PL:A really is a microcosm of the entire games industry, where games just chase trends to appeal to shareholders to milk a property for its maximum profit with little regard to its quality or artistic value outside of being a game. We will never see something like Final Fantasy 6 ever again: a classic JRPG with ambitious design and writing, and something to really say with its story. People who say that games were always made for profit, are only partially correct. The difference is that the sales pitch for games used to be "It'll sell well because it's good," and now, the sales pitch is "The game will sell well because it has addictive gameplay loops that abuse human psychology into thinking people are having fun due to precise dopamine triggers we'll insert at every opportunity." It feels like the triple A dream is mostly dead at this point, and people who play such games are largely useful idiots for shareholders who continue to profit from their ignorance, to the tune of billions of dollars yearly. It makes you not want to play games at all anymore, sometimes. Great video. Thanks for adding something meaningful to the discussion that wasn't just done for clicks.

As a guy who's been rocking with Pokémon since the mid-90s, I have to say I really did enjoy PLA. I thought it was nice to move away from the very cute and cuddly vibe that Pokemon has been rocking with post-generation 2, and really showcase why Pokemon themselves are monsters to be feared. The idea of catching a mall really harkens back to the original slogan, but instead of just catching whatever Pokemon you want, you're actually creating the first known Pokedex. Unfortunately, a lot of the story is lost if you're not familiar with Japanese history which is a big shame for those in the West. Sinnoh is based on Hokkaido which used to be called Enzo before it was repeatedly colonized by the Japanese. That's essentially what the Galaxy team is doing and even the DP Clans are descended from Outsiders who originally invaded Hisui (hence they're obliviousness about the other two members of The Creation Quartet). The original inhabitants of the region where celestials (The Ainu stand-ins) which basically had their culture robbed and were essentially turned into strangers in their own land. That's basically why Volo is lashing out. I can definitely see why this game wouldn't appeal to everybody, especially if they prefer the the more seasoned formula of old, but I've kind of grown tired of it after having it served to me for over two decades TBH. It reminds me so much of Digimon World from the PlayStation which in itself is an outlier among other video games in that series. Godspeed though brother, and even if I don't necessarily agree with most of your points, I do think this is a very well made video

Man, I am super excited to find someone who is willing to speak openly and honestly about a lot of stuff you touch on in this video. From touching on how hollow Sword and Shields attempts at creating an open world were to coming out and saying the BDSP art style looks bad (yes, I've had people legitimately defend it) a lot of what you're saying resonates with me on a level I can't really get to with most people in regards to this series. Pokemon was a whole world unto itself growing up and it feels like it gets more and more hollow every time I replay anything past gen 5. Thanks for this video, and I'm gonna rewatch it again now.

Totally agree, the DS Pokemon games are definitely my favorite, I still regret selling my dsi and hg/ss, dpp, and black and white. PLA got really boring really fast for me, I was trying to speedrun the second half of the game I just wanted to get it over with, I still haven't completed the pokedex to get to Arceus, I probably haven't touched the game since I finished the first part of the main story back when the game came out.

My dream game isn't open world MMO Pokémon, it's Pokémon with a darker story. Kinda like pokemon insurgence, but not super cringey edge lord like. Idk, fighting evil cult people worshipping the legendary pokemon is pretty cool sounding to me.

The requirements for some moves is stupid, 40 times using Agile style for Psyshield Bash, just for Stantler to evolve, ugh Although we should give GF a tad slack since this was their first time trying this, maybe they'll make a better one Guess I've gotten so used to "terrible graphics" that I can't tell. Though some could say the same with BOTW's graphics BDSP's elite four and champion have comp level pokemon

Nah, I blame the fan base. We’re already at a point where Gamefreak is shitting this games out, putting no effort into them whatsoever and they’re still selling like hotcakes. I’ve had more fun recently playing Pokémon rom hacks of old games than I would playing these modern garbage games Gamefreak makes. They just look bad in every detail possible. Legends Arceus, new or not, open world, or not, still doesn’t make it a good game, much less a good Pokémon game. If anything it’s a boring game, with no objectives, nothing to do, besides catch Pokémon.
@torterrapin47192 жыл бұрын
I understand there are issues with PLA but this review seems a little excessive, the series had never done anything like this and this wasn't bad, it has alot to do that was very different from the main line games such as fighting Arceus and the other giant pokemon, the open world having shinies and alphas was unique. Could it have been better, of course, but the game was not terrible by a long shot.

You're video has me fearful of how they'll butcher my beloved Unova. Gen 5 BW1 was what grabbed me back into the franchise post Emerald (never played much Gen 4) all new region, no returning pokemon. A reimagining of Gen 1, was really good. Then BW2 came out and improved it even more. The music, sprites, returning pokedex was pure fire, the story, World Tournament, the story even. Thank you for the insight and commentary. Keep up the hustle my man.
@saintkevro2 жыл бұрын
I don't get why people have such a boner for Gen 5. I will give you that it is peak pixel based/isometric 2D on the DS. But "rebooting" the series by locking you into Gen 1 levels of variety with the new 150 pokemon, who mostly suck in design, btw, absolutely killed those games. They didn't sell well because they weren't fun, and people stopped playing them. And yet there are so many people who jack off to the thought of them. Pokémon has been in a downward spiral since HGSS. Each generation it feels like they almost made the leap they need to, but fail utterly. And I've come to the conclusion that Gamefreak just lack talent. They cannot make 3D games and 3D worlds. Their story telling and writing abilities are bad. Add to the fact that Pokemon has become an annual entry like COD or Madden, and there is no hope for this franchize getting out of the toilet anytime soon. Not as long as every turd they plop out sells 16 million copies.
@N.N01 Жыл бұрын
What leap does Gamefreak need to make but fail at? I don't get how HGSS is when Pokemon went downhill.
