Bummer you didn't talk about the "secret" battle with Mewtwo that you could do once you have won every single stadium tournament. That was one of the coolest things that the game ever did. The 40 pokemon that made it in the game (Japanese Stadium 1) were the 40 pokemon used (collectively) by the finalists of the very first Japanese Pokemon tournaments. Even today, they're more or less the best pokemon in gen 1 competitively (other than Mew/Mewtwo, anyway). I think it was made as a platform to have real-life competitions on, but I don't have any source on that. Stadium 1 JP is a wild ride, though. The opponents, instead of having generic names like "Bug Boy", "Lad", etc., all have the real-life names of participants from said Japanese Pokemon tournament *and* the actual, real life teams that they used. It's a neat little piece of history. I love it to death, but fuck pokemon stadium. Playing this shit without a transfer pack is legitimately the hardest video game I have ever played in my entire life. I've been trying to beat this game for 20+ years of my life and I still can't win the last few Tournaments of Round 2 (looking at you, Pika Cup). That's right, you have to beat the game *twice* to actually win. If you're looking to go beyond the challenges you've been doing with Pokemon TCG for GBC, then give nightmare of a game a try lol. As "lacking" as it is to not have your preferred pokemon to use, trying to make any progress with the absolutely garbage pokemon this game gives you is a herculean task. For reference, the "speedrun" to "complete the game" (i.e. beat the four tournaments (Poke and Prime have to be beaten 4 different times on increasingly hard difficulties), beat the "Gym Leader Castle", beat the Final Boss, and then do it all a second time with way harder opponents) is 20 hours long, and only one person has ever bothered to do it. Lastly, the announcer is the only thing that makes this game bearable when things are going badly for you. When the AI starts cheating in the tournament modes by sending higher level pokemon than what you get with the rentals, the announcer starts making extremely campy, yet condescending remarks at your expense. It's got that 90s flair to it that's undeniably great.
@Paraspectre2 жыл бұрын
Those late game battles with rentals really are horrendous. It’s a good marketing ploy to get you to go buy the GB games yourself I guess haha
@superilikeeggsyo2 жыл бұрын
@@Paraspectre I don't know if you played beyond gym leader castle (which is all that was mentioned in the video), but Poke Cup Master Ball ("Level 50-55") and Pika Cup ("Level 15-20") deserve their own special places in hell. That 5 level gap between you and some of the enemy pokemon starts to get really nasty at the end, doubly so when the enemy pokemon actually start having decently competent move sets instead of just random junk you'd normally expect from the enemies in a pokemon game. Prime Cup Master Ball ("Level 100") isn't as bad as the other two, but the last guy in that one sends out a Mew (yes, the same Mew you can't actually obtain legitimately back in 2000 unless you lived in Japan or select cities) against you (on both the first and second play through of the game), no joke.

I have vague memories of playing Red on a Gameboy, not color, and I think I picked Charmander, and Machamp was on my team, but to be honest it's foggy. My single clearest memories of Pokemon games was Pokemon Stadium on the N64. Funny because I didn't own a N64 and these memories have to be from going over to friends houses to play. The biggest memory is from one night going to a friend Eric's dad's house (his parents were divored too, and he lived with his mom like I did with mine, so going to his dad's was crazy). We played Stadium literally all night, one of the few times I remember doing this as a kid. We drank Mt. Dew Code Red to keep us awake lol. I imagine now I'll find it to be tedious and repetitive but once they allow you to transfer on the switch I'll probably try to beat the cups and gyms again. I tried to do a gym run with rentals and while it's challenging it's only challenging because the sets are absolute garbage and nearly unplayable against ai with actual movesets. The reason Nintendo didn't do disc's during the N4l64 Era was to battle piracy, as with all of Nintendo's other Disc ventures, like with the GameCube and their mini-discs, and the Switch going back to game cards Game disc's were very well known for piracy, I had a friend who essentially downloaded his entire PS1 and PS2 library and even sold plenty of replicate games. That said, No surprise Nintendo didn't go with disc's but considering how people wanted the quality of their games but without wanting to pay, it's no wonder Nintendo constantly has a piracy problem, especially with things like the "PC PORTS" of Mario 64 and Ocarina being thrown around as legit ports by people.
