I gotta say I got quite emotional at the end of the video when you mentioned 9/11 and pokemon going on a hiatus, since the original gens one and two came to an end around that time as well, thus marking the end of pokemania and all those fun "Mew under the truck" playground rumors (although gen 3 still had its fair share of interesting rumors, so not all hope is lost for people who like that stuff). Even though I doubt 9/11 had anything to do with the end of pokemania, and it'd still go out of style even if 9/11 never happened, it's still kind of sad, it's like the end of an era of sorts.

I remember doing the battle tower at level 70 and beating it for the first time. Just to get some calcium. By the time I had a team to beat it, my mons were maxed out on vitamins, such a waste. So I figured in my nativity that surely the level 100 rewards must be something special or better. I trained up my Snorlax Blissey and Shuckle to 100. Yes, I was that kid who went max stall in battle. Finally, having my triumphant battle in the level 100 matches. Just to get some proteins. That absolutely ruined my desire to do the battle tower anymore. The battle tower would have been the perfect spot to have the GS ball in the game. Or anything to give the player something good, at least.

I think a big part of Crystal's identity in Japan was the Mobile Adapter GB, a peripheral that let players connect their Game Boy Color devices to their mobile phones to do things like trade and battle with anyone in the country. Other features were also tied to the feature: the Battle Tower was completely different in Japan, being a network-exclusive feature, and you got an Egg Ticket from the Old Man that you had to redeem for the Odd Egg by connecting to the Mobile Station instead of just receiving the Odd Egg outright (meaning in Japanese games, it's not possible to get it without hacking). For 2000, I can see why it was so significant to Crystal's marketing in Japan. Though the feature was entirely localized, as leaks have shown us, the feature was removed entirely from international versions, likely because the age demographic of people who owned phones outside of Japan was much older at the time. With that in mind, it's really funny seeing the game's international marketing stretch itself to try and think of new features to advertise.

So, this is a sad video for me. I vaguely remember playing Crystal, but sometime afterward this was the last Pokemon thing I interacted with until Pokemon Go. In 2001 I was 10, not "too old" for this stuff by any means, but I got into sports heavily. I dreamed of playing baseball (spoiler didn't happen past college), and I went into sports year-round. You may say I could still have played Pokemon video games and the TCG in my spare time, but things just went differently. MTV, XGames, Madden, Halo, and other things consumed my small life. Similar to Paraspectre's great Madden 04 purge, I didn't sell my stuff to buy a game (because I didn't own a system), I just sold all my stuff because I thought I was 'too old" and wanted the money for what I have no idea. Like so many others it is a huge regret. I don't claim to have first edition blah blah, but I had versions of all the cards, even some German cards as I have two cousins who I met only once in my life when they came to America and we traded. Despite selling a Charizard, my biggest regret was losing my holographic Neo Discovery water type Kabutops. Kabutops was equally cool to me like Scyther for those sick scythe arms. What stood out for this Kabutops card was the different typing from the original cards, and the holographic pattern was stunning, the shiny bursts like the bubbles in the water, and Kabutops swimming at you, scythes geared up for an attack. Yeah, I can go buy one on TCG Player, but it's like selling your old cartridge and losing your og starter, some cards you had when you pulled them in this case were special. Welp, enough crying, I could surf to Cinnabar Island with all these tears. I'll watch some other Paraspective videos for games that seem interesting.

I just discovered you and I'm already loving that Paras and Parasect are your channell's mascots. Good choice, the Paras line is severely underrated and Paras is one of my favorite bug types (after Vespiquen, Beedrill, and Butterfree). Anyways, Pokemon Crystal is one of my favorite games in the Pokemon series but it would've been my absolutely fave gen 2 game if it weren't for the fact that you can't catch Mareep in it :(

Something worth noting with Crystal in my opinion is that some Pokemon were moved to be available earlier in the game. Like Sneasel is available in Ice Path in Crystal, but in Gold and Silver if you wanted a Sneasel before going to Kanto it was impossible if you didn't have a buddy willing to trade for one. A major criticism of Johto is that a lot of the new Pokemon were only available in Kanto for some reason, so it was nice to see Crystal try and remedy that for some of them.

According to Game Freak, Shigeru Miyamoto was the one who suggested the two version idea for Pokémon (instead of each copy being unique depending on your ID number. Too much data). He also suggested the multi version idea to Capcom for the Oracle games.

Crystal was, and still is my favorite of the Pokemon games. It brought me so much joy as a kid, and I maxed out the gameplay clock. The Odd Egg with its enhanced chance for shininess also gave me my first shiny, a Smoochum. I never knew it was shiny back then, I just thought it had cool sparkles when it emerged because I hatched it myself lol.

Yes that sucks since Mareep and its FINAL form was 1 of the best ones to USE in the Gold and Silver games and its DS remake of both. But Crystal also made Milktank/Whitney even HARDER to beat if you don't 1 hit kill it reason being it has a held item that cures Sleep/Paralysis AUTOMATICALLY so to completely make it harmless you had to cause those effects at least TWICE if you couldn't beat it in a single hit even with Cyndaquil or Totadile at the start of the game Chikorita however in Pokemon Crystal still SUCKS.

