Mallow is definitely underappreciated (at least for me). Whenever people talk about Sun & Moon girls, they always bring out Lillie(it's not a bad thing, thou). Mallow meeting her mother is one of the few moments that made me want to tear up, some of the other few moments being Socks' death in 10 Promises to My Dog and Stage 6 onwards in Stray Cat Doors 2.

THANK YOU! Like personally as a (almost) 30 year old man, I've kinda drifted apart from the anime nowadays, however the one episode that honestly intrigued me to watch was the Mallow X Mom episode. It was so deep and emotional, and I think this is the very first time Pokemon touched the death of a main character's close relative (let alone their mother who as we all know is MANY People's weakness). To me, while I have seen my fair share of Pokemon sad moments (Ash turned to stone, SO MANY T.R, Ash and Friends' pokemon releases I've lost count, Celebi almost dying, etc.etc.) I think this episode is by far THE SADDEST episode in the entire Pokemon series ever!!!!!

I broke down when watching this ep for the first time. It hit too close to home for me I lost my mom before saying sorry after an argument, which was a shock because she wasn't sick (she had a lot of health problems, but wasn't sick or anything) I was the one who found her and it's been with me ever since I love this episode even though it hurts. The S&M anime had lots of dealings with death and they handled the topic very well for a kid's anime

@killdozer77923 жыл бұрын
I think the worst part about all this is that, despite Mallow's outburst, I'm sure her mother knew she didn't mean what she said, at least if we take her reaction to seeing her daughter again into consideration. I think she understood that she was just upset, it was heat-of-the-moment, and wouldn't have held it against her. Yet Mallow wouldn't have known this - she surely would have calmed down and realised that what she said was wrong and may have been ready to apologise only to be told her mother had gone...for all she knew, genuinely upset with her. Poor Mallow spent years upset over the fact her mother may have died believing that her own daughter genuinely hated her, and ultimately she knew she didn't.
@daniele79893 жыл бұрын
No, but the thing would be that she would have known the Mallow only said it because of the pain her illness was putting her through and she would have died herself wracked with guilt knowing that her last moments were only causing suffering for those around her.
@KanohiVahi2 жыл бұрын
@@daniele7989 Yeah and that comes back to the reason why her mom was probably apologizing for a thing that was out of her control so much that it made Mallow uncomfortable and made her blurt out those words. It's just a super tough and tragic situation and you can't really blame anyone for their reactions especially considering how young Mallow was. In the end it's just a situation no one is really prepared for. No less a child. The real tragedy here is that real life doesn't allow us closure like this after someone has passed away. But I'm glad Mallow got hers after all that time.

This episode really hit me hard. Even if i still have my parents, this episode still made me cry so much because it actually reminded me about my mom and her dad. My grandfather passed away back in 2009, his death was so painful to her. Few days before his passing, she called him on my phone and lets him know that she wants to see him one last time before he passes since he has fallen extremely ill. So we got our bags ready and headed out to the airport to go to Mexico. But when we got there, it was already too late... my grandfather passed away hours before we made it to the airport. My mom screamed with so much pain as her sister and her mom were hugging her. This was a very depressing experience for me, especially for my mom. She felt so much guilt for not making it on time and didn't got the chance to say one last goodbye to my grandfather. She has gotten so depressed that she didn't wanted to live anymore, but my grandmother talked with her and told her that she shouldn't give up her life because of what happened, that the one thing my grandfather would've wanted was for her to live life to the fullest, to live every day to the fullest with the people she has. My mom has been getting a lot of support from my relatives during our stay in mexico, even i didn't wanted to stay away from my mom, i was always there for her and letting her know that my grandfather's death wasn't her fault. She felt so grateful with how much our relatives were comforting her as much as they could. We then had to leave mexico and came back to the U.S, and my mom did managed to move on. And ever since then, my mom has always been making her annual day of the dead alter where she always puts my grandfather's photo. I even told her one of best things i have learned from my favorite cartoon El Tigre The Adventures Of Manny Rivera. "As long as we remember our late loved ones, their spirits will always remain alive, but when we can no longer remember them, only then they are truly gone."

Mallow was always like the best character in SuMo's anime. Every single Mallow-centric episode was great. Her, Lily, and Litten always had the best story arcs in SuMo. The episode discussed in the video, in particular fucking tore me up... Which is something I didn't expect a Pokemon to do even once, let alone twice. Like I said... Litten had some fantastic episodes and its initial one with Stoutland had me tearing up as well. Here's the thing. Both episodes deal with loss and while Mallow's dealt with regret for things said and not said, Litten's episode dealt with handling loss that you can't prevent. Both concepts hit a little close to home for me. A few years ago, my grandfather on my Step-fathers side of the family passed away. He was a life long smoker so we all knew it was coming but that doesn't take away from the pain of watching someone who you grew up around slip into a state where he couldn't even function without the assistance of a tube down his throat. You gotta understand that, on my step-dads side of the family, grandpa was like the family nanny. Everyone leaves the kids with grandpa because he was dope, and let us get away with shit that grandma wouldn't. Then I grew up. And he never changed. Still the same dope grandpa who loved ALL of his grandkids even if he tried to pretend he was a grump (He wasn't). I was in Job Corps, two states away when my mom called me and told me that doctors had given him about three days left before he passed away. It was Friday and I rushed back to campus to submit my bereavement leave to the appropriate staff. Unfortunately, staff likes to leave early on Fridays because it's Friday and it's not like they have a job to do or anything. Sunday came. My mom called me and told me he passed away over night. The amount of frustration I felt and still feel to this day eats at me. I never got to say goodbye. I never got to convey just how much I appreciate him to his face. Guilt is a fitting word to describe what I feel. So episodes with themes like that, even in shows as simple in nature as Pokemon never fail to get a reaction out of me. I'm an emotional individual as it is. I don't like to show it in person but when I'm at home, I get hype, angry, and sad at shows and games all the time. But when you introduce a theme that I can make a connection with like that, I can't hold back feelings like that.

Theory: What if Mallow thinks that she's somehow responsible for her mother's death, fearing that her last words caused her mom to succumb to her illness? Sure, her parents knew that their daughter said it in an outburst, and probably didn't mean what she said, but Mallow's guilt made her believe that telling her dying mother that she hated her dashed any hopes of recovering. And, it's clear that Mallow's father knew that it was too late for his wife to recover anyways, so he came to stay by her side and make sure that she dies happily.

I realized something... if there's a highly lethal disease that can kill young adults, it has to be cancer. My theory is that Mallow's mother had a brain tumour, and according to statistics, they are one of the leading deaths of people between the age of 19-35. At the time Mallow's mother died she would have fallen firmly in that age bracket. One of the most common brain tumours is glioblastoma and it's highly lethal. The median time between diagnosis and death is 14-16 months. How do it relates to Mallow and her mother? When she caught Bounsweet for Mallow, she was possibly told that she had exhausted all options for her glioblastoma tumour and that she would be referred to hospice care. And that scene where Mallow made her mistake? Yes, I believe it was not a hospital but a local hospice room. Thank you for reading.

I feel like I took my mom’s boyfriend for granted and I definitely want to apologize and show gratitude to him. Mallow is very relatable and while I didn’t say anything mean to mom’s boyfriend, I still feel like I need to apologize for some things.
