As far as researchers not knowing about Pokemon eggs, in Red and Blue it was implied that pokemon hadn't existed for centuries, but just appeared one day recently (which was why Oak's pokedex started empty, etc.) So if Pokemon were brand new, then the fact that even Pokemon who appear to be mammals lay eggs would be quite a surprise! Ofc, the ruins of alph in GSC was the first step in ret-coning this idea of the Pokemon world, with RSE cementing Pokemon as having been around forever, but I think you can cut the guide writer some slack.

It's always so interesting seeing what kind of team you end up getting with these. I'd probably never use a Slowpoke in a playthrough for example (because I always pick Totodile, come at me), or even think about finishing the Elite Four with a Piloswine
@Hawlo2 жыл бұрын
Slowpoke is a bit weak, but if you can trade with someone then you can have a Slowking with Surf, Confusion, and Ice Punch as soon as you can Surf to get the King's Rock.
@yakitatefreak2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I agree with you on the Totodile pick. Slowpoke is good, but the coverage from Totodile is insanely useful as it can also learn a similar move set. Also, because of this, I ignored picking up the Pokémon in the Ice cave (Ice Punch in Goldenrod is something that can come in clutch). Also, many of the recommended Pokémon are not particularly amazing by any means. As a beginner, I'd recommend getting a female Geodude over using Onyx from the trade, as Attract is an annoying move to get around for Whitney. You can use Geodude for the first four gyms before you'd have a problem. Just make sure you know rock throw in the first gym battle.
@jonaw.21532 жыл бұрын
@@yakitatefreak Geodude is _amazing_ in the second gen. Goodbye Falkner and Bugsy, resist Miltank's Rollout, Morty hates that abilities aren't a thing yet, Chuck can be dangerous if he switches to Poliwrath but is easily walled, Jasmine is more easy pickings, Pryce's half-water Mon don't actually know any water moves IIRC, Claire is the only "difficult" one (and that is only if you didn't pick Totodile which is now a Feraligatr with Ice Punch and okay-ish special attack). As for the Elite Four, Will might be annoying, but Koga and Bruno are pushovers. Watch out for Karen's Vileplume. Lance is just more of Claire.

@@jonaw.2153 Agreed. Nidorina and Nidoqueen have been canonically sterile since Gen 1, before breeding was even introduced as a game mechanic. I don’t think there’s ever been an explanation as to why. Their Pokedex entries even contradict this, describing them feeding and protecting their young. Nidoran F is the only one of its line that can breed, yet all stages of the Nidoran M line can breed. It’s baffling.

Given the "choose-your-order" approach of the Chuck-Jasmine-Pryce gym leaders, I'm curious to see what is the Nintended way. As per usual, I'm looking forward to seeing the team you build during this guided adventure. 2:23 - The bizarreness of Spinarak's move-set on display here as well as the misfortune of the hard-to-find Yanma learning Wing Attack as it's strongest STAB attack (really should have been a Dragon-Bug anyway). 3:54 - A handy one-stop segment for Pokémon locations would have been so helpful back in the day. Heck, it's even helpful nowadays. Kid me would not wasted my time trying to find a Slugma and Sneasel or would have known where exactly I could find a Dunsparce. 6:49 - Not a fan of the "roast" against my favourite type, but to be fair, Bugsy is using a Lv14 Metapod and a Kakuna. He kind of deserves the roast. 9:30 - Johto's bug catching contest... featuring exclusively Kanto Pokémon. Typical of Gen 2 really. Cool to see you participate. 11:48 - To be fair, the Pokémon themselves are also a bit clueless. Magnemite only discovered around this time that it was immune to Poison and for a while, Pokémon thought you Crunched down on Pokémon with special energy rather than physically biting them. The introduction of a lot of new mechanics don't make a lot of sense how folks didn't know about them beforehand. 16:44 - They really like showing off the Mareep line in this Crystal version guide, don' they?

I think the reason why pokemon breeding was 'just being discovered' in gen 2, was because gen 1 and 2 were partly written with the idea they take place in a slightly alternate version of the real world wherein pokemon had been absent until somewhat recently; hence all the real world references throughout gen 1, or that early gen 1 guide/pokedex that only recently got translated thanks to DYKG. Heck, the region of Kanto is based directly on the japanese region of Kanto, and the beta version of Gen 2 was based on all of japan, with many of the early town/city names being taken directly from real areas of japan

I remember just how magical gen2 felt when it released as a 10yr old. My mom has ordered me an analogue pocket for Christmas, so I’ll be hunting for a mint copy of crystal with a fresh battery install for when my system gets delivered. Edit: Yes I’m 33 years old, and my mom still shops for me for Christmas. Life should always be lived as closely to childhood as possible ❤

It's worth pointing out that the odd egg has a 25% chance of being shiny

Pryce has the biggest type blunder out of the whole thing, IMO. Fire types are neutral v Dewgong, while it limely has Water attacks...which hurt fire types. Despite the weakness to Ice, Grass would've been the better type to recommend, as it's super effective against the whole team. Though Fighting would be better against 2 of them (can't remember 100% if Seel is pure Water or if it has Ice as well). Oh well

Ah, my good old rival, ???. That's what I named him as a kid 🤷 probably didn't help that I didnt speak English at the time. Also, both times i played through Crystal as a kid, the Togepi egg hatched at almost exactly the same place. I must've walked super similarly both times, but I just thought it always hatched in the same place :D

Playing Gen 2 as a kid I also named the rival “???” due to the fact that’s what the game told me his name was. I always wonder if others did this too.

Looks like the guide thought you should choose Cyndaquil since it was in a lot of the gym battle previews on their info page

The X Defend from Sprout Tower in Gold and Silver becoming an X Accuracy in Crystal is actually massive for Falkner because it completely nullifies the accuracy drops from Mud-Slap

Recently played through crystal and beat Red with a level 49 Donphan and a bunch of X-items. Excited to see how I was suppose to do it

Even though Pidgey's gust is now a flying type instead of a normal type move, it doesn't receive it until 9 unlike Spearow which has access to peck from the start. Also, you can pick up a Geodude on the same route where Spearow is.

For anyone reading these comments, unrelated to the video but since he mentioned the stones would just like to say there is a very easy way to get access to the elemental stones. Delete all the numbers in your phone except for the trainer you want the stone from. Go back to your house tell your mom to change daylight savings time. Do this back and forth it will trigger calls from the trainer. Do this a few times/beat the trainer a few times and you'll have your stone! Takes about 5-10 mins depending on rng and yoill have to go back to new bark after each victory to trigger another call. Really uesful for team building in a more timely manner

pokemon crystal actually have 4 different guides: nintendo power, prima games, Versus games, and bradygames. would be interesting if you play through them all but i doubt you will spend the money to get them all
