36 hours and 16 badges later, just caught Lugia, the 3 dawgz, and now Ho-oh. This video came in clutch. Thankfully I had a poliwrath that had hypnosis. May or may not have spent a few hours tryna catch Ho-oh, but did it in 5 minutes with this 5% method.

If you have a 5% chance of catching Ho-Oh at full health while asleep in one ultra ball, and you need to be at least 90% sure that you are going to catch it, you need at least 45 ultra balls. 19/20 the chance of not catching it for each ultra ball (19/20)^45=0.09944 or 9.944% chance of not catching it within 45 ultra balls Therefore 90.056% chance of catching it within 45 ultra balls Math and Pokemon are fun

According to the gen 2 catch rate calculator on dragonfly cave, most status effects like paralysis and poison do not, but sleep and freeze do. Good knowledge though I didn't know that about paralysis!

Wait so does the 5% catch rate while asleep with full health apply to like generation 3 games or is it a gen 2 thing only?

It's only a Gen 2 thing. I used Rayquaza to test out the mechanics for Gen 3. On full health chances of catching it not asleep are 0.83%, are 1.6% asleep on full health and 4.34% on 1HP asleep. So it's not something you can do in the later games, only Gen 2

I still kind of disagree at the full health vs 1% health, you might as well do damage to it to statistically improve your odds. SICK vid though

Putting damage wastes turns, though. Plus they'll just Recover it all away anyways.

Not really since the odds are 6.25% vs 5%. If this was a legendary that didn't have a move like Recover then sure, putting damage for that uptick in catch rate is useful. But Ho-Oh just recovers up all the health anyway so you're best off just putting it to sleep and working with the still almost as good 5% catch rate. Wasting your time with Recover until it may potentially get to struggle just isn't worth it, and worse than just putting it to sleep and being able to throw Ultra Balls