Its not that Chikorita resists rollout its just it SUCKS in General its weak against the FIRST 2 gyms and against ALL those BELL Sprouts in the Tower named after that pokemon it sucks as well. So I'll always chose Cynadiquil over Chikorita and I still find Fire types at the start better then Totadile/Water types.

The whole Neo era of GSC was incredible. Crystal was the best game in the Gen 1 and 2 series. It was the last generation that I actually paid attention to. Then the popularity fell off with me during RSE.

I didn’t get to play Crystal until the virtual console release, as the original release was when I was just a baby. Now that I’ve played it, I’m inclined to say it might be the definitive Johto experience for me, even with HGSS in consideration. Sure the remakes made massive quality of life improvements, but the main thing about Crystal that appeals to me is the encounter table overhaul they did to make many Pokémon easier and earlier to obtain, which HGSS sadly didn’t carry over (and arguably made worse with its limitations on Sinnoh cross-gen evolutions). Only goof was making Mareep unobtainable, but if it HAD to be a Johto mon I can’t think of any that could be cut in its place since even Sunflora adds a lot of flavor to the games that a Kanto mon couldn’t (I guess maybe Slugma since it’s post game exclusive in every iteration, but I have a soft spot for the little guy).

Thank you very much for this, one of my favourite new series and channel altogether! I played Silver & Crystal in Argentina, in a city where NOBODY had a gameboy :( I did the cloning trick to get the 3 starters on Silver, my pokedex had the most pokemon you can catch without trading but with cheating/cloning. I then played with a friend's cousin, obliterated him because I had all level 100 with rare candies. I asked to trade my Snorlax lv 100 for his MewTwo, but he didn't want to, until I told him that I would clone it and give it back! Such amazing times, I still have all my games plus the box for Crystal and Silver manual.

I had all 3 versions of this gen. Getting "bribed" for having good grades pays off :P I was a fan of collecting Unknown. I took the time to get the full alphabet. This was probably my favorite gen of all since the leap in features from Gen 1 to Gen 2 felt so significant at the time it just stuck with me... Also gen 2 had Umbreon: the best Eeveelution.

@@donutmonk Gen 3 was a big leap too. Not saying there weren't other huge leaps in the series. There definitely were, but this was the first time as a kid that I experienced a game's "sequel" that felt like a true sequel. Going from mono color to multi color, day/night cycle, days of the week, held items, adding new pokemon, the poke gear, legendries that move around, 2 regions to play in (which has not been done since gen 2), functionality with the Pikachu GS toy, battle tower, and so on. Gen 2 add a LOT.

@@Dublin.655 Ah, gotcha. I see what you mean. I unfortunately got to playing gen 2 way after all the hype passed so I wasnt there in its prime. I think what struck so well with gen 3 to me was that while gen 2 feels like a sequel, gen 3 felt like a whole different area in the same universe (higher res pixel art/sprites, the colors, pokemon designs felt different but felt like they still belonged, changes to box/bag/item management, movement with the bike/shoes, etc). Gen 2 feels like general and well thought out improvements as a sequel to gen 1, and gen 3 gave me that drive for exploration and wonder that gen 1 gave me because I really had no idea what new forms and ideas I could only get to see in Hoenn.

Gen 2 was my Gen 1 in terms of me being the perfect age to enjoy the game. I know Gen 2 isn't perfect, but to this day I think it is one of the best representatives of Old School GameFreak's passion for the series I.E exploring two regions instead of one and updating all of the sprites.

@@timelink3315 it has up to gen 5 pokemon in it I think, you can catch all the pokemon in the game, and the difficulty is comparatively easier than kaizo but much better than the original soul silver.

To be honest, if I have the urge to replay any Pokémon game, I’ll turn to Gen 1 or 2 more often than the others. The quicker simplicity can be more appealing. I recently started another playthrough of Sun and just kinda lost interest after getting through the intro stuff 😅

In the GSC games, the male option’s name was Gold. He was renamed Ethan when HGSS came out.

To be fair, they had MULTIPLE options.... and the option depended on the games. The games and the manuals that came with the games actually gave a different name per game version. Gold Version called him Gold, Silver called him Silver and in Crystal, he was called Kris along with the girl.

Really? Cuz I recently found my Silver version manual, and it still calls him Gold in it. In fact, I'm pretty sure the entire interior of the manual is just a straight copy-paste between the two versions. I don't know about Crystal's manual, though I do remember the in-game default name for the male character was Chris, not Kris like the female character.

What i loved about physical manuals the most aside of the information, was the art of the characters and that it gives you a small but well written description of the mechanics of the game and what else is there to explore without going too much into detail. That in my opinion, is what made the games back then so special in the sense that it gives you all of that for you to indulge yourself into it in case you were left with doubts.

