Can I beat Pokémon FireRed with only Bug Type Pokémon using Hardcore Nuzlocke Rules?
Normal Nuzlocke Ruleset:
1. Fainting = Death
2. Can only catch the first Bug Type Pokémon on each route.
3. Nickname Pokémon
Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
4. No items in battle (held items okay)
5. No leveling past the next gym leader/E4 (at the START of the battle)
6. Play on "Set" battle mode

Despite how much I love gen 3, you get to admit they weren't very well balanced - many pokemons were simply unusable because of bad movesets and there were so many annoying mechanics. I loved Moon but i will never restart it, just something about triggering a cutscene at every new route just isn't fun when the routes feel so short. Personally i did enjoy doing a bug run in Heartgold, not a nuzlock though, i just a type restriction to try and use some cool pokemon like Yanmega and Forretress. I also can't help but feel that he could break shuckle with the right generation's moveset. I remember seeing a move to average your attack stats with your target and considering the weird base stat spread that could be broken, or even just trick room and then swap your attacking and defensive stats for the ultimate glass cannon.

I love how you always manage to bring some light and create strategies for underappreciated pokémon. I also feel like it´d be fun if you could do that for some seemingly useless moves, like maybe having a run where your only direct attacking move is Last Resort or Metronome, or one where you have to use moves classified as "usually useless" by Smogon
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do the metronome one just because it can roll selfdestruct (or is it explosion) which is possibly the worst move for a nuzlock outside of very specific circumstances and you know it would roll it against a wild pokemon. My experience is that metronome sounds cool until it rolls 3 growls in a row and then selfdestruct where it immediately gets replaced at next levelup. But any other move restriction that still gives him control over what actually happens would be interesting.
@lockfour495
@lockfour495 2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonreed7522 Yeah I´d have to agree with you there. I imagine it´d be fun enough to watch, but it sounds absolutely infuriating, and doesn´t really have that much strategy besides the pokémon and items you use and the other non-damaging moves you run. (Though to be fair his last nuzlocke was one where his pokémon died randomly, but this one would probably still be worse)

Fun fact from a teacher. The education system at least where I've lived and taught doesn't put you against each other or compare you at all. Think about it. Was there ever a single time where anyone in your school said anything even remotely similar to "if you do better/worse than your peers..." The students are the ones who compare each other. The only time we ever compare grades is to the generally accepted grade level standards in order to see if you're performing above or below expectations of a student in your grade.

Some might call it an unhealthy obsession with striving for perfection fueled by two decades of going through an academic system that pits individuals against one another leading to deep seeded insecurities about their own comparative self worth no mather what level of success they achieve. ...but I call it determination. Thats exactly how I feel!

Fun fact onix used tackle cause it was ONLY using rock tomb as a speed control move...so once Butterfree was slower it doesn't equate rocktomb as a super effective move or best move to use it sees it has a speed advantage and considered it time to attack

Honestly, you probably should’ve used Swords Dance on the healing turns, especially since you could at least guarantee a lot of damage on Arcanine before inevitably going down since you wouldn’t be in ExtremeSpeed range. Alternatively, another thing you could’ve done was switch to Venomoth on the Rock Tomb since your Speed wouldn’t be lowered, and you could guarantee the Giga Drain KO. This would leave Parasect alive to Spore the Alakazam.

@@FlygonHG I just put it into a calculator, and even with a Defense IV of 0 at your level, Rock Tomb wouldn’t KO outside of a crit. *Lvl 59 0 Atk Rhydon Rock Tomb vs. Lvl 61 0 HP / 0 Def Venomoth: 147-174 (84 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO*

@@FlygonHG Finally, I want to compare the odds of each scenario playing out. *Switching to Parasect after the sleep turn.* 1/4 chance of Rhydon waking up on that turn 4/5 chance of landing Rock Tomb 15/16 chance of no crit 4/5 chance of landing Rock Tomb again after outspeeding. 1/4 * 15/16 * 4/5 * 4/5 = 240/1600 = 3/20 = 15% There’s also the extra 1.25% chance of Rock Tomb critting, bringing the odds up to just above 16%. *Switching to Venomoth after the sleep turn* 1/4 chance of Rhydon waking up. 4/5 chance of hitting Rock Tomb (won’t lower Speed because of Shield Dust) 1/16 chance of crit 1/4 * 4/5 * 1/16 = 4/320 = 1/80 = 1.25%

@UCeevOkOum6Oj44lVZQdzaCg Okay, I did make one mistake with the first calc (and, by extension, the probability following, as it assumed Rock Tomb not KOing outside of a crit). I assumed a perfect HP IV, and any IV lower would leave you open to a KO, so you may have been right all along.

Bug memes and jokes aside, I'm seriously really glad that you stuck it to the end and finished this run legitimately from start to finish. I really love watching your Nuzlockes, and it's really exciting whenever you release a new piece of content on here, as seeing these games played in a different way brings a really fun and brand new experience. Bug typing is one of my favorites, so it's really heartwarming to see it get some love even when it was so limited in the earlier generations.

Hey Matti, loved watching the run! As for the switch to Arcanine as opposed to Rhydon, I believe this has to do with Gen 3 switch mechanics, which I learned from Pokémon Emerald Kaizo (which, side note, I think you should definitely look into playing at some point!). The AI will prioritize sending out a Pokémon on various conditions. The first is it sends a Pokémon out that has a super effective move, which is the more obvious condition. The second, which is the harder condition, is that it takes into account the typing of the Pokémon and "scores" a modifier. Arcanine's Fire typing is super effective against Bug (2) and neutral to Poison (1), so it essentially has a modifier of 2 (2x1). Rhydon, on the other hand, has to account both of its types against Beedrill's two types. For Rock, it's super effective against Bug (2) and netural against Poison (1), so again a modifier of 2. For Ground, it's not very effective against Bug (1/2), but super effective against Poison (2), so they essentially cancel out and yield a modifier of 1, resulting in a total modifier of 2 as well. Since these modifiers are the same, what the AI likely did was just decide on one of them randomly.

To me it feels Gen 5 was the generation where bugs started becoming interesting to use, so if thinking about doing another bug-type only hardcore nuzlocke, Black 2/White 2 would be quite the treat, you can even choose to play the challenge mode available in these games if you want a harder time, trainers will have bigger teams, more held items, better movepools and higher levels.
