The in-game lore of Scarlet & Violet stated that the crater was formed around a million years prior to the events of the games by a meteor impact. Unless we were being lied to by the academy, which is possible since they cover up the existence of Paradox Pokémon and that the player character goes into the crater with 3 fellow students, I'm not entirely convinced that the Ultimate Weapon is the cause of the crater. I'd be more inclined to be believe that the Ultimate Weapon was made of the Tera Crystals from the crater.

I don't think it was stated to be from a meteor though, but yes, the game does tells us it's much more ancient. Now, also with the timeline of the paldean empire, being so recent wouldn't make much sense.

I always found it interesting that the great crater looks like something exploded outward from underground to make it, and not something crashing into it. Especially sincethe crater goes down so deep into the Earth.

It’s a funny idea to think that Gamefreak would care enough about Kalos to add in lore from it to Pokémon. Although, Kalos is based on France, and Paldea is somewhat based on Spain, and the two countries border each other. They did even have at least one war against each other, being the Franco-Spanish War

Also the theory is wrong for many reasons the main one being the game tells you the actual origin of the crater is a meteorite fallen 1 million years ago while AZ tells you he fired the weapon 3000 years ago, so the crater already existed even before the weapon was created and AZ born so yeah not really

My pokemon theory is that jynx originally didn't have a head. The black face was a blank void and the dress is the pokémon. The chest is actually eyes and the face is held up psychically to lure in prey. The human-like speech is a human victim being devoured under the dress

I think it could be that paldea is the kalos variant without Megas created by the ultimate machine which explains the kalosian Pokémon and why the crater wasn’t covered in history class, because paldea was created *after* the machine fired, they would have no idea what happened

So I could be wrong but in the classes it tells you the crater is insanely old, if you look into legendary lore they claim a lot of dragon legendaries come from space and you find terapagos at the very bottom of the crater so I think terapagos is the cause.

The Indigo Disk DLC for Scarlet & Violet confirmed the Great Crater of Paldea was created by Terapagos after it crashed into the region and cacconed itself in a giant tomb of Terra Crystals that spread all around creating the entire valley withing the Crater

There are also English Pokémon names that make WAY more sense than their Japanese equivalents (plus they do the localization in-house since gen 4 to prevent leaks and release worldwide simultaneously). The localization team know what's up. A.Z is also a reference to Azoth, the essential agent of transformation in classical alchemy, which is incredibly relevant to pokemon's lore as a great many of the major legendary pokemon, especially those of gen 6, 7 and 8 reference specific concepts from classic alchemy. Unsurprisingly, Area Zero also contains multiple alchemical references and concepts. The art from the scarlet and violet books depicting the disc pokemon (which we now know to be terrapagos) especially has multiple pieces of alchemical symbology in it.

I like the idea of the war between Kalos and Paldea because both regions are based, respectively, on France and the Iberian Peninsula, which is mostly Spain. Both of those countries have an extensive history of wars and rivalry, so it would make sense that they had a conflict in Pokémon too