But I remember it quite vividly, my brother and I came back from spending the Easter vacation with our extended family, and each of us found a GameBoy Camera on his desk. The next couple of weeks, we ran around our neighbourhood taking pictures, and "editing" them on the GameBoy. I'm not quite sure how the printer came in, maybe my parents had bought it along with the cameras, maybe my brother and I saved our allowance, dunno. The printer paper was essentially a long sticker, and to this day the door to my old room at my parents' house has stains from where we put our pieces of art. Maybe the printer is still in some box there too...

I owned gold and crystal and my couzin silver and crystal and have to say pokemon crystal is in my opinion the best entry in the series made the game si much more enjoyable with the animated sprites and. Adition of the story/lore and ofc the battle tower spend hundreds of hours in the game as a child and adult

Crystal is a good game, but definitely not the best in the series, definitely not the best Pokemon game. Obviously since it came so early in the games' history, it was the first for a lot of things. Problem is those things were very rough in the first iteration and some fundamental issues like the awful level scaling and terrible Pokemon placements with a mediocre post game made it very lacking compared to future releases.

Pokemon Crystal was one of the very first videogames I bought with my own money. I played the everloving crap out of that game and it holds a special place in my heart. I still have the original cartridge but like most GSC cartridges the battery has run dry so I can't save my game anymore. I would love to get it fixed but I do not know how. I know you can replace the battery but I am too afraid of accidentally breaking the cartridge to mess around with it. I think I only managed to get a shiny from the Odd Egg once and it was a shiny Tyrogue that would eventually evolve into a Hitmontop. I loved that you could catch Seel midway through the game, there was a Dewgong on my team every playthrough that tore Lance a new one. I tried several times to beat Champion Red but I never could. Back when I was a kid I figured trainers gave better experience so instead of battling against wild Pokemon in Mt. Silver I would ride the SS Vermillion back and forth multiple times every Wednesday and Saturday trying to grind experience as much as possible. It was kind of bittersweet when I found out that HGSS doesn't reset the trainers every ride. The soundtrack is burned into my mind and I still recall Buena's Password's theme song since I checked in to score enough points for Rare Candies.

I really enjoy hearing the memories of others with these games. A shiny Hitmontop is pretty cool too. And I know what you mean about changing the battery but it’s actually pretty simple. I did it with my Silver version no problem. You just need the right tool to open it

To impress a dweeb, helicopter leaf~ I never bothered with Yellow, but Crystal was my first "definitive version" of a Pokemon game and the only one I care about. And let's just say, I also appreciate the series' debut of female player characters too. Also cements Suicune as a top fave legendary of mine... especially its beta sprite. Fun fact. I think I got a Mew from a friend -- who I now as an adult wonder about its legitimacy -- to sweep the Elite 4. And inevitably grind to a halt in Kanto. Prior to beating a bugfix of Blue last year, that was the farthest I had ever gotten in a Pokemon game. Crystal was great.

If I could get original copies of heart gold or soul silver I could die happy. That remake made me fall so hard for pokemon all over again. I played crystal when it was released with a "brand new" Gameboy color. (My mom bassically stole it from someone) I've never stopped wanting obtain a copy. But they have gotten so expensive.

I actually managed to get a crystal in working order with a friends help. Found the thing in a dumpster run for a school project and ended up using it as the main subject. I got a B- due to poor grammar on my report. :p

I would say only get Crystal if you haven't got Gold or Silver version. I got Pokemon Red before Yellow was released on GameBoy so I learned a bit when it comes to Pokemon games, wait for a year or two to pass and see what is coming out from Japan before supporting any Next Gen Pokemon series. Crystal was my final traditional Pokemon game before I came back to the series with Sun and Moon, simply because I wanted to focus on other Japanese JRPGs in my gaming life and couldn't fit Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire in my crowded budget. But I did get Pokemon Colosseum on the Nintendo GameCube because I was a huge Stadium fan during the N64 days.

Continuing to really enjoy this series!! Here's something neat about Pokemon Crystal including a girl character - I was really excited for it specifically for the ability to play as a girl. I remember really hyping this up as being like a new thing and that there were like no video games where you could play as a girl (I have no idea if this was actually true at the time but it was true of the games I was playing) and people around me were just like "uh okay I guess." I continued playing as a girl for several more generations of Pokemon, arguing i did this because it was 'different' from what most games would let you do. and then later i realized i was trans and it was like 'oh actually mostly i just like being a girl in pokemon because i like being a girl in general." And I know other friends who also joke about Pokemon Crystal "making" them trans. So for me the introduction of player gender choice into Pokemon ultimately meant a lot for my identity development and finding myself! Even though I have more nostalgia for elements of Gold like its intro cutscene and box art, Crystal holds a really dear place in my heart as well.

Actually, it did effect the world. In fact, even Russia's recent attack on the Ukraine is effecting the world. My brats don't know it's effecting the world... but it is... and many people might not be feeling it... but it's effecting nations who have nothing to do with that war.... Just because you as a child didn't know about it or know of the effects doesn't mean it didn't effect you.... It's just that often times, you yourself might not feel the effect or know of it... but it's there.... Hell, the US is actually a center of power for the world and a lot of what it did effected businesses all over the world... We as individuals sometimes forget that we are only a small part of the world and can't always feel the ripples through out the planet...
